Introduction

The Saturdays at One group got together this week on Sunday to do a tasting of some Napa and Sonoma wines. Here are the results:

  • 2008 Hirsch Vineyards Chardonnay 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of pineapple, lychee, yellow pear and wet stones. Flavors of lemon, yellow pears and sweet apples. Medium acidity, medium body. Drink over the short term. 90.

  • 2007 Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir Ulises Valdez Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Tasted non blind. Opened for one hour but not decanted. Nose of graham crackers, raspberries, talc, berries and potpourri. Flavors of black cherries, black berries, and a hint of bitters on the finish. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Hold into the medium term and then drink. 91.

    Tasted non blind. Opened and Vinturi decanted 90 minutes before serving. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of potpourri, black cherries, black berries, dark plums and a hint of talc. Flavors of rich dark berries, chocolate covered cherries, currants, plums and bitters on the medium to long finish. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Hold into the short to medium term before opening. 90.

    Tasted non blind. Opened and decanted two hours before double decanting for transport to the tasting and then opened in bottle for two more hours. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of thatch, vanilla, white pepper, currants and black cherries. Flavors of currants, plums, black cherries and black berries. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with an extended decant or continue to hold. 93+.

Tight nose of plums, hits of roasted meat, flowers, white pepper and maybe some dark currants. Flavors of currants, cherries, berries and bitters. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with plenty of air or continue to hold. 88?
