Scott Paul for early 2000 Burgs, Eyrie, and Vista Hills

Introduction

The impetus for this trip was Scott Paul's tasting of some early 2000 Burgundies in Carlton, which sounded really interested. Dan and I were both entertaining the idea of going, and then Ken decided to join the day of. While we were out there we decided to make a couple more stops along the way.

Flight 1 - Scott Paul (8 Notes)

Some good wines and then just some average wines today. The Chavy Puligny-Montrachet was quite enjoyable, and I really loved the 2003 Clos des Chenes from Pascal Bouley. I wish they had more than one bottle left by the time I got to it, though!

  • 2004 Philippe Chavy Puligny-Montrachet Rue Rousseau 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Slight oak char on the nose, plenty of bright white fruit, with rocks and stone. The palate is really voluptuous... really awesome texture. Quite delicious, with a little but of popcorn flavors. The palate is really quite riveting. The finish begins with some pleasing acid, quite soft, and some butter and cream. Really killer on the palate every time I go back, but the nose and finish aren't quite as good. I still love to drink this.

  • 2002 Francois Gay Savigny-lès-Beaune 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Kind of raisiny on the nose; plenty of other dried old fruits. Some oak, a fire, and forest wood. The initial attack on the palate is of some bright fruit, but it gets a little funky as it remains on the palate. Kind of tastes like a damp cellar. The finish comes with good spice, some strange corkiness, and is drying. Pleasing, but nothing too interesting.

  • 2004 Domaine René Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Cloudy in the glass. Aromas of burning tires with sulfur poured on top. Definitely smells like a piccolo pete firework going off here. On a really big sniff, there is some slight fruit aromas barely present. It also smells like reptile shit (some said frog shit, some said snake shit)... I also heard people talk about tide pools, oysters... just all kinds of odd smells. The palate is surprisingly bright after that odd nose, but there is some light fireworks here too. Pretty intense wine. The finish is strange and makes my brain shake. Pond water. Really funky, and almost rank. I actually really enjoyed the experience of this wine, hence the score, but it definitely was not what I'd call tasty.

  • 2004 Domaine Huber-Verdereau Volnay Les Robardelles 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Very light nose... only light floral notes. Some bright red fruits are hidden as well. The palate is nice and mild, some tart fruit, and is very drying. The finish is funky, and really really dry. Definitely a young one, but really enjoyable to drink, despite its lack of complexity.

  • 2003 Réyane et Pascal Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Really, really pretty nose... lots of diverse floral character. Just really elegant and deep, rich and complex. Awesome. Incredibly sexy texture on the palate... rich and complex; deep. It's very tight on the palate, but the texture and complexity are visible. Rich and full on the finish, though still tight. Really fantastic depth here. Only one bottle left when I got to it. This drinks well today, one of the best 2003s I've had.

  • 2006 Domaine Francois Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Really strange nose; bright, but with some heavy sulphates going on. Much more open and appealing on the palate. Good fruit, and not much tannins. Bright, delicious finish. Really full and large red fruit throughout the finish, which lingered for some time. Not much in the way of complexity, but really voluptuous finish. 90+

  • 2004 Scott Paul Cellars Pinot Noir Audrey 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Rich, deep nose. Nice. The palate shows some good depth and is tasty, though quite mellow and soft. This is drinking really well today; quite mellow, soft, though not too much complexity. I wouldn't hesitate to pop them now.

  • 2000 Scott Paul Cellars Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard 81 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Maybe I shouldn't be allowed to note wines like these. Someone probably likes this style, it's just not me. This smells like California Pinot Noir (and I didn't even realize it actually was). It's almost like a fruit reduction with alcohol; like a port on the nose. Very fruit forward on the palate. This doesn't show its age at all, really. That's the best thing I could say about it, though. It's nearly hot on the finish, and just way too fruity and extracted for my tastes.

Flight 2 - Eyrie (6 Notes)

I never have actually been to their tasting room in McMinville. A fine spot, but it's just a tasting room in a city, which is a bit of a drag. The Estate Pinot Noir was the best here, and a pretty good value these days.

  • 2007 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Blanc 84 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

A little spritzy on the nose. Rich and full on the palate. This has gone through malolactic, leaving it a little too round for my tastes. There's building spice on the finish with some caramel apple. Nice acidity, though. Overall, too round for me.

  • 2008 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris Dundee Hills 85 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

I think he said this was barrel aged for 9-10 months. The aromas are fairly nice and rich; lots of thick fruit. There's something that tastes oaky (though this sees no oak), surely from the malolactic fermentation. Rich, big and creamy.

  • 2008 The Eyrie Vineyards Chardonnay Original Vines 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Really pleasing nose; rich, creamy, and lightly buttery, but in a graceful way. Creamy and luscious on the palate, with really nice balance of its fruit flavors, some butter components, and acid. Pretty graceful. Awesome acid starts into the finish, which is really pleasing and good. One of the better Oregon Chardonnays I've had.

  • 2008 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Black Cap 88 Points

    USA, Oregon

Pretty funky on the nose, with some strange moldy notes. The palate is fine, showing spice, lots of tannins building, and some big fruit. The finish expresses some more spice, mild fruit, and big tannins. Doesn't feel wholly balanced.

  • 2008 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Very nice, soft, pleasing nose. Fairly bright fruit. The red fruit carries onto the palate, which is pleasing and soft. Really nice balance and texture. More toned down than many 2008s out there... almost a mix of 2007 and 2008. Good, sweet tannins on the finish. Awesome acid. Really nice balance and bright fruit. Definitely one for the cellar.

  • 2007 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Original Vines 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Pleasing forest floor aromas. This earthiness carries onto the palate, though there's still plentiful fruit. Really nice balance. Good acid attack on the finish that goes deep into the finish with some pleasing tartness. A very well made one, and one that will age gracefully in the cellar. I enjoyed more, but similarly to the 2008 Estate; this one's not really worth twice the price.

Flight 3 - Vista Hills (5 Notes)

The primary drive to come here is the view and the cheese plate. We enjoyed both today. The wines, on the other hand, just aren't all that interesting. But I would still recommend it to folks for the view... and the cheese.
