SLO Tasting Group - Secret Santa 2010 Tasting

Tasted Friday, December 17, 2010 by bretrooks with 286 views

Introduction

This was the second annual Secret Santa get-together for our tasting group. Everyone brought a dish and two bottles of whatever wine they chose for their assigned recipient - one wrapped as a gift, and one unwrapped for tasting. By the end of the evening, everyone was full and happy.

The tasting order for our evening jumps around a little bit, due in part to food pairings and in part to unfamiliarity with most of the wines being poured.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2006 Alois Kracher Cuvée Beerenauslese

    Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee

Young and fairly intense. Sweet white florals on the nose, and sweetness balanced against biting zesty acidity on the palate. Mandarin oranges, pears in syrup, and lemonade. Fairly simple right now, but may improve with age.

  • 2007 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Rheingau

Compared with the other spatleses I've had recently, this was one of the driest and most mineral. Sweet grapefruit and tart melon on the palate. Young.

  • 2007 Rocca di Frassinello Maremma Toscana Poggio alla Guardia

    Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana

Decanted ~45 minutes. Seemed a bit closed, but others didn't mind. Not inky in appearance, but dark inky flavors on the palate, along with cherry skins and subtle minerality. Struck me as fairly elegant for a young Tuscan wine. Good, but needs time to blossom.

  • 2001 Hunt Cellars Rhapsody in Red Reserve

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Not decanted, opened ~1 hour before consuming. Bordeaux blend. A spicy wine all around - allspice, nutmeg, and cloves on the nose, with italian herbs and dried cherries/plums on the palate. Extended spicy finish. I haven't had many wines like it, and I'm glad my secret santa picked up the 2003 version of this for me...

  • 2005 Château D'Aiguilhe

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

Decanted ~90 minutes. Very nice and well-balanced, but seems to be just entering its drinking window. Inky and dense, with blackberry and plum fruit hidden behind notes of leather and tar (or black tea). Tongue-coating tannins show up at the end. Good stuff, but this really needs a few more years.

  • 2004 Tolo Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

I brought this, from the recent late 2010 bottling. Decanted ~2 hours total, consumed over 1 hour. A bit harsh/fumy at pour time, but with time in the glass this did come together nicely. Black cherries, cassis, oaky spice, and dusty tannins. Would benefit from a year or two in bottle.

  • 2008 Ridge Geyserville

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Aerated in bottle ~1 1/2 hours. Wonderful balance between acids and fruit, with mild tannins. Black cherries, cranberries, a touch of milk chocolate, and a subtle savory quality. Delicious to drink or hold.

  • 2005 Schloss Schönborn Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Auslese

    Germany, Rheingau

From 375. Interesting butterscotch/pie crust notes on nose and finish, with tart apricots, lemonade, and creamy notes on palate. Nice overall.

  • 2006 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos

    Hungary, Tokaji

My first Tokaji, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some honeyed botrytis notes, reminiscent of young Sauternes I've tried, but the sweetness is well balanced by zip from lean fruit notes - tart apples, apricots, orange peel, lime zest. Nice finish.

  • 2006 EOS Zinfandel Port

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

This wine was hard to evaluate. Very young, with some heat and maybe some VA to boot. Still, it had good intensity of raspberry liqueur character, some kirschy and cassisy notes, and enough acid to age on. I'd give it time to settle and/or lots and lots of air.

  • NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto 10 Year Old Tawny

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Last wine of the evening, so I wasn't paying close attention. Walnuts and a hint of molasses or caramel. Not over-sweet. Lighter than expected in color and palate weight. Good overall.
