Introduction

Another great pre-auction event. Some of the wines poured were the best examples, but others were absolutely stunning. You win some you lose some that's all I gotta say.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2008 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley

Light gold or straw coloring. Very floral, lots of citrus white fruits, fake candy plastic scent. Refreshing, good acid, flavors dances around the mouth long after the wine is gone. Good mid-palate feel. Excellent Viognier…First experience with this winery. 91+ pts.

  • 1928 Château Haut-Brion 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Garnet/orange/red coloring, browning towards the edge. The nose was rather closed; all I picked up was some faint floral, tea and nutty notes. On the palate this wine was pretty awkward; I tasted stewed tomatoes, blood and iodine. After about five minutes in the glass the wine died. Showing its age. I showed up late to this event so that might have affected the score. 87 pts.

  • 1959 Château Mouton Rothschild Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Brownish red coloring. On the nose this resembled an oxidized tawny port, with a sweet caramel nuttiness. Very disappointing…pretty much dead on arrival. Watered down on the palate, nutty and floral. Finish was almost non-existent. Wine feel apart in the glass after a few minutes. Honestly this wine probably shouldn’t have been poured. If this was any indication of the quality of the other 1959 mouton that was being sold by the seller, I for one wouldn’t buy. I reserve scoring this wine due to the fact that it wasn’t a sound bottle.

  • 1966 Château Palmer Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very light brown, tawny color. Toasted walnuts, sour tobacco, sweet candied scents. Tawny port like, except thin and watered down on the palate. Very disjointed…clearly dead on the palate after a minutes in the mouth. I had this same wine a few months back and it was a gorgeous classic old claret. No Score

  • 1981 Château Lascombes

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Super cloudy brown color. The color was far darker brown than all of the above wines. Very oxidized…Again a wine that shouldn’t have been served. I was looked at funny when I poured the rest of my glass out. Flawed/Cooked….Awful! Even though this was from a weaker vintage this still should have shown well. I had a ’81 Pichon Baron five months prior that was beautiful. No Score given.

  • 1996 Château Latour Grand Vin 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Inky purple in color. Intense nose of graphite mixed with lots of dark fruit and some mocha/Coffee. Nose followed through to the palate. Still very youthful, tannins very noticeable, elegant pure fruit. This wine didn’t disappoint. 95+ pts.

  • 1989 Opus One 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Limited notes on this. One of the two last wines I tasted before the auction started. Drinking very nice right now. Mature nose of leather/tobacco and dark fruits. Got some dark chocolate/coffee along with cherries and earth on the palate. Much better than I thought it was going to be. 92 pts.

  • 1991 Opus One 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Limited notes on this as well. I am not really a Opus fan but I have to say this was an excellent wine. Pencil lead and floral on the nose. Well balanced with leather/tobacco notes on the palate, not over oaked like most of the recent vintages of this wine are. 91 pts.

  • 1997 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT

Bricking slightly at the edges but with a solid crimson colored core. Classic tuscan nose of cherries, tobacco and some rustic earthiness. Cherry flavoring I detected on the nose followed through to the palate, tannins/acidity is perfectly in balance with each other.
I know I have a thing for great Italian wines, but this was no doubt the finest Flaccianello I have had the pleasure of drinking. I really need to stock up on this beauty. 94+ pts.

  • 1997 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Mature on the nose with notes of smoke, bacon fat and little earthiness. Got some pepper, smoked meats, bitter dark chocolate, well integrated tannins w/bright acidity. As I mentioned above I really enjoyed both of Guigal’s La La wines, both showing very well. I think I will give the nod to the Landonne which I preferred over this. 93 pts.

  • 1997 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Expressive on the nose as well as on the palate…notes of pepper, coffee, meatiness, earthy. Really enjoyed both of Guigal’s La La wines, this I thought was showing better than the Mouline. 94 pts.

  • 2002 Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Color darkish red purple, no bricking. On the nose sweet black fruits, tobacco, little vanilla. On the palate blackberries, little plum, tobacco, asian spices, long finish…..Excellent napa cab. Overheard some people saying that it doesn’t live up to its hype. I probably wouldn’t plunk down $500+, that being said I do like the how well integrated the tannins, fruit and oak are within this wine. Obviously a well made wine, but not worth the price tag for me. 95+ pts.

Pretty average napa/generic cali cab. Nice bottle, but just not great.
