Introduction

A birthday dinner for our friends Paul (1980) and Fiona (1984) with toooo many wines to go around, and not enough of the world's best Char Siew.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

A very bold, bloody, meaty, rustic wine with a tinge of herb/menthol. Seem to taste the grape skins in the wine, which offers a good structure nonetheless. Feels like this mascular wine has potential to it, but it didn't show up when first tasted. missed the chance to re-taste it later during the dinner. It came across llike a body builder who's too shy to flex his muscles for the crowd.

  • 2000 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Mineral nose, crushed shells, crisp and very structured, some butter and cream, fresh and many layers of fruit. It is not so straightforward and keeps u tinking. Get orange peel on the finish. Still think this could go another 5 years or so. Re-tasted this the next night. Get much more honey and minerals on the nose. Definitely benefitted from catching some breath. More lemons come out, and finishes with a rounder fatty oilyness. Recommended to have this a less chilled.

  • 1984 Carmenet Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

This was decanted for 3 hours or more if I am not wrong. A real surprise package! Nice flowery nose, earthy, dark cherries, silky, and very fruit forward. The fruit is rich on the palate and fills the mouth. Lingers and finishes well. Misled to think this was an aged bord, though it had the sweetness of red fruit in a burg. Still holding its weight so well.

  • 1982 Château La Lagune 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Green, capsicums, herb on the nose. A little flat on the fruit, dun get too much fruit, acidity stands out from the fruit and does seem to gel with the wine. Maybe it could have done better with more decanting, which in this case, it probably had 45mins to and hour tops. Nevertheless, it was a disappointing bottle despite the much better reviews on this. And would be the weakest 82 bord that I have come across so far. Could have been a bad bottle anyway. base neck fill, cork was almost totally moist, and mouldy on the top. cork broke at the end and disintegrated.

  • 1998 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Opens up to a flowery nose, some spice, sweet cherries. Rich in plum and jam, and also feel some heat in the wine. Don't think this is ready for now. Re-tasted a night later, and lost all floral scents, replaced by mostly alcohol and jam. Stilll holds its weight in fruit, still full of plums. Should have kept this in the cold room for a much longer time.

  • 1980 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Big ripe nose, leather. Ripe dark fruits, plum, tobacco, spice and mint. A lot of dark ripe plums and dates. Sweet dark chocolate on the back palate. Almost disguises itself as an aged bord which everyone guessed, but i felt there is this sweetness to it that doesnt quite place it there. Overall a very good wine, as with other Montelenas

  • 1988 Château Certan de May 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Lovely elegant flowery nose. So silky, smooth, soft and gentle on the palate. Gentle on fruit, cool on the mid palate, alluring and seductive. Tobacco, slight mint and raspberries combined. Finishes with tea leaves and dried dates. Amazing and outstanding wine! I got to find more of this. WOTN without a doubt
