Black currants, smoke, a little oak; well hung meat, giving little in the mouth, tannic finish, tight and focused, fresh acid, a tad short.

Black currants, bonfire, a little oak – and indeed a little refinement; moderate+ length, moderate tannins, good dryness. Fresh, food friendly, but lacks depth and complexity. Marginally disappointing.

Mellow berry fruit, complex and welcoming smell; spices, fairly heavy and with good tannins. A tiny hint of cork may have obscured any refinement. 90+

Dark with almost some blue notes; some oak, a certain sweetness – almost candy-like, flat taste curve, a bit disjointed and hollow, watery.

Powerful dark and complex smell; smoke, coffee beans, some complexity here – still has an upside. Lovely wine!

Sweet and deep dark berry fruit, that still has something civilized; good intensity throughout the taste curve until the middle, then it tails off a bit too quickly. Later in the evening it grew and the curve became more complete. Fresh and intense.

Dark fruit, some sweetness and spices; a tad short for its class, good intensity, fairly tannic. Some iron and earth after a while. Still a bit closed?

Dark, wonderful fruit, some smoke mixed with sweetness; dark fruit, soft and forthcoming, still a lot of tannins under the fruit, fresh. A very up-front wine that showed more of itself than any of the young first-growths this evening.

Coffee, blackcurrants, pencil shaves, smoke; coffee in the mouth, wonderful balance, underlying complexity, intense. Great! However, I did find that its development in the glass was nopt too positive, perhaps it did actually fade bit.

Coffee and earth, some smoke and dark berries; more berry fruit in the mouth, but also some dirt, i.e. some not entirely clean, fairly good acid, a lot of tannin. The finish is wanting a bit, though.

Most subdued, anonymous smell. Concluded that it must have been closed and did let it rest in the glass for some hours. Becomes a bit more open after a while with some tobacco and graphite. Very difficult to tell its future. 90-95

Coffe, elegance, and graphite; good intensity, elegant, wonderful structure – but very, very young.

Volatile acidity, some marzipan; a bit thin, sweetish, but lacking acidity for my taste, some spices.

Flowers and spices, fresh; fairly good intensity and freshness, on the moderate side of sweetness, light on its feet, good balance. Lacking power and intensity.

Overall the 04's showed better than the 01's. Several of the 1er crus were actually too young to be meaningfully assessed, at least by me.

2004 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 89 Points

Medium dark for its age; pronounced berry smell, some wood, young and zappy; fresh, moderately long, a lot of oak, heavy tannins at the end, a bit green.

2001 Domaine de Chevalier 88 Points
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Dark for its age; black-currants, refined nose; moderate body, not much complexity, drying finish, a bit ascetic. May perhaps become a bit more refined, but I expect that it will always be on the lean side.

Deep dark fruit, some wood and exotic spices; a little hollow start on the taste curve, a lot of tannin, dark fruit, almost some plums. I am uncertain whether this will become complex. 90+
