Introduction

It goes like this, everybody brings a wine to a certain topic, and we have a blind tasting of all of the wines in a random order. The wines are then rated and the loser will be next times host and can chose the topic.

This time the topic was Bordeaux

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Pavie 89 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Chocolate powder, Warm nose, leather, forest wood some orange zest a bit rough on the edges but very good in general.

  • 1999 La Mondotte 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion

Overall this was the loser of the tasting, what a surprise! Mature on the nose with a creamy milk chocolate texture but slightly drying out.

  • 1998 Château Pape Clément 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

My wine of the night. This wine is great, smells like a Hermes saddle, black tea, round and warm in the palate, different berries. Great stuff, I even rated it higher than the 2003!

  • 1981 Château Haut-Brion 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Very light, nice sweetness with some caramel, reminded me a bit of chevre. very elegant but clearly over it's peak.

  • 2004 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Somewhat of a fresh nose, cherry, yogurt, tons of tannin, a bit drying out, which is a bit of a risk with respect to long term aging. I liked it but wouldn't bet on another 20 years.

  • 2004 Château Angélus 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Initially I rated this only 90+ but after some air this opened up really nicely. tons of cherry, so young and so much potential. Good stuff!

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Nairac 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

This stuff is so awesome. Don't expect a classic sauternes and hence don't try to match it up with foie-gras. This is so fat and rich, just incredible. Apricot, peach, melons, straciatella gelato and porcini mushrooms. Awesome awesome awesome!!!!
I guess this is the best Sauternes I ever had!
