Given the controversy surrounding Perse and his Pavie, I was very curious to try these. The Perse wines were not quite what I was expecting - they weren't hot or over-ripe, but they were brutally tannic and it was the level of extraction that I couldn't cope with - the 2001 was the one I'd had before and stood out well above the other post-97 wines. The 80s wines were decent enough without being very exciting. The two real oldsters were fading but very attractive.
2006 Château Pavie Decesse 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Big and spicy, dense and grippy, a savoury edge, finishes very dry

2005 Château Pavie 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Muted compared with the 06, but has that dry edge again, high spice, very high tannin - closed today

2004 Château Pavie 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Spicy, direct, smoky, rich and tannic - but on this one the tannic bite was welcome - most present didn't like this, but I was much keener on it

2003 Château Pavie 89 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Browning, elusive nose, fresh, smooth and milky, but then unpleasantly grippy - not at all what I'd expected - not hot or porty at all, just amazingly extracted and tannic

2001 Château Pavie 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Muted nose, some spice, meaty blackberry fruit, grippy, but not excessively so - much the best so far

1999 Château Pavie 86 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Lighter bodied, but milky, sickly and not much of a finish - it grew a bit smokier in the glass, but I really dislike the milky tone

1998 Château Pavie 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Not much on the nose, resolved, fresh, smooth, not fully expressive, but decent enough - enough fat to buffer the tannin

1990 Château Pavie 88 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Berried aroma, rich, exotic, smooth and smoky, but somehow uninvolving

1989 Château Pavie 89 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Less on the nose than the 90, but rich, exotic (again) and substantial and altogether rather better, though still not very exciting

1986 Château Pavie 88 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Decently rich, the tannin absorbed, chocolatey, quite nice - another one where I liked it more than others present

1985 Château Pavie 89 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Served blind after the 82, this was smooth, with some maltiness, fading but enjoyable - correctly guessed as an 85

This still had a core of ripe fruit giving it life, rather lovely

A bit of wax polich V/A on the nose, some iodine, still vigorous, liked it
