France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Missing the magic from last time, seems to be a little closed down? The nose is fairly open, with dark fruit. Smooth attack. Slightly simple this time, though, and very much so for the price. Some oak showing. Medium tannins and body, medium+ acid. $111
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Ripe, almost raisiny nose, perfumed. Dark fruit with grape jelly. Medium+ structure, wow for the vintage. Slightly bitter oak, though. No brett this time. Very solid overall. $100
It may have just been the effect of having this after two soft 2007 Chateauneufs, but the awesome structure on this one made me sit up and take notice. Licorice nose. Drinks almost like a Bordeaux, light on its feet, balanced oak, elegant, good minerality. Not worth $77, but solid.
Meh. It's another overripe, understructured Napa Cab. White out on the ripe nose, almost medicinal. Very new world. Decent but not great acid and tannin. Not rich, but a sweet finish. Good, but grossly overpriced at $90
