Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2007 Cayuse Syrah Armada Vineyard 98 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Ridiculous Syrah! I mean, holy-moly this was an ethereal experience. The majority of the group pinned this as their favorite wine. It had such an unctuous lush plush opulent texture and elegance that was expressed in both the nose and on the palate. It was impossible to resist. Super smoky, meaty, salty, savory, umami, black olives, earth, cassis, anise, tobacco with massive amounts of smokey bacon fat. So much black rock and brooding bloody personality. So much charred fattiness on this baby - its insane. The palate shows more rich masculine play. Great peppery finish - fresh from the grinder. A bloody steak wine. Great balance - with all the layers and massive amounts of flavor the finish is not overdone whatsoever. Layered and absolutely delicious. Everyone loved this one. There is also enough acid to see this improve with some age. Outstanding fruit and wine making. Couldn't recommend this bottling high enough.

  • 2006 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate 95 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Wow was this guy singing on this particular evening. I've had multiple DeLille wines over the past few years and this one showed the best by far - and it wasn't a Grand Ciel!!
So much creamy vanilla, cherry, so heady and big. Massive candied fruit. So floral and blockbuster fruit driven.
Feminine and vanilla all day with touches of cotton candy.
Nice mouth feel. Jolly Rancher flavors. Lovely viscosity and focus with elegant polish. Super young. Really feminine styling. Super opulent and surprising upon reveal.

  • 2001 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, Washington

Darker rustic coloring. Some sediment in the glass. Asian spice, gray pepper corns, licorice, raspberries, cinnamon, clove with some traces of earth and smoke.
Some nice red vegetation coming through with a touch of rubbing alcohol on the back end. The sun roasted tomato accents on the nose and palate were unique - very nice.
Great pure mouth feel. Good finish. Red all the way through with some savory red spice on that finish. Almost a Big Red gum quality. Old World hints here and there. Solid complete wine.

  • 2007 L'Ecole No. 41 Reserve 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

More purple hue. A little less going on on the nose when compared to the rest of the group. Curry spice. Pretty plush nose, but less elegant.
Palate has less in the mid palate. Still good and clean. Purple fruit. Chewy finish. Well made, just over shadowed.

  • 2002 Leonetti Cellar Sangiovese 89 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

More bricking in color than the rest of the group. A little muted on the nose.
Cherry, rusty, thinner and light on the palate. Elegant and refined - more subtle styling.
Dusty acid driven palate. Shorter finish. Really nice, but even more so than the L'Ecole, this was overshadowed.

  • 2004 Walla Walla Vintners Cabernet Franc Columbia Valley 92 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Surprised with this wine. Showed really well - everyone agreed. More ruby in color. More blue fruit driven as a whole.
A little burnt caramel. Rose petals, touches of liqueur. Rusty, cinnamon. Hints of dirty trail with iron gates, cola, maybe even Dr. Pepper.
Palate is nice. More of that metallic play with slivers of green bell pepper. Some savory flavors. Only a tad austere on the back end. Really nice wine.

  • 2005 Leonetti Cellar Reserve Walla Walla Valley 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Darker color. Black veg, anise, molasses, kind of pruney. A little raisinated - almost reductive.
Dryer on the mouth. Shows some nice grip. The finish could be more balanced. Still a nice wine. Needs some more time. Young.

  • 2006 Charles Smith Syrah Royal City 98 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Tied for wine of the night. Uber ripe and heady. Gorgeous pungent nose. So many layers of aromatics and flavors.
Molasses, caramel, red vegetables both sweet and savory peppers. Maraschino cherries.
Blue raspberry, chocolate, purple and red flowers, cotton candy. So incredibly plush. So balanced.
Some light coffee play, light gray rocks, graphite. So awesome. So much royalty in this bottling. I was dizzy with emotion it was so good.
Brioche and sugar cookie city should have been the name...sayin!

  • 2004 Cayuse Tempranillo Impulsivo En Chamberlin Vineyard 97 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

I was blown away by this wine. So much richness but sporting such plush balance.
Bloody Syrah, meaty, smoked, cured bacon, black olive, steak, super savory. The palate is awe inspiring.
The weight shows it to be a masculine wine but there is such elegance and opulence it comes across as supple - like the queen in chess.
Super pungent, layered polished. Great viscosity. Massive bomb of fruit, earth and spice. I'm in love.
