Florence & Tuscany

Introduction

My girlfriend and I spent a week in Florence and Tuscany on holiday. The focus was on the food and wine where we ate at delicious location and visited wineries (mostly from Chianti Classico). There were numerous other wines not recorded online as they were house wines poured from mystery chianti flasks.

Flight 1 - Day 1: Florence (2 Notes)

Aperitivo at the Frescobaldi Wine Bar before heading out to Il Santo Bevitore for dinner.
Had my first taste of Lardo and loved it.

  • 2005 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Trento Brut

    Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Trentino, Trento

    (5/9/2011)

Poured by the glass at Frescobaldi Wine Bar in Florence. Blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero.

Nose: Yeasty bready nose with hints of tropical fruit

Taste: Crisp but with some nice weighted body. Good balance of fruit and minerality. A lovely sparkling wine with some finesse.

  • 2007 Fontodi Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/9/2011)

Popped and poured. Drank over 3 hours.

Nose: A little tight on the start but when it opened up, boy oh boy, was this one concentrated young Chianti Classico. Black fruit, tar, earth notes and the typical iron/blood notes. Lots of depth and power.

Taste: Still very young and definitely a good representation of the 2007 vintage for Chianti Classico. Good concentration of fruit with a beautiful tannin structure and well balanced. Need to find more of this. Paired very well with the range of Italian dishes ranging from Lardo to Guinea Fowl.

Flight 2 - Day 2: Florence (3 Notes)

Mega protein dinner at Trattoria Sostanza. My first Vernaccia. A shame that we didn't let the Chianti Classico Riserva breathe a lot more, but it was very delicious even at infancy.

  • 2008 Guicciardini Strozzi Vernaccia di San Gimignano Cusona 1933

Italy, Tuscany, San Gimignano, Vernaccia di San Gimignano

    (5/10/2011)

Popped and poured. Drank over an hour. My first Vernaccia.

Nose: Lemon peel, crushed rocks and floral notes. Rather pleasing and refreshing

Taste: Very crisp with an electric acidity balanced off with citrus notes and a touch of vanilla. Rather long mineral finish.

A delicious quaffing white wine but definitely with some quality. Went brilliantly with the cold cuts and mixed antipasti.

  • 2006 Antinori Chianti Classico Marchese Antinori Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/10/2011)

Popped and poured. Drank over an hour and a half.

Nose: A rich and concentrated nose. The oak definitely comes through on this wine but it is well balanced by the fruit notes. Clearly very young and needs lots more time.

Taste: The richness carries over to the palate with chunks of dark creamy fruit coming through. Delicious through and through and just enough acid to show it's 'Italian'. Tannins are still robus and will need a couple of years to smooth over. The oak treatment and signs of a hot vintage are definitely present as well and may not appease Sangiovese purists.

Overall a very delicious wine that went very well with the Florentine Steak I had. The richness of the wine had a very modern and international touch to it compared with other Chianti Classico Riservas I've had but nevertheless, still a tasty and well made wine.

  • 2009 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Vermentino Bolgheri

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

    (5/10/2011)

Popped and poured. Drank over an hour. 100% Vermentino. Stainless steel

Nose: Bright and fruity with white flowers and stone fruit. Very aromatic and fragrant

Taste: Absolutely delightful. A touch weightier than the Vernaccia but richer and vibrant. Very well made and delicious. Would go well with heavier white meats and lighter red meats due to its richness.

A table favourite, which fared better than the Vernaccia.

Flight 3 - Day 3: Florence (1 Note)

The solo bottle at our dinner at Trattoria 4 Leoni. The low point of our wine adventures.

  • 2008 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Volte Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/11/2011)

Popped and poured. Drank over 2 hours.

Nose: Sweet cherries and dark fruits. A nice head of mixed spices.

Taste: Rather soft on the palate, lacking some structure. Nice load of mix red and dark fruits with some mineral and earth character. An OK wine but couldn't help but feel that the wine was a little underwhelming. It had lacked a lot of the vibrance of the other Italian wines I've over over the past few days.

