Wildwood, Portland OR

LeatherPalate was the main architect on this and I just sorta tagged along. Since we were taking a trip out to portland, we wanted to celebrate the area's great contribution to the wine world. We wanted to see how well the wines can age and how they hold up. We had done something like this in chicago with less than stellar results last year and hoped for better results out in Portland
nose: hard to truly put into words how this nose operated and changed. While it fell apart after a while, it was clearly alive from the get go and yielded tender tones of red fruits, autumn leaves, roses, red currants, and bits of peppery tones. this was a moving target on the nose but lovely across in every single change that it had. While other 20+ year old OR pinots have fallen apart after 30-45 minutes, this held strong on the nose for about 90 minutes
taste: fully resolved on tannins along with medium acidity with a very pretty medium feel and silky tones of red fruits, dried berries, roses, and pepper tones all meld well together. This wasn't just alive on the palate either as there was some very good layering as well. The palate was quite alive and showing all it had
overall: The color on this was shocking as well. Normally I would expect a bricked through wine, but if one was just looking at the color, they would assume this to be a much younger wine. Gorgeous at every stage until it finally started to downslide, this was special to drink just on it's own. But, it was still a wine of note and one that was enjoyed for its beauty as well as its age

nose: pure and distinct nose of red fruits, perfume tones, berries, and spice tones. Well defined on the nose and in total harmony. This was subtle without being coy and showed itself well from the start
taste: lovely medium body with medium+ acidity and filled with life and nuanced tones of red fruits, berries, spice tones and a touch of floral tones. Well balanced and quite pretty on the palate with a more nuanced take
overall: This was very full of life. Perfumed and elegant on both the nose and palate, this was a real treat and sight to behold. This had some bricking, but a nice dark red core that belied its age

nose: gorgeously perfumed nose filled with layers of spices, red fruits, red cherries, and a whole lot of rose petals. Very well balanced with a lot of poise and elegance on the nose
taste: refined and demure medium body with medium+ acidity along with pretty tones of rose petals, spice tones, red fruits, red cherries and all sorts of red florals as well. Wonderful depth with the tones just gliding across the palate
overall: What a wonderful wine. This was everything that you want from an aged pinot noir with poise, balanced and all sorts of perfumed tones that just beguile you. This was a truly wonderful wine and one that really shows off what OR pinot can do with age. This bad boy didn't fade at all during the evening and held up well over the course of 3 hours

nose: extremely pretty and aromatic nose of red fruits, incense, red cherries, spice tones and a good amount of violets. Very classy and understated on the nose
taste: very refined and elegant medium body with medium+ acidity and beautifully balanced tones of red fruits, spice tones, red cherries and all sorts of violets and various floral tones
overall: yet another pretty wine that begged for your attention. Wonderfully balanced on both the nose and palate with a very feminine take to it that made it very attractive

nose: very robust nose that is a bit shocking at first with peppery tones, spices, dark red fruits, herbs and dark berry tones. Not as much depth or nuance as the 85, but certainly showing it's own weight
taste: fuller bodied and very acidic (the acidity was a bit overpowering and a bit disjointed) with some tannins as well providing tones of spices, dark red fruits, pepper, tobacco, and some bits of mushrooms. Nice depth, but doesn't posses the layering that others had
overall: this was a very interesting wine. I was shocked at how bold and rich it was even at this stage. Still, it showed some aged characteristics and held up well over the evening

nose; very nice nose of red fruits, berries, and bits of red cherries. Fairly perfumed on the nose from the get go
taste: very nice medium+ acidity with a very good medium feel and tones of red fruits, floral tones, berries and some bits of red cherries
overall: this bottle had been a big leaker. We weren't sure of it in the beginning, but this was a nice wine. Not sure if it was a fully representative wine because of the leaking

nose: pretty and perfumed nose of red fruits, cherries, red florals, along with perfume and incense tones. Rather demure and understated, but very lovely at the same time
taste: this is very alive on the palate with very good depth and polish with medium/high acidity and a silky medium feel and fresh tones of cherries, fresh picked berries, red fruits and loads of red florals
overall: this was a lot more dark than one would've expected. This certainly didn't seem like a 25+ year old wine at all and while it had some bricking, it wasn't too much. Another elegant and pretty pinot in a lineup filled with them

