  • 2002 Diebolt-Vallois Champagne Blanc de Blancs Fleur de Passion 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Cramant, Champagne

Popped and poured slightly chilled. Light straw in colour. Nose is fresh with notes of citrus, floral and subtle hints of yeast and toast. In the mouth it’s crisp and fresh with lots of minerality and more citrus fruits with some light peach notes. A ton of acidity with a lengthy finish. A beautiful young Champagne that needs 5+ years. Excellent. 92+

Flight 2 - Chablis Flight: (4 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Popped and poured slightly chilled. Light straw in colour showing no signs of age. Slightly restrained nose at first and after some vigorous swirling and some time in the glass it starting giving up hints of minerality and apple notes. Nice tartness on the palate with lemon flavours and a good dose of minerality. Oaky notes come through on the clean and lengthy finish with a good blast of acid. Undoubtedly an excellent wine just too young and not giving up much at this stage. Be great to try this in 3-5 years. Excellent. 90+

  • 2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Popped and poured slightly chilled. Light yellow in colour. Nose is more open than the 2000 but not by much. Again subtle notes of sea shells, minerals, citrus and lightly toasted oak. In the mouth this wine had a lot to say. Big flavours of citrus and saline with loads of minerality. It’s medium to full bodied, high acidity and a long finish that’s precise and focused. Elegant nose with deep flavours. Try again in 3-5 years. Excellent. 92+

  • 2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Popped and poured slightly chilled. Light yellow in colour. This nose is more expressive than the two Les Clos wines giving notes of lemon, lime and sea shells. In the mouth this wine gives killer flavours of citrus fruits, minerality and subtle oak treatment. Medium body, lots of acid with a long finish. A classy wine that offers elegance and power while remaining well focused. Needs 3-5 years. Excellent. 92+

Intense flavours and manages to remains fresh in the mouth while offering a slightly sweeter flavour profile than the Fevre wines. Medium to full body, high acidity and a long persistent finish. Flight 3 - Red Burgundy Flight: (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Opened one hour before pouring. Medium red in colour. Wow—what a nose! Pronounced and enticing with notes of funk, earth, cinnamon hearts and pure red fruits with well-integrated oak. After more coaxing hints of mushrooms and spice. In the mouth there are loads of pure red fruits with some leather and meaty flavours too. The texture is silky and the profile is somewhat masculine while being so elegant and pure at the same time. There is a great amount of acid with firm tannins and an incredibly long finish. This is a great young burg that offers finesse, intensity and lots of complexity. Drinking shockingly well at this stage but this wine will be even better in 5-10+ years. Exceptional. 95+

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Opened one hour before pouring. Medium red in colour. The nose is somewhat tight compared to the Chambertin. After some hearty swirling it opened up a bit and gave a glimpse of its awesomeness with notes of manure, funk and cool red fruits. Intense flavours of strawberries, ripe red cherries and papaya that seem to go on and on. Lots of depth and structure with great acidity and firm tannins and a gorgeous mouth feel although the Chambertin seems to have a bit more finesse. Once this opened up it was incredibly intense and extremely enjoyable. This also needs 5-10+ years to show its full potential. Outstanding. 94+

Flight 4 - Chateauneuf-du-Pape Flight: (3 Notes)

  • 1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanted 4 hours before pouring. Deep ruby red in colour. This is a huge nose of dark cherries, plums, blackberries and black liquorice. There is a whole lot of intensity and concentration on both the nose and palate. Concentrated flavours of blueberries, black currants, cassis and black cherries with loads of structure and length. It’s amazing how this wine can be so concentration, intense and ripe, yet not be overdone, confected or over extracted in any way. My first Hommage and hopefully not my last. I would love to taste this again in 20 years when it’s not so painfully youthful. Excellent. 92+

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanted 4 hours before pouring. Deep red, almost black in colour. The tasting notes for the ’99 could almost be substituted with this one as the wines, at this youthful stage, are very similar. Massive black fruits on the nose with liquorice, leather and hints of earth. Once gain this is insanely big and dense in the mouth with flavours of dark fruits and a lot of tannin and acid. Not cloying or heavy but very rich and round and massively concentrated. So smooth and velvety for such a big wine. This needs 10-20 years. Excellent. 92+

  • 1990 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Double decanted back into the bottle 4 hours before pouring. Medium red with an orange hue throughout and some bricking near the rim. Beautiful mature nose of vegetal funk, sweet red fruits and leather. Soft in the mouth with mainly resolved tannins and a good amount of acidity keeping the wine fresh. My forth time having this wine in the last year and this has been the best showing so far. Drink or hold but I don't see this getting any better. Outstanding.

Flight 5 - Northern Rhone Flight: (3 Notes)

  • 1998 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Decanted for 3 hours then put back in the bottle and served 3 hours later. Deep red in colour, almost black. Tight nose of pepper and black fruits notes but not giving up very much. After letting it sit in the glass for 15min and a ton of swirling it opened up a bit more offering tar, smoke, black pepper, black fruits with hints of barnyard. It’s smooth and concentrated in the mouth with a freshness and purity keeping it from being overdone. Black fruits and leather dominate the flavour profile with gobs of structure reminding you that this wine is way too young to be drinking now. This has only shown a glimpse of what it has to offer and yet it’s still thrilling to drink today. If you have a good stash of these there’s no harm in pulling a cork now. But if you only have a few, wait 5-10+ years. Outstanding. 94+

  • 1998 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Decanted for 2 hours then put back in the bottle and served 3 hours later. Deep red in colour. Unlike the ’98 La Landonne, this wasn’t as tight and was much more open for business. Beautiful nose of red and black fruits, smoke, pepper, worn leather and a gorgeous floral note that adds a feminine touch to this masculine-like profile. Smooth, deep and palate coating flavours of dark fruits, earth, melted asphalt and spice. Like the Landonne, there is a ton of structure and the finish in extremely long and everything is perfectly balanced. Hard to pick a favourite but right now this is singing and gets the nod. Even though this is more open than the Landonne and is drinking well right now, there is more to come in 5-10 years. Exceptional. 95+

  • 1999 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Decanted 4 hours before pouring. Deep red in colour. Between the two La La’s and conversations going on around the table, I didn’t get to focus on this wine as much as I would have liked. Ripest nose of the flight with dark fruits, smoke, rubber, spice and leather. Profile here is once again on the black side of things with flavours of black fruits and some meaty notes as well. This wine is no different than the two La La’s when it comes to structure—there is a lot of it. It also has great balance and a very nice future ahead of it. Give it 10 years. Outstanding. 93+

Flight 6 - Masseto Flight: (2 Notes)

  • 1995 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Decanted for 2 hours then put back in the bottle and served 3 hours later. Most mature smelling wine besides the ‘90 Pegau so far tonight with notes of cherries, plums and earth. It’s soft in the mouth with flavours of cherries, wood, chocolate and earth. Its velvety texture and perfect balance make this a very easy to drink and extremely enjoyable wine. I could drink this on its own any night of the week. This is beautifully aged merlot. Drink or hold. Outstanding.

  • 2000 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Decanted for 2 hours prior to pouring. Big nose of menthol, red fruits, pepper and hints of oak. In the mouth it’s soft and round and offers flavours of red and black cherries, berries and mocha. Much more structure and tannic than the ’95 and is slightly unyielding. While I don’t think this will ever be as good as the 2000, this needs time to show its potential. Excellent. 91+
