  • 2006 Lail Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Georgia Gamble Ranch 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

Absolutely fantastic. Agreed, best SB that I've experienced. Completely unique in style. An eccentric beast that may actually be worth the price tag.
Medium golden apple juice color. Looked like it had some age on it, though it was only an '06! Golden raisins, honey, vibrant vanilla with a nice fatty oiliness.
The palate is a beautiful elegant weight while still showing excellent acid structure. Some sweet peaches, white flowers and soft white pepper flavors dance on the tongue.
A real nice focused core of fruit with some hints of butter - though still a refreshing bottling ala Cali SB. Some sea breeze on the back end. Very little minerality though it has the rest of the kitchen sink.
Yummy and I would dare to say this bottling is in a league of its own. Highly recommended.

  • 1999 Château Petit Village 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Served a bit cold. Nice aromatics. Some fatty bacon, dried herbs. A rustic raspberry with pure clean cigar and tobacco aromas.
Some faint mintiness on the palate though it falls short as a whole. Some unique blue fruit - blueberry pie.

  • 2006 Jemrose Gloria's Gem 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley

Heady medium spice coupled with a bit of enjoyable heat.
Some nice cardmom, dark cherries, plush plummy cassis - very pretty stylistically.
Chocolatey and beautifully structured with a cool smokiness on the back end.
A little bacon fat and smoked beef jerkey play as well.
The palate is feminine and displays a great mouth feel.
A little roast coffee and fresh vanilla bean flavors are noticebale as well.
Excellent wine from an underrated producer.

  • 2002 Joseph Phelps Insignia 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Fantastic profound wine. Clearly everyones Wine of the Day.
Dark lush cherries, mocha, and an unctious plush weight to the nose. Some spice, vanilla, and volcanic rock - coal.
Elegant structure with a dominating finish lasting 60+ seconds. More flavors - leather, tobacco, a unique dark strawberry crumble play.
Well integrated tannins - just awesome. Rose petals as well. Big and chewy. Culty but not too over the top or heady - this is all about exquisite balance. Rusty, dusty and awe-inspiring. Bravo. Love where this bottling is going. Will try again in 3-5 years. A lot of life ahead.

Some spice. Rustic. A little heat. Well done overall. Not a standout performance for the day.

  • 1997 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Light and rusty. A little anise, and dusty prunes.
Tarry - Old World in style. A little oxidation - enjoyable.
Some white truffle and artichoke play on the back end of the nose and palate as well.
    Real nice.

  • 2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very very young. Didn't have time to open up to its full potential.
Funky, mossy, shroomy with some excellent dark red berry support. Really nice elegance showing a masculine side - screams Hermitage.
Extravagant with a nice savory quakity - soy sauce, balsamic. Smoked meat - dark and floral. Showing nice spice.
Lots of potential. Opulent and royal. Great acid.

  • 2005 Colgin Syrah IX Estate 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A sinful elixir. Cloudy purple ruby red color. Super funkadelic on the nose.
Shroomy, menthol, anise. Very big. Some super chocolate, malty vanilla action as well. Spicy dark all spice, jerky and really smokey - absolutely New World Syrah in style.
Rich and well endowed. Masculine, earthy. Some unique Indian curry spice on the back end.
Stunning but not a surprise at this price point and from this remarkable producer. One of my favorite New World Syrahs hands down.
