Introduction

Richard Brazier of Ancient and Modern wines presented a long flight of St Emilion and Pomerol wines from the famed 1998 Vintage
For Left Bank fanatics like us this was an excellent opportunity to compare.

Unfortunately London traffic meant that we arrived late and rushed throught he St Emilion flight hence the notes are short and we also decided not to provide ratings.

  • 1998 Château Monbousquet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A good surprise and a usually underrated maybe less well known wine that most at the tasting loved and voted 2nd after conseillante
Some rotten leaves, earth and although light on the finish very enjoyable. Drink now and quickly as this is not a longevity wine

  • 1998 Château Troplong Mondot

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

3rd favourite and a very nice overall wine, fresh , citrusy, lots of structure and although it is a bit plain to start it feels it has the stuff to go a long way. Wait 5yrs

  • 1998 Château Pavie

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Mild rotten leaves, some sour tannin, but otherwise very classic wine for it's style. Shame had to try it in a rush

  • 1998 Château Angélus

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Rich dense nose, very nice. Again just like the pavie tried it in a rush and thus incomplete tn. More appealing to left bank lovers like us have to say

  • 1998 Château La Fleur-Pétrus 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Did not get this wine. Again deep red as expected and with mild floral nose. An ok wine but not the wine we expected especially from such a year. A non event. 87
