2000 Bordeaux Retrospect

Tasted Saturday, May 21, 2011 by Sleepy Dave with 938 views

Introduction

A group of friends organized this event to evaluate how are the Bordeaux doing in the aged of 10 from this excellent vintage. 2bottles of each wine so that everyone will have sufficient pour (we have about 16pax), 6wines (11bottles, only 1bot of Cos'd) from Left Bank and 5wines (8bottles + 1 Magnum). However, 2bottles of each wine also showed some bottle variations too, some ppl even shouted: how could this be the same wine?

Overall, I'm kinda disappointed with the vintage from the wines that I tasted today. Healthy fruits, lush and soft in texture and seems drinking quite nicely now. With the relatively soft structured and this level of fruits, I'm not really sure how will the wine aged and will they eventually turn out to be a great wine given the price and rave reviews. That's being said: To me, 2000 is a very good vintage but certainly not a great vintage (1990, 2005).

Flight 1 - GG to start (1 Note)

Quite disappointed when I tasted.

  • 2007 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs

    Germany, Nahe

    Decanted for about 60mins. Perfume aromas of floral and mineral, with relatively sweet core for a GG that display honey citrus as well as lemony note. Sweet entry, very lush and rich but where is the very firm acidity backbone? Rather flabby and disappointed. The medium length finish is a bit sweet too. This simply lack of the definition. I was left early and my friend updated me that after chilled and decanted for another 1.5-2hrs, the wine has actually show very well, sweetness mellow down and show very good structured, depth and refinement.

Flight 2 - Left Bank (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Talbot

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. Nose of soil, light tobacco, spices and alcohol. Soft and warm entry along with good acid that lend freshness to the barnyard, blackberry flavors. Soft structure and texture, the finish is kinda lean and fading, an off bottle?

  • 2000 Château Talbot 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 2. Compared to the weak showing of the 1st bottle, this is another story, still pretty closed with deeper nose. The palate is much richer with better fruits concentration and better dimension with the spicy tone. More mid palate punch, longer finish with new wood and sweet dark plum after taste. Already approachable. A pretty good wine but some how lack of excitement.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. A more serious wine on both nose and palate compare to wine 1. This has sweet blackcurrant, cassis with spices, quite deep and I can feel the tightness. Good integration of acidity and tannin, however, though this has firmer structure compare to wine 1, this is in fact quite soft with tobacco, leathery, coffee and new wood aftertaste on the juicy, long mineral finish. Quite charming but still, lack of excitement.

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 2. Similar case as wine 1, this is a much powerful with good structured that seemingly more like a 2000 Bordeaux! Powerful nose with spicy oak dominated the aromatic profile with underlying aromas of leather mint and blackcurrant that very much like a Pontet. Very rich on the palate, firm structured with medium level of fresh, ripe tannin that seems integrated quite a bit with meatiness as well as mineral and new oak aftertaste on the really smooth, silky finish. Very good wine, however, this doesn't possess the firm structured, high level of tannin that stained the palate with better depth of the 2000 Pontet that I had 2yrs ago. Seem this is pretty much open for business!

Flight 4 (1 Note)

This is a very weak Cos'd, even the 2001 & 2004 is a much better wine.

  • 2000 Château Cos d'Estournel 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. Expressive aromas of gravel, creme de cassis, tobacco with a touch of alcohol. This too is lack of depth, but the complexity of the flavors is not bad and already approachable with its rich blueberry and blackberry fruits along with dark chocolate and spices. Silky tannin with lovely juicy sweet finish. A good wine but no surprised.

Showing really well, delicious and this voted to be the wine of the day by many.

  • 2000 Château Rauzan-Ségla 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. Soft seductive aromas of vanilla, mint, sweet cassis fruits with toasted coffee and alcohol spiciness, quite deep. Very rich on the palate with lots of sweet fruits that buffered off the tannin that leads to very smooth, complex finished that lingered with mineral, sweet dark fruits and spicy aftertaste. Fresh. So far the best showing and most complete wine though lack of substances to boost.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

My personal favorite. Solidly built with power, depth but also very refined.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Barton 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Alcohol :: 12.5%
    Bottle 1. By far the most powerful wine in the line up. Not much to offer on the nose but the palate is, powerful, rich with good concentration of fresh sweet fruits and lots of tannin and muscle to shed. Almost palate staining intensity. Velvety long finish with tobacco and leather aftertaste. A wine with refinement. I would say this has the best aging potential follow by the 2nd bottle of Pontet Canet.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Barton 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Alcohol :: 12.5%
    Bottle 2. Similar notes with the 1st one on the palate but this showed better on the nose with complex aromas of sandalwood, leather, earth, blackcurrant and spices. Very rich and powerful, mouth coating intensity and very fine tannin that leads to the powerful long finish. 89-91

Flight 7 (2 Notes)

Good but rather green.