Flight 4 - Day 4: Chianti Classico - Castello di Montsanto (3 Notes)

I had wanted to visit this place after tasting their 2001 Il Poggio Riserva 3 years ago and was blown away by it. A wonderful and beautiful estate with an amazing cellar. We were the only visitors because they initially had to cancel my appointment due to an event in their castle later in the afternoon and evening. It was reserved by some German insurance company, go figure.

Their NEMO was a beast even after 12 years but delicious. Their Chardonnay has converted me back into trying Chardonnay.

  • 2007 Castello di Monsanto Chardonnay Fabrizio Bianchi Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/12/2011)

Popped and poured. 50% in steel, 50% in French oak barrels for 6 months

Nose: A little tight as it had just been opened. A nice hay/straw-like quality to it and a stony character. The fruits played a backseat role here

Taste: Smooth and rich, not over the top; neither lean nor fat. Just the right amount of steel and oak. A lovely dry style of Chardonnay with tinges of lemon peel and a slight hint of a green note to it which balanced well with the white fruit and floral notes.

Overall a very nice and well priced Chardonnay.

  • 2008 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/12/2011)

Popped and poured. 90% Sangiovese 10% Canaiolo & Colorino. 50% matured in Slavonian oak for 12 months, 50% matured in French oak for 15 months

Nose: Very fresh with clean red fruits nicely accented by barnyard notes and cinammon. The classic blood/iron notes appear on the mid-palate along with a touch of vanilla. A deliciously appealing nose.

Taste: Fresh raspberries on the palate, once again very clean tasting with vibrant acidity and good structure. A medium bodied wine that is ready to rock now and for the next 5 years. Delicious through and through at a good price point.

  • 2000 Castello di Monsanto Nemo Vigneto Il Mulino Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/12/2011)

Popped and poured. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured 18 months in new French oak.

Nose: This is a big boy. Powerful nose of blackcurrant, dark and milk chocolates, italian herbs and hints of cream cheese (?)

Taste: On the palate, this is big and bold. Almost a fruit bomb but the power and purity of the fruit is incredible and delicious. This had just been opened and will only get better with more air. Very rich but balanced with a very integrated tannin structure. Surprised me with a touch of spice at the finish.

Overall, this can be drunk now and for another 5-8 years, but will need some air for the flavours to develop. As I was tasting this, I just knew that it had to breathe more for the layers of flavours to unravel. This is a wine for those who love the rich full bodied wines but want some sensibility and balance to them. Very very good wine.

Flight 5 - Day 4: Chianti Classico - Isole e Olena (6 Notes)

Paolo's wife, Marta, hosted us that day and she was delightful. Their Cepparello was stunning and complex. Lots of skill and passion here in Isole e Olena. Apparently their Vin Santo is made in a 'non-vintage' style where they blend various vintages. We also got to taste a wine from their Piedmont estate. There was an older couple visiting as well from Canada where the husband is a certified but not practicing sommelier; good conversations ensued.

  • 2008 Isole e Olena Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/12/2011)

Poured from a bottle opened in the morning. 80% Sangiovese 15% Canaiolo 5% Syrah

Nose: Rather deep and dense nose for a basic Chianti Classico but showing some complexities some herb and earth. But it still had a vibrant quality to it.

Taste: A well rounded Chianti Classico brimming with forest fruit with a spicy and sappy finish. Pretty good wine, I would think this would need more air and time.

  • 2007 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/12/2011)

Poured from a bottle opened in the morning. 100% Sangiovese. 1.5 years in oak

Nose: Very aromatic with dried herbs, hay, tar and cherries. Very robust and refined but with class.

Taste: A rather savoury wine with hints of rose and thyme. Still tight on the tannins but loaded with fruit. Good balance of power and elegance. This will have to sit in your cellar for a while.

  • 2006 Isole e Olena Syrah Collezione de Marchi Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/12/2011)

    Popped and poured. 100% Syrah

Nose: A little initial sulphur on the nose which blew away in time to reveal wonderful fragrance of dried hay, herbs, juicy red currants and some chocolate and mocha. We kept going back to smell this wine as it kept getting better and better during the tasting.

