Introduction

This was the third installment of Non-Baller Wine Night at Weygandt Wines in Cleveland Park. There was no theme, just a grab bag of wines. As always, there were some really interesting ones in the bunch. Great times!

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  • 1999 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie 81 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    (1/28/2011)

golden apple colored in the glass. the nose is a bit oxidized, showing sherry and wax candy. creamy palate, almost waxy. there's not much fruit at all. just a tiny bit of pear. there's a really distinct nougat flavor, also some sea salt and brine. over the hill and this oxidation has taken too much out of the wine.

  • 2008 Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (1/28/2011)

light ruby color in the glass, surprisingly so for a young wine. i love the candied cherries on the nose. the palate shows ripping acid and refined tannins that apparently smoothed out after a day being open. fresh fruit laced with some toast. i like this a lot and think it will be really nice in another few years.

  • 2008 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    (1/28/2011)

after being opened for a full day, warm fruit, cinnamon and rhubarb pie on the nose. i love the sweet juiciness of this wine and the way it is backed up with medium tannins and tart acid. some charcoal on the finish.

great nose of meat, earth and cherries. some pine came out with time. soft cherry fruit with a great beef bouillon cube flavors as well. also some red licorice. i love the freshness of this wine. it's so easy to sip.

  • 2000 Château de Chambert Cahors 85 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    (1/28/2011)

plummy color with some cloudiiness. fertilizer, earth and wet leaves on the nose. this would be offputting for many, but i found it interesting. stewed plums on the palate, but there's also this forest floor, peat aspect. tannins have smoothed out with age. not great, but still a fun wine.

  • 2007 Mas Martinet Priorat Menut 90 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (1/28/2011)

i was wowed by this wine, especially at the $20 price point. dark fruit, smoke and charcoal exude from the glass. the tangy acid and the grippy tannins give this almost a crunchy mouthfeel. a lot of stuffing in here, a lot more than just fruit going on. delish.

  • 2001 Columbia Crest Syrah Grand Estates 86 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (1/28/2011)

tasted blind. was really surprised when it was unveiled. the color was light ruby with lots of chunky sediment. tea bags, raspberries and a hint of smoke on the nose. the palate showed raspberry jam, candied cherries and tea. tannins are soft, acid is medium. finish shows root beer barrel candies. this was one of those blind-tasted wines that didn't really stand out to me as a good example of any specific grape. i was confused tasting it, thinking of it as showing some aspects of aged new zealand pinot, maybe some barbera, maybe a zin that shouldn't have been aged that long. overall, it was a fun wine. i always enjoy grand estates no matter what varietal for their simplicity of fruit. interesting to see that they can also hold up for ten years!

  • 2007 Tercero Grenache Watch Hill Vineyard 85 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

    (1/28/2011)

what a unique wine. it may not be great, but it's not worthy of bashing. any wine that brings this much craziness is worth at least 85 points. the nose showed stewed fruit and lots of garbage juice. the palate is briny, almost like dried seaweed, some spice. strange stuff, but oddly intriguing.

  • 2008 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Westside Road Neighbors 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    (1/28/2011)

this is a gorgeous pinot, elegant, sexy and refined. cranberry tart, smoke and some spice on the nose. the palate is really tangy and tart, but so balanced with soft fruit and tannins that just glide along the palate. the finish is very long and fresh, leaving you wanting to drink more.
