STG does Beaucastel

Introduction

Thanks to Jason and Tracy for hosting such a nice event.. Highlighted not by the wines alone, but also by Jason’s excellent Beef Borgogne, mashed potatoes (did in my diet resolutions) and delicious green beans.
I asked him if he hired out as a home-chef for dinner parties :)

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1983 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 87 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Yum, Great Nose (initially) ...pepper, Asian spice, smoke bacon..dark fruit ..plum...some honey..
    not much on the palate. nothing to match the nose..

    after about 20-30 minutes...sadly, the nose disappeared

  • 1991 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    A similar nose to the 1983.. bacon...barnyard..saddle leather...the mid palate is a little dilute and dies off on the finish..
    but the nose stayed...I think this wine doe not have much age left in it.

  • 1978 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Initialy quite tight both on the nose and mouth..after about 15 minutes..it opened..balck cherry..pepper.. some smoked bacon..
    quite extracted on the palate.. short somewhat bitter finish..but....this wine is 18 yerars old..and still has quite a bit of age left

    great nose..horse sweat (I love it!)...licorice... espresso..sweet black cherry..on the palate still quite closed..with quite a tannic finsih..

    ? will the fruit outlast the tannin..I’m not sure..

    Nose...yum..saddle sweat ...barnyard..black cherry.. plum..pepper.. I love the way the friuit integrates with the barnyard..
    graet chewy mouth feel..nice tannins and friut..black olives..green peppers.. long finish and years to go

  • 1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    initially quite tight..opened to a heady mixture of dark peppery fruit and olives..green pepper..pickle..I do not get the chalk..or stone that others do.
    the palate is complex..friut as above..with a black olive/olive oil/Herbs de Provence overlay..nice integration of fruit and tannin..years to go and will continue to integrate and becomne even more smooth and lovely 94 now.. a few years down the road... 95-96-97 points

    tight... hot... quite a lot of barnyard... later it opens to some fruit ..plum... black raspberry a nice palate... saddle leather on the somewhat short finish rather dilute compared to other Beaus we have tasted

    Wow..what a nose..combines sweet damask roses..Violets..flower garden..along with barnyard... saddle leather... Cedar…
    wonderful mouth feel.. dense... black olives.. dark tobacco (Latakia) ..long finish great mixture of fruit and tannin.

    Many years left. 95 now 96-98 later

    deep, dark, complex wine, black fruit, licorice, again black Latakia like the ’95 Hommage, massive chewy extracted palate..some Tamari,
    sweet fruit.. great tannins.. long, long finish ... years and years left

    light pale brick color. and then the nose ! OMFG ( a borrowed LeVine-ism) such a mixture of barnyard and fruit.. horse.. saddle leather.... cedar..sweet stewed prunes..black pepper..again Latakia and Damask roses and then the palate: such smooth tannin integrated with the fruit... very giving.. it seems quite lite, not in a dilute way, but in a delicate, complex way with a long, long beautiful, smooth, finish clearly my WOTN
    :) !! Yippee !! 7 more in my cellar :)

Closing

To finsih this event: along with the stickies described so eloquently in the notes above, a selection of great brownies and cookies for dessert, and again ,yet again, my perpetual diet resolutions do NOT thank you, Tracy :)
