  • 2004 Schild Estate Shiraz 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Color was dark purple, i thought a little lighter on the edges, but most didn't agree. The nose is more old world with earth, leather, hints of tobacco, coffee predominating. Very little fruit was showing through. The palate was medium bodied with good tannins and a medium finsih. I don't see how this wine could be referred to as a fruit bomb in any way. If so, there is major bottle variation.

  • 2003 Heath Wines Shiraz Reserve 100 Year Old Vine 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Dark color, very slight bricking. Nose was smokey with leather, earth. Fruit profile was lacking in the nose. The palate was medium bodied and the fruit never really showed up. More of an old world style, but not quite as strong in the mid palate. 90-91pts.

  • 2002 Chateau Ste. Michelle Syrah 90 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Bonus wine #1, served blind. This wine was definitely a surprise for everyone. The group thought Auusie, but no no, Washington state it is. Dark purple color, no bricking at all at 8 years on a base bottling. The nose was dynamic with earth, pepper, spices , black fruit and bit of oak present. The palate follows through on the nose, a bit lighter in body than some of the other big wines, but not much. The finish is medium. I was not sure how this would show, and I must say that the group really thought it stood well with the entire group of much more expensive wines. This will be worth a look in the future. Don't know if it drank this nice when it was young or not, but it sure did tonight. Solid 90+pts.

  • 2003 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel 92 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Bonus wine #2. This was not blind. Dark color. Nose has dark fruits with earth, good spice, oak, and leather, with a scortched earth essence. The medium - full bodied palate has some sharper tannins and show some oak as well. Good finish. This wine was very good. 92+pts.