Taste: Still very tight and structured. This clearly needs a lot more air. Couldn't get much from it at this point other than the precision of the flavours on the palate.

I would very much like to taste this wine again when it has opened up.

  • 2004 Isole e Olena Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/12/2011)

Poured from a bottle opened in the morning. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Nose: Had all the trimmings of a modern new world style of Cabernet without being over the top. But it also retained the 'terroir' of Tuscany with this brick/hay smell that I get in many Chianti Classico. I was quite impressed with the showing of this Cabernet Sauvignon.

Taste: Oh so tight with drying tannins, this is a sleeper. But through the structure you get very clean and pure fruit with some secondary herbs and hints of graphite and tar. Not as big as the '00 Nemo, but a more graceful style. I would like to see how this wine develops further or at least opens up.

  • 2003 Isole e Olena Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

    (5/12/2011)

    Drank from an open bottle.

Marta explained that her husband wants to create a consistent quality of Vin Santo year on year so each year's release is a blend of several years (kinda like a NV). But they remain in barrels for at least 7 years from harvest.

Nose: Nutty notes with barnyard, honey, roasted notes and cinnamon. A touch of alcohol was spiking a bit.

Taste: Very raisiny with lovely almond and caramel midpalate. The brown butter and sugarcane finish was a pleasure. Very viscous in the mouth. This is something you have to sip slowly, but very delicious and complex.

  • 2007 Proprietà Sperino Uvaggio

Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Coste della Sesia

    (5/12/2011)

Popped and poured. 70% Nebbiolo 15% Vespolina 15% Coratina
From Paolo's other estate up North in Lessona, currently run by his son.

Nose: Very floral notes with some hoisin sauce, pepper, spice and smoke. A very unique and interesting wine on the nose, never experienced it before hence I'm not too sure how to place this.

Taste: Very smooth on the palate, despite being just opened. Fresh red raspberries along with some secondary white fruit notes which made this wine very interesting. A lighter style of wine, almost like a Pinot in terms of body but flavours are very unique but delicious nevertheless. Would like to see how this wine tastes after decanting.

Flight 6 - Day 4: Chianti Classico - Dinner at Osteria de Panzanelle (1 Note)

Highly recommended online and from a couple (they own an estate in Chianti Classico) I met at a tasting in Singapore. Drank from a half bottle: very satisfying Chianti Classico

  • 2007 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/12/2011)

Popped and poured from a half bottle. Drank over 1.5 hours.

Nose: Outside of the bright cherries, luscious red fruit and dark cocoa there was a strange salty biscuit smell, very similar to the Italian Bibanesi biscuit. That note did lessen as the wine opened up.

Taste: Tasted quite delicious. A modern Italian Chianti Classico. It had all the stuffing of a good well made daily Chianti Classico. Good concentration and flavour of fruit, nice blood aspect to it as well as some dried herbs. A delicious wine that paired with the variey of Italian foods we had.

Overall this is a good go-to wine in view of the price and quality. It's hard to go wrong with this wine and it will be able to match with any savoury dish. Just gotta let this breathe for a bit.

Flight 7 - Day 5: Montalcino - Biondi Santi (2 Notes)

I was excited to visit the legendary winery but was left wanting more. Was first given an relatively negative (and honest) opinion of the estate from our host in Castello di Monsanto (apparently her husband works in Banfi). At Biondi Santi we were hosted by Lauren, originally from New York. Other participants came from Denmark and South American. The Riserva was solid and delicious but the wines we sampled that day were not life changing. Given the pedigree and amount I paid, Biondi Santi needed to be life changing.

  • 2007 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Rosso di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

    (5/13/2011)

Poured from a bottle opened the night before.

Nose: Initial hit of cherry cola followed by elements of cut stems, licorice, touch of fish sauce and tree sap

Taste: Despite being opened last night, it was still a touch grippy due to the tannins. Very fresh dark fruits of elegance and purity along with Biondi Santi's high acid.

This wine is still pretty young so the notes were still quite primary. The nose was more interesting.

  • 2005 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    (5/13/2011)

Poured from a bottle opened the last night.

