14th Annual Lyon 10 Year Retro Tasting

Eugene, Oregon
Tasted Sunday, November 7, 2010 by Grinner with 883 views

Introduction

These wines were decanted off their sediment at least 3 hrs before the tasting, then put back in bottle about 10 minutes later, and bagged to serve in double blinded flights of 5-6 wines. There were four ringers that were easy to pick out. While folks were gathering we poured the '00 Arygle Extended Tirage (93) and the '00 Knudsen's Vineyard Julia's Blanc de blanc (92), both excellent with the former winning out by a whisker; just a little more complex. My notes are sparse because of how fast I had to go to pour all these wines (and eat a little!) in 4 hrs.

Flight 1 - Flight One (5 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Siran 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

All the Margaux wines did great in this blind tasting. Excellent depth and length. Notable graphite and wet stone component made me think "Graves". 93 on day 2.

  • 2000 Château Grand-Pontet 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Enough cigar box/sweet tobacco to make me think Pauillac when tasted blind. Then you pick up some mocha and plum leaning you back to merlot as the dominant grape. 90 on day 2.

  • 2000 Quinta do Fojo Douro Fojo 91 Points

Some picked up a trace of VA, which blew off. It does remind one of what a dry Port might taste like. Very dense and long. Easy to pick out as a ringer in this tasting especially having tried it a few mos earlier. 89 on day 2.

  • 2000 Château Montrose 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Cork was fine but most thought there must be something wrong with this bottle, but we couldn't put our finger on it. A little muted and maybe a touch of VA. What black fruit was there did last nicely. Not unpleasant but not at all like my last one. 85 on day 2 w/ no off notes again.

  • 2000 Edi Simcic Duet 89 Points

    Slovenia, Primorska, Goriška Brda

I'm not 100% sure this is the exact "Edi Simcic" red that was brought to this tasting, but supposedly it was Bordeaux varietals grown in Slovenia. The wine had a sweetness to the nose and was a bit over-ripe and jammy. Pretty interesting tho' and reasonably deep. Dried out over night: 85pts on day 2.
