Introduction

Hosted by Calvert Woodley, this was my first look at 2009 Burgundy. We also had the opportunity to taste more incredible Cru Beaujolais from Henry Fessy. My overall impressions were that the reds are really impressive as a whole and will be beautiful pinots. Chardonnay was harder for me to judge. Many were unbalanced with the oak - so while my initial reaction wasn't overly positive I am interested to see how the oak integrates within the wines over the upcoming years.

Flight 1 - Louis Latour 2009 Burgundy Blanc Flight (6 Notes)

I didn't post notes on a couple wines here - these are the ones that stuck out to me.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Puligny-Montrachet 77 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Thought the oak just blew this wine away. No balance, clunky on the palate. Not my style.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Meursault 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Enjoyed this very much. Drinking well right now with good minerals, sea salt, and lemons. Not as good as the Chassagne, but far better than the Puligny.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Chassagne-Montrachet 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Enjoyed this wine. Nose was fresh and perfumed with white flowers, some honey and stonefruit. Really enjoyed it.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tropical fruits on the nose with honeyed pears, and spicy minerals. Such a young wine, so the oak and alcohol were a bit volatile in my opinion, but the flavors were pure so I'm thinking time will be necessary for this wine to come together.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Bâtard-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Powerful nose already of almonds, minerals, honeysuckle, marshmellows and white flowers. Didn't think this showed too well tonight with the oak really running the show. Underneath some of the makeup, there's serious depth and structure to this wine, but it's really hidden beneath some of these tertiary flavors. Definitely a wine to hold onto for a while.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Powerful nose of marshmellows, oak, lemon oil, almond paste and minerals. Much like the Batard, this has a lot of potential but is backwards right now. Hold, hold, hold.

Flight 2 - Simonnet-Febvre Flight (7 Notes)

A new producer to me. Was really excited about their Saint-Bris and Les Clos. Both are worthy wines that should be considered for purchase.

Flight 3 - Henry Fessy Beaujolais Flight (5 Notes)

Another impressive flight of 2009 Beaujolais. Beautifully delicate and complex wines.

Flight 4 - Louis Latour 2009 Burgundy Rouge Flight (8 Notes)

Both Bob and I were really impressed by Latour's pinot. Mssr. Latour compared 2009 to 2005, but both Bob and I agreed that at the same point in their evolution the 2009 are far more open for business. Each wine I had was beautiful and I'd be happy to own any of them.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Beaune 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune

Open for business! Good notes of violets, red florals, and berries. Good acidity, but incredibly, this is not closed down.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Pommard 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

Nice nose of dusty berries, red cherries and spices. Showed well.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Vosne-Romanée 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Good nose of that classic, "vosne spice", with delicate red berries, and great acidity. Showed really well.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

This is probably my favorite part of Pommard, and this wine didn't disappoint. Nose was surprisingly open with great red fruit, spices, minerals and sage. Palate is tight, but has great depth and there's impressive potential lying behind the tannic wall. Red fruit comes through nicely with really great acidity on the finish. Impressive.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Volnay 1er Cru En Chevret 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Slightly less perfumed nose compared to the les epenots - but this does show nice red florals, red berries and minerals. Tight on the palate, but the structure is impressive.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Corton-Clos du Roi 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Great nose of red berries, roasted herbs, spices, and red florals. Seriously young on the palate, but this had some really interesting tertiary notes of sage, and dried leaves that were really nice. Will be a beauty in 10 years.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Serious wine with impressive structure and depth. Nose had savory herbs, red berries, and crushed rocks. Plenty of years before this shakes off its training wheels, but an impressive young corton that should develop gracefully.

  • 2009 Louis Latour Chambertin Cuvée Héritiers Latour 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Probably my wine of the night. Really beautiful nose of florals, red fruits, spices, and earthy tones. Palate is quite firm with red berries, minerals and underbrush peaking through a massive tannic wall. Great structure and depth here with impressive acidity on the finish. Will be a beauty with time.