Nose: Meatier notes compared with the rosso; stewed meats yet floral as well. Good depth in the nose.

Taste: A heavier medium body but still possess the freshness and tartness of the fruit and acid. But throughout the tasting I felt that there wasn't much going on; perhaps it's shut down.

Flight 8 - Day 5: Montalcino - Lunch in Sant Angelo in Colle & Dinner in Montalcino (3 Notes)

After Biondi Santi we had a delicious lunch in the small quiet town of Sant Angelo in Colle at Il Leccio. We had a delicious quaffer from the half bottle of Banfi Rosso.

We had an early dinner at the Fortezza Enoteca in Montalcino. I bought a '97 Salicutti Brunello, my most expensive wine purchase yet. The Soldera Riserva I tasted, now that was life changing.

  • 2008 Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

    (5/13/2011)

Popped and poured from a half bottle. Drank over 1.5 hrs

Nose: Bright red fruits with some black plums. A hint of vegetal notes with some cream

Taste: The fruit carries over to the palate with a nice helping of it. Not over the top, quite well balanced. Everything is in place but this wine was not made to impress but simply to enjoy. Went well with our lunch.

  • 2004 Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    (5/13/2011)

    Ordered by the glass.

Didn't take formal notes for this.

Found it very delicious. Had a nice sweet and savoury quality to it and the quality of the '04 vintage shows. Good concentration and power, but showing lovely aromatics and palate complexities in the form of herbs and floral notes. In addition, good acid and sweet tannins. Went superb with the charcuterie I ate.

  • 2004 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    (5/13/2011)

Drank by the glass. Tasting portion. No formal notes.

Wow...this was altogether different from any Brunello I had. The nose and palate had a crazy complex sweet, sour & savoury fruit and throughout there were pseudo-oxidative notes similar to a vin santo; notes of almonds and brown butter were detected. Great finish. Had a lightness yet concentration to it without the tart acid but still fresh. What an amazing wine!

Flight 9 - Day 6: Chianti Classico - Castello di Ama (4 Notes)

After figuring out where their office was and how to park the tour was underway. There was a French family going for the tour but not the tasting (that cost more). Ama had beautiful contemporary art specially commissioned on the estate due to the passion of wine and art from the owners. We were treated to a private tasting and some charcuterie and cheeses. The quality of Ama was very impressive, very refined and elegant; almost like a 'French Chianti Classico'

  • 2009 Castello di Ama Al Poggio Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

Popped and poured. Blend of Chardonnay with Pinot Griogio

Nose: Very aromatic from the bottle. Floral, citrus and honeysuckle notes with an underlying minerality. Very expressive.

Taste: A little oily on the palate which I like. Clean and elegant. The dry fruity flavours of stone fruit came through. Quite a harmonious white quaffer.

  • 2009 Castello di Ama Il Chiuso Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

Popped and poured. Blend of Sangiovese and Pinot Noir.

Nose: It had a nose very reminiscent of a fruity red burg with some Tuscan earthiness I usually get from Chianti in it. Very aromatic notes of cherries and sweet licorice.

Taste: Truly a blend of Sangiovese and Pinot Noir because I get individual and integrated notes from these two elements. Full of vibrant red fruit, fine tannins and a long finish. Very refined. Delish!

  • 2007 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/14/2011)

Popped and poured. 80% Sangiovese, 20% a selection of malvasia nera, merlot and cabernet franc

Nose: Very rich nose. The merlot comes out with some spice on the nose. A delightful hit of olive tapenade at the backend. Very cool climate kind of bouquet.

Taste: Still very young and primary, needs lots of time in the cellar or in the air. A very refined power compared to other Chianti Classicos I've had over the past week. A darker refined style. Good structure and loaded with sweet tannins. A gentleman's Chianti Classico

  • 2007 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/14/2011)

Popped and poured. Predominantly Sangiovese with a touch of merlot

Nose: Darker and greater depth still on the nose compared to their Chianti Classico. This is some serious stuff. 40% new oak brings out some creamy aspects but nothing over the top. Very refined.