  • 2000 Château Sociando-Mallet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Alcohol :: 12.5%
    Bottle 2. Similar notes with the 1st one but this show better integration and more evolved on the palate with mineral and juicy blackberry aftertaste on the long finish. This certainly show better fruits than the 1st bottle, but still, the 'green' is dominated the flavor profile.

  • 2000 Château Sociando-Mallet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Alcohol :: 12.5%
    Bottle 1. Opps, the aromatic profile of this wine is very unique from all the wines above. Like a gathering of all sorts of herbs, this has complex aromas of medicinal, herbaceous, licorice, charcoal smokiness and eucalyptus that seems too green and lack of fruits. Another powerful wine, though not at the level of wine 4, tannic and palate staining, long finish with eucalyptus aftertaste. I dun really like the flavors profile here but this is a very well-made wine.

Delicious, this is a very good Pomerol that won't break the bank.

  • 2000 Château Montviel 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. Restraint on the nose with aromas of soil, leather and blueberry. Wow, what a rich, rounded palate that strike the perfect balance of the tannin and succulent dark and red berry fruits that formed a good structured that move on to the really juicy, sexy detail complex long finish. This is so elegance and poised with almost milk chocolate like creaminess that caressing the palate all the way from the entry to the finish. Drinking beautifully now and have some upside potential though I suspect will not be a drastic improvement.

Flight 9 (2 Notes)

The most powerful, structured wine but also a bit too extracted which I'm very curious how is the evolution. If the tannin will ever round up and mellow down, this is undoubtedly a great Troplong Mondot.

  • 2000 Château Troplong Mondot 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Bottle 1. Deep pitch aromas of perfume floral, very sweet blueberry and blackcurrant tone intermixed with leather and mineral, complex! By far the most powerful and structured wine that the intensity of fruits and extract giving a good punch and almost explosive like entry. The has the best substances in today line up with complex flavors of bitter sweet cocoa, dark chocolate and concentrated sweet dark fruits. Very firm tannin, but I feel it is a little bit heavy and over extracted hence the bitterness infused long finish that lingered with sweet mineral tones, smoke and charcoal. I’m very interested to taste this again in another 8-10yrs time in order to check the evolution of this wine, especially if the bitterness from the tannin will tone down and evolved into this juice. 89-91

Flight 10 (2 Notes)

Showing well.

  • 2000 Château Figeac 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. Ringer? Such herbaceous aromas with roasted herb, angelica root, eucalyptus, can this be a Coonawarra cab? The entry is soft with sweet fruits and freshness, quite rich on the palate with soft structure that accumulated slightly better weight and power on the finish with eucalyptus aftertaste. Pretty good and this too is pretty approachable with its soft texture and feminine style, though I don’t really like the flavour profile.

  • 2000 Château Figeac 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 2. Opps, the nose showed even higher tones of eucalyptus and herbaceous note that framed the inner core of sweetness. This has very good integration and the tannin is so smooth and silky that seems absent from the wine? Long, sweet juicy finish with roasted herb dryness at the end.

Flight 11 (2 Notes)

Rather anonymous.

  • 2000 Château La Fleur de Boüard 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Bottle 1. The nose is austere, less expressive with mineral and some fruits hiding underneath. Structured, sweet, less acid and quite opulent, this is the style of the maker or the wine himself? This is actually quite good but seems pretty modern with the sweet fruits and a bit over-extracted bitter tannin that move on to the long bitter finish.

Rather anonymous too

  • 2000 Château Clinet 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Alcohol :: 13%
    Magnum. Very tight nose, but the aromas is focus with sweet tone over austerity that move on to the dark chocolate sweetness and bitterness with sweet mineral aftertaste. Very soft in texture and structured and I’m not sure if this was shut down and if it was not, this is pretty anonymous…… 86?
