  • 2001 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (4/11/2010)

Light lemon cream custard laced with loads of minerality. Very lively lemon powder, chalk and clean approach. Some grassiness and having a puligny baygon creaminess. Elegant and focused wine. Finish was a tad short and how I wished it was longer. Excellent poise maintained throughout.

Flight 2 - A flight of Montrachets (3 Notes)

What a flight! Paired with a huge steamed garoup. Perfect!

  • 2002 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    (4/11/2010)

Muted nose showing its youth and unready to drink for an excellent vintage. Got some wispy white dirt smoke , flowers and hay. Very light lemon peers through. Quite and shy though. Probably like one eye opened in the morning. Very tight . Oak shows with mineral backbone and a dry slate finish.

  • 2006 Remoissenet Père et Fils Bâtard-Montrachet 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    (4/11/2010)

Big nose. Bubble gummy, soap suds and banana essence. A bit awkward at the moment but with time, it evened out and the elegance of sparkling lemon grapefruits came to the fore. Very dry pithy finish. Has depth of flavours and still volatile and evolving.

Wow! Extremely aromatic and pungent to the heavens! Huge nose exhibiting confident character. Creamy-wise , I get english breakfast milk tes biscotti...v royal . Fruit wise, I get teasings of orange zest and and freshly grinded rinds. Burgundian assy mushroomyness races from the background to take centerstage on the senses. Chalky minerality balances out with nice white fruits. . Very mouthwatering citrus fruits ending with soda water bitterness .

Flight 3 - RSV v RSV (2 Notes)

My first encounter with RSV has been magical...

  • 2001 Domaine Follin-Arbelet Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    (4/11/2010)

This didnt blow me away at first but really grew stronger and more assertive by the minute . By the end of 10 mins, I fell in love...with burgundy again..:) Though showing its youthfulness, it was already approachable and I suspect due to it being an 01 vintage. So far, I have had many good memories of 01 burgs. This just tops the list of why I love 2001 burgundies at the moment. Herbal tea, a big fresh bunch of flowers, cherries that became increasingly seductive towards the back nose. Extremely layered with violets, bramble and ethereally sweet summer fruits. Precise and defined, power and elegance. Iron fist in a velvet glove. Eveything a burgundy at its best would be. There is firm silent strength on the palate. Although still very much tight, the tightly compressed layers of fruit is extremely pristine, fresh and flowerised! Ahhh.. i was making orgasmic sighs going through this wine. She is well built, slightly muscular but still all woman...an atheletic one.

  • 2000 Nicolas Potel Romanée St. Vivant 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    (4/11/2010)

Showing much more age than the 01 Follin RSV even though only 1 year apart . This , at first, was more forthcoming and appealing with burgundian funkyness, earth, spiced sandalwood and mushrooms. Old world and rustic. Definitely opened for business on the palate as well. Pretty lightish on the palate with nice unobtrusive clean stewed fruits. Pretty florals and small light red berries glacing the palate. Drinking well now and would do so for the next few years. A pity the finish couldnt have been longer to enjoy.

Flight 4 - Burdungy Wannabees (2 Notes)

One a non pinot but really mimicking burgundy in all other aspects , the other a pinot made by a burgundian but still showing new world fruit.

  • 1984 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (4/11/2010)

Stewed pot of dirt, cherries, horse, leather and fowl feathers. This is funky and rustic and backward. With its age, it could easily fool as a burg especially with that touch of roses too. But the sweeter spectrum of its fruits does give away its grenache makeup. Dirt and garrigue atop aged cherries. Drinking now . Dry dusty finish.

  • 2004 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Laurène 86 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Big pure pinot fruits. Extremely vibrant and eager with polished (need my shades) black fruits and touches of strawberries.Sweet and pretty fruits. Nice purity . Still young, this should develop quite nicely .

Flight 5 - Italian Burg v French Burg (2 Notes)

Barolo...italy's answer to burgundy...paired with a young but exceptionally well made NSG.

  • 1980 Prunotto Barolo Riserva 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (4/11/2010)

Lifted nose of macerated roses, old gun powder and some poop. Good earth and dirt with tar notes. Firm drying tannins with some old orange peels and old leather. Almost converging to an aged burg characteristic.

  • 2002 Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Champs Perdrix 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (4/11/2010)

If wine does represents the character of its maker, this winemaker should be a very affallable middle aged couple. Very flowery and perfumey. Young but very composed and balanced with steady nifty pace from start to finish. Ready for drinking. The flowers are just amazingly fresh . A very pretty and likable wine. I just cant believe it is an NSG as this shouts volnay or chambolle or at least a flowery vosne! Fruits are pure with quality of the vintage definitely showing.

Flight 6 - Classic Aged Clarets (2 Notes)

10 years apart and very classic, paired with the braised ox tail.. this was magical.

  • 1975 Château Calon-Ségur 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    (4/11/2010)

Aged leather, spices and licourice. Really quite aged and just a leg tired . Very dry raisined out fruit . Still has one good leg to keep it upright but needs to be drunk now . Textbook aged claret characteristics.

  • 1985 Château Mouton Rothschild 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (4/11/2010)

Drinking this blinded side by side with the 75 calon, this one caught my attention immediately. The nose was beautifully claret...nicely tanned leather, tobacco, spices, pencil shavings and a streak of smoky bacon.Fresh forward looking wine with graphite laced masculine fruits. Excellent presentation . Prim and proper, nobility of its bloodline shows and had me thinking 1st growth at the start. A lovely example of a mouton. Even with the strong lineup of wines tasted before this, this is really a good finisher! It brings its own thunder and exerts its presence and stood proud and shining brightly. Just starting to drink, I suspect this will easily last though another decade or so.

  • 1979 Banara Muscat Swan Valley 86 Points

Australia, Western Australia, Greater Perth, Swan Valley

    (4/11/2010)

Bronzy light brown. Sharp rich nose of enlgish toffees boosted by brandy and rum. Not for the faint hearted. Quite old school type aussie dessert wine. Caramelised banana with port reduction and sugarised vanilla. Mid length .

  • 1986 Château Guiraud 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    (4/12/2010)

Half unctuous , half opulent and half as rich as one was expecting but still a good sauternes, drinking well now. Not richly fat like a fatuous despot that cant even get out of his throne. This is more like a well to do merchant , living comfortable with enough riches to maintain a wide enough girth. Half ripened apricots, half raisined sultanas. Some ice cream soda and spiced sweet tea.