Taste: A blend of blackberries and red fruit. Very good concentration and purity. As this had barely any time to breathe, it was still very primary with chewy tannins. Let this one lie down for a while. This will be worth the wait.

Flight 10 - Day 6: Chianti Classico - Felsina Beradenga (10 Notes)

Located just at the edge of the border of Chianti Classico, Felsina makes some great wine. I loved it's consistency of quality throughout its range. Their delicious oaked chardonnay and fruity sauvignon blanc was a great starter. Their Rancia and Fontalloro was delicious and I had a difficult time choosing between the two as my fave!

We visited their estate, cellars and even said hi to their hunting and truffle dogs! Saw a secret stash of bottles in the corner of their packaging room. Apparently the owner is experimenting with a Metodo Classico Spumante since the 2010 vintage; not for the market yet.

  • 2007 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga I Sistri Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

    Opened in the morning.

Nose: Very fresh with hits of lime and fresh herbs. Touch of richness of oak could also be detected.

Taste: Opulent. Big and creamy but still had everything i check. Very fresh with notes of white flowers and a hints of petroleum. Normally not a big fan of oaked chardonnays but this hit the spot.

  • 2008 Castello di Farnetella Sauvignon

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

Opened in the morning. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Nose: Very new world on the nose. A slightly fruitier style that reminded me of NZ SB in warmer parts of NZ. Unmistakeably Sauvignon Blanc. Notes of pears on the midpalate and hints of spice at the backend.

Taste: Clean, sweet tropical fruit including notes of guava. A rich style of sauvignon blanc but with a good dose of acid as well. Very delicious. This will easily be a crowd pleaser.

  • 2007 Castello di Farnetella Chianti Colli Senesi

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Colli Senesi

    (5/14/2011)

Opened from this morning. 92% Sangiovese, 8% Merlot. Tasted side by side with the regular Chianti Classico from Felsina

Nose: Clean nose of red fruit, blood iron and dried herbs. Very typically Tuscan.

Taste: Ripe red fruit, hints of tobacco, earth and herbs. Medium bodied and clean tasting. Nothing terribly memorable but had everything in its place.

  • 2008 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/14/2011)

Opened in the morning. Tasted head to head with their Chianti Colli Senese

Nose: Similar to the Colli Senese but with added dimensions of cocoa and more spice.

Taste: Again, similar red fruit with good concentration and other secondaries, but overall the Chianti Classico had a deeper and more robust palate.

  • 2005 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/14/2011)

Tasting this again 2 years later.

Nose: Classic Felsina red fruit, blood iron, but not has an interested and distinct of a ginseng and a local Chinese medical hall; some slight cream.

Taste: A dry style with clean flavours, nice acid. Right now it's giving me more phenolic components from the oak. Still a little tight or perhaps closed at this juncture since the bottle was opened.

  • 2007 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/14/2011)

Opened since last night. 100% Sangiovese from their Rancia vineyard.

Nose: At this stage, it has very rich delicious red and dark fruit in addition to the cream from the oak. A deeper style of Chianti Classico

Taste: Still very tight on the palate but very delicious, the 07 was good to this vineyard. Rather well balanced and refined as well. Hard time choosing between this and the Fontalloro. I bought a couple of these guys.

  • 2007 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

Opened in the morning. Tasted alongside the '07 Rancia.

Nose: The most aromatic of the Felsina range. Rich coconut from the oak comes through but not without some delicious fruit, spices and a perfume-like aroma. Very seductive and sexy wine.

Taste: Still very tight with good structure, sweet tannins, great balance. Most elegant of the lot. Not able to get much except primary flavours but the quality is definitely there. Compared to the Rancia this one is more elegant but not as dark. This one is a very very good Chianti Classico.

  • 2006 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Maestro Raro Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

Opened in the morning. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Nose: Nice delicious cab notes. Dark concentrated fruit, very aromatic with a mild herbaceous note which I like and some black pepper. I detected a weird a curry note but it just have been an off aroma.

Taste: Compared to the Castello di Monsanto NEMO and Isole e Olena Cabernet (both 100% Cabernet Sauvignon), this wine was not as big and burly. More of a medium/heavy body play with lots of stuff in balance. Still very young and primary, giving this wine a lot of future. Structured with robust tannins; made in quite an International style of cabernet so it's hard to pin down what style it follows, but well made and delicious.