nose: this was a shock to the system on the nose after all of the 20-30 year old pinots. This came off as a complete baby compared to them with intense tones of dark red cherries, spice tones and bits of black licorice
taste: full bodied with medium acidity and rich tones of dark red cherries, spice tones, licorice, berries and a bit of herb tones. Well balanced with nice plushness, but still large scaled a bit
overall: This was a complete changeup from what we had been having. I wonder if it's the shock to the palate or the wine, but it was large scaled and a bit chunky as well. It was also lacking some of the depth that other wines had

nose: a rather dark and almost brooding nose of dark berries, dark red cherries, spice tones, herbs and perfume tones. Not necessarily expressive and pretty robust at this time
taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity along with still chewy tannins and robust tones of herbs, dark red cherries, dark red berries, and spice tones
overall: this came off as still very young. I would love to see where this goes in another 5 years as it seems like it's a long haul wine.

nose: sexy and polished nose that took a bit to unravel, but emerged with beautiful tones of red fruits, roses, violets, red cherries and a bunch of fresh picked berries
taste: plush medium/full body with medium+ acidity and silky tones of red fruits, roses, red cherries and fresh picked berries. Very well layered and regal on the palate
overall: I really wish I had more time with this. This was everything I wanted and then some. This just kept getting better and better with more air and was my personal wotn

nose: feminine and lovely nose of roses, wild flowers, spice tones, red cherries, and a good dose of red fruits. This is very well balanced and draws you in nicely
taste: well balanced medium feel with medium+ acidity that is still noticeable along with demure and polished tones of roses, spices, red cherries, dark berries, herbs and red fruits. Complex on the palate, but not fully in harmony just yet
overall: this could still use a few more years to fully show off what it has to offer. Both the nose and palate are complex, but its lacking some of the layering that the 94 brought. This is definitely a wine to watch though as it seems to be a marathon runner

nose: this was definitely the youngest. while that is obvious, it certainly seemed pretty young on the nose at first with tones of dark red cherries, dark berries, herbs and some earth tones
taste: fuller bodied with medium+ acidity and some noticeable tannins. Youngish and vibrant tones of smoke, earth, dark red cherries, dark berries and spice tones balance well together.
overall: This is still rough around the edges a slight bit right now. This wasn't decanted as long as it probably should have, but even with air it still would've acted like a baby. Like the 98, this will be fun to track down the road as it rounds more into form

nose: gorgeous and flowing nose that fills up the glass with fresh tones of violets, roses, red fruits, red currants and all sorts of fresh picked berries
taste: fuller bodied and quite youthful on the palate with medium+ acidity and balanced tones of roses, red fruits, red cherries and a lot of fresh picked berries
overall: This performed quite well yet again. And, like last time, it seemed to be much younger than it truly is. Well balanced with good depth on both the nose and palate, this seems like it's just getting going and has a long life ahead of it

I was having problems with this bottle. The nose was very nice with red fruits, cherries and spice tones. But the palate for me was mostly out of whack acid. Granted, it took me a bit to get to this bottle as I was behind others in drinking

nose: very fragrant and elegant nose of red fruits, spice tones, roses and bits of red berries. Well balanced and perfumed tones that fill up the glass
taste: precocious medium body with high acidity and pretty tones of red fruits, roses, raspberries, red berries and bits of red floral tones as well. Very well balanced and very elegant at the same time
overall: the acidity was a bit bothersome on the palate, but the nose was gorgeous. Very well balanced and perfumed on the nose with more of a deft touch on the palate

And it was better results we certainly got. On the whole the wines were tremendous and showed how well they can age. It was shocking to see how well the 79 Elk Cove held up considering that they hadn't put together that many vintages at that point. On top of all of the great wines was the company. It really made for a great evening and has certainly made me excited to come back out at some point in the near future

NV René-Henri Coutier Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 91 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
nose: nice and fat nose filled with tones of rose petals, red berries, cherries and a good dose of mineral tones as well. Very good depth with a real crispness to the nose as well
taste: beautifully balanced medium/full feel with medium acidity that is more refreshing than it is intrusive. Plush and succulent tones of roses, red berries and tones of cherries round out the palate
overall: This was listed as L03.07. Both of the bottles were 750s and certainly showed some of the age on them with the plushness on both the nose and palate. a delicious NV rose that has a real sexy side to it that is enjoyable
