Introduction

Another super event with a few new members joining us. A fun 3 wines blind to start along with comparing 2 US Cabernets and finally comparing vintages of the Old Bastard. Again NO Corked bottles.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2004 L'Aventure Optimus 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Nice showing and little heat as the last bottle had. Dark purple with blackberries, floral, coffee, cinnamon, and oak. Medium tannins and medium finish. Nice coffee bean character on the finish. Solid wine.

  • 2004 Rotllan Torra Priorat Tirant 92 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Another nice showing for this wine. Decanted 4 hours prior to serving and featured spice, floral, leather and chocolate on the nose. The palate was expressive with floral, leather, raspberries, and chocolate. Medium finish and this should age another decade.

  • 2005 Tim Smith Wines Shiraz Barossa 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Blackberries, floral, raspberries, and oak on the nose. The wine is balanced and really flavorful. No flaws and concentrated finish.

  • 2003 Owen Roe Cabernet Sauvignon DuBrul Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

Nice wine and groups wine of the night. Cherry, spice, forest floor and raspberries. Good acidity and still holding up well. Medium finish and the right balance of fruit and earth elements.

  • 2006 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A big wine that needs some years in the cellar. I decanted this 4 hours and could have used some more time. Spice, cassis, oak, vanilla and floral notes on the nose and palate. Thick wine and the finish shows some nice minerality. Medium finish.

  • 2003 Kaesler Shiraz Old Bastard 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

A nice wine but showing very little fruit at this stage. Black in color with spice, coffee, oak and floral notes. The palate is gritty with coffee beans, floral, oak, vanilla and spice. Medium to long finish.

  • 2004 Kaesler Shiraz Old Bastard 95 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Better than the 2003 and shows way more fruit. Dark in color and a nose of bacon, pepper, smoke, blackberries and cherry. Rich and concentrated and picks up some minerals on the long finish. A wonderful wine and have sampled it twice now with consistent notes.

  • 2002 Glaetzer Shiraz 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Really nice bonus wine from Kevin. Very balanced and pure. Blackberries, plum, coffee, spice and floral. Concentrated and medium to long finish. Second best wine of the night as I liked it better than the Old Bastard 03 and 06 Mondavi Reserve.