  • 2001 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico

    (5/14/2011)

Nose: Heady nose of wonderful aromatics. Burnt butter, cookies, almond biscuits, coconut and honey

Taste: Very lovely and balanced. Sweet candied fruit, haw, honey with a burn cookie finish.

My favourite Vin Santo of the trip

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/14/2011)

Nose: A little closed. Some nice fruit and italian herbs.

Taste: Quite a straightforward red wine with some delightful red fruit and a coffee finish.. Well made but clearly overshadowed by the Rancia and Fontalloro.

Flight 11 - Day 7: Florence (2 Notes)

Dinner with friend's family and other friend. The 8 of us dined at La Giostra. Predominently Tuscan on the menu with some Germanic influences due to the owner. Liked the food, not too hot on the interior. Wine selection was great though. The first two bottles of Chianti Classico were delicious but fell short of the 07 vintage I had tasted.

Tasting of the Syrah a second time this week, now more opened, was exciting as it really showed the quality and concentration of this Tuscan Syrah.

  • 2005 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    (5/15/2011)

No formal notes. Popped and poured, decanted for half an hour. Drank over an hour.

Overall a well made wine, but did not meet my expectations especially after visiting the winery and tasting their 07 efforts. Good depth of flavour and balance but lacked the concentration of the '07. But lots of aromatics and layers of flavours on the palate. Other than the mixture of fruit, there was a good mix of wild herbs and bell peppers. Oak was kept in check quite well.

  • 2006 Isole e Olena Syrah Collezione de Marchi Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (5/15/2011)

Tasted again. Decanted for a half hour and drank over an hour

Nose: Similar to my previous notes, but far more open for business. Aromas were more distinct and deeper with added floral note. Very addictive.

Taste: On the palate, the flavours were bursting forth as the wine started to unwind. Almost like a blend of a Southern and Northern Rhone Syrah. The fruit was very vibrant, almost like a southern Rhone but had the nice peppery notes and elegance of a northern rhone. This is an incredibly wonderful wine that will only get better. Went incredibly well with the thinly sliced beef with rosemary herbs.

Flight 12 - Day 8: Florence (1 Note)

Lunch at Mercado Centrale (Central Market). They forgot our order but we had discretely poured out the American wine into the drinking glasses and enjoyed it while waiting for the food. Very delicious and good wine that really needs the air. What a way to end the holiday: with some American Love!

Popped and poured. Drunk discretely at the market from Chianti clinking glasses. Bottle breathed for 2 hours. No formal notes.

Initially had strong whiffs of alcohol while eventually blew off. A very rich nose, the Syrah was the most dominant but it had a nice underlying load of dark fruit from the Cabernet. The oak added a nice layer or aromatics to the nose as well.

The taste a little off balance and disjointed within the first half hour, but with sufficient time, it started getting together. From the nose, I had expected a very big and rich wine but it didn't taste as big and heavy as the nose suggested; still a full bodied wine but not to the extent I had expected. My friends had noted how refined and balanced this was. The richness was structured within a very elegant palate. Loads of fruit, cool minerals, tobacco, graphite and some dried greens. A very delightful wine that shows the quality of the fruit and skill of the maker, assuming you give it enough air.

Closing

The DOCG regulation for 80% Sangiovese and the remaining 20% can be whatever the winemaker likes really gives Chianti Classico wines a full spectrum and styles and flavours. I enjoyed all the winery visits as they each had something different to bring to the table. Monsanto had a beautiful cellar, estate and wines that matched my anticipation. I could see the hardcore seriousness and passion in Isole. The heritage of Biondi Santi was clear in its history and quality. Ama was one of the most unique with its contemporary art exhibits and stellar wine while i was impressed Felsina single minded purpose in making consistently good and great wines across their range of products.

The most favourite was a tie between the two castellos: Monsanto and Ama while the least favourite was Biondi Santi. While it was great, it somehow didn't live up to the expectation. The rest were stellar.
