Introduction

Another night for the history books. We were celebrating Ron's new job. Matt came over with some redonkulous bottles. And Ron threw together some pretty outstanding mushroom risotto and grille flank steak. A little smoke from my kitchen ended up in the hallway prompting a visit from DC's finest. Woops. Makes for a great story though.

Wow! The color of this is like that bright yellow of dehydrated pee. You can tell just by looking at that this is going to be huge. At first, the oak was just too much for me in this wine, but after a couple of hours it felt more integrated. The nose alone on this wine is worth the price of admission. Honey perfume is the best description I can come up with. On the palate, it's huge. Almost sweet to me. The quality of the fruit is quite astounding. And the finish is everlasting. Still I'd rather smell it than drink it. Not totally my cup of tea, but you can help but appreciate it.

Fabulous Barolo. Wonderful floral aroma, leather, and indian spices. Full bodied, with cranberry and cherry flavors that deepened, darkened and fanned out on the palate as the night wore on. Long finish. Tremendous structure. Excellent with the meal.

Really interesting wine. Very reticent on the nose at first. Really took a while to get going in that department. Major pencil lead. The palate was a total different story though. Exuberant and youthful. This wine was bouncing all over my mouth with spicy acidity and fresh red fruit flavors. Long finish turns towards....blueberry? I dunno, but it was one hell of a cap on a great evening.

Closing

The Alban could have been desert. Seriously though, everyone was entoxicated by the smell of this wine. The Barolo performed the best with the food. High tannin, high acid just cut right through the flavors, bringing you back for more. The two older Bordeaux were real treats. Classic wine. Great food. Good company. And fire trucks. Makes for a fun evening.
