  • 2006 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Fiancée

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This was very nice albeit young. Lots of cherry fruit with very fine but abundant tannins, some spices and black pepper and a hint of meat. Slightly hot at times. Big and somewhat modern yet polished and elegant at the same time. I am going to pick up a couple more for the long haul.

  • 1997 Regusci Merlot Stags Leap District

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Big time aromas of cedar, leather, tobacco and aged fruit that jumped out of the glass. Nice nose. On the pallet the wine is very soft. The tannins are gone but there is still quite a bit of acidity. Its all pretty nice until the finish which is pretty weak. Drink up if you've got 'em!

  • 2004 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Flawed

Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT

This bottle had similar raw peanut aromas as the last bottle we had two or three years ago. Though not as intense as that last bottle, the aromas were so offputting that no one wanted to even taste it. Out of the case I split with a friend, the first three bottles have been the same. This is very dissappointing as I love the 06 and 07 vintages and wonder if we got a bad batch. The bottles we have tried are nothing like what the other tasters have noted.

  • 2003 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

I think this wine was slightly flawed as this bottle was nothing like the one I had a couple of years ago. Loads of earth, rubber and funk on the nose which blew off some but never really disappeared. On the pallet, the wine showed better with some tart fruit and a nice dry finish. The funky aromas really detracted from this bottle.

  • 2007 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Ranch

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

After drinking a bunch of old world wines I was a little worried that this would be too much of a fruit bomb for me. While there were loads of rich fruit, there was also a lot of acidity. Wow was this nice. There was some vanilla, chocolate, brambly fruit and spice. I really loved how the acidity kept this fresh. The best zinfandel I have had in a long time.
