Introduction

The focus of the evening was on tasting some of the better examples of the 1982 Bordeaux vintage, with additional Bordeaux vs. California comparisons, ending with a delicious rarity. The 1982 and 1989 Bordeaux was paired with various charcuterie and cheeses, the 2001s were paired with a braised short rib and the 1996 Beaucastel Roussanne was paired with a pumpkin cheesecake.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Gruaud Larose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Exceptional looking bottle, with a fill in to the neck. Cork came out easily in one piece and was stained about half way. Decanted only for sediment. Garnet in colour with some bricking. A powerful nose showing strong notes of barnyard upon opening, giving way to leather, cigar, earth, wet leaves, truffle and dark fruits. The palate was still showing quite a bit of dark fruits, herbs and spice. There was a touch of ash on the finish, and something missing to vault this to a more exceptional score. I would like to revisit this bottle within the next few years to see if I have better luck, as this may not have been a representative sample.

  • 1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Bottle in excellent condition, with a fill level in to the neck. Cork was removed easily in one piece with staining only a half inch up the cork. Decanted only for sediment and served immediately. My first thought was incredibly youthful. Dark purple in colour with a slight bricking at the rim of the glass. This was much more primary than the Gruaud Larose that preceded it. A little tight on the nose at first, but opened up quickly, showing notes of graphite, cassis, leather, blackberries, tobacco, with hints of stone, truffle and earth. Over time, a slight floral note emerged as well. The palate offered dark fruits, spice, with a touch of earthiness. Incredibly full bodied, with some lingering tannin, but showing wonderful balance and excellent mouth feel. I would guess this has many good years ahead of it.

  • 1982 Château Lynch-Bages 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Another exceptional looking bottle with a fill level in to the neck. Decanted for sediment and served immediately. Dark purple in colour, with some bricking. Note quite as youthful as the Ducru Beaucaillou that preceded it, but still in wonderful shape. The nose showed incredible purity, giving way to notes of coffee, cedar, cigar, earth, currants, dark fruits, herbs and spice. The palate offered tastes of dark red fruits, spice and earthiness, with a slight saline taste. Fully resolved tannin, with an excellent, long savory finish that coats the mouth.

  • 1982 Château Cos d'Estournel 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

With a stroke of luck, these bottles sourced from auction continued to deliver. Fill level was in to the neck, and the cork was heavily stained, but easily removed. Decanted only for sediment. Dark purple in colour, with a slight bricking at the rim of the glass. Much like the Ducru Beaucaillou, this was showing an incredible, youthful vibrancy. Beautiful nose of chocolate, cedar, coffee, truffles, leaves, cigar, black cherry and blackberries. The palate offered up incredibly dark fruits, earthiness and an exceptional finish that lingered in the mouth. There was nice acidity on this, showing impeccable balance. Magnificent.

  • 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The last of the 1982s for this evening. This bottle was a surprise brought by one of the other tasters. As with the others, this bottle was sourced from auction and had a very top shoulder fill. The cork came out in one piece, showing some heavy stain well up the cork. Decanted only for sediment. Dark purple in the glass, with no signs of fading. At first, the nose was a little restrained, however, with some persuasion, it opened up beautifully. After a few minutes, this was screaming out of the glass. Incredible complexity in the nose, showing notes of pencil shavings, blackberries, cigar, chocolate, mocha, caramelized sugar, butterscotch and a bit of a green streak, represented by a mint and eucalyptus note. I could have happily kept my face in the glass for the remainder of the evening, however, I lacked the discipline to save any in my glass. On the palate, this was incredibly opulent, with a long, smooth finish. Wonderful balance, and still showing some tannin. This should have many more good years ahead.

  • 1989 Château La Lagune 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Originally slated to be a 1982, a mix up led to a switch to the 1989. As with the other bottles, exceptional condition. An oddly long cork caused a bit of difficulty in removal, but eventually we were successful at removing it in one piece. My skepticism grew as the cork was heavily saturated. Decanted for sediment only, this poured as a beautiful dark purple. At first, the nose offered up notes of dusty black cherries, a touch of barnyard, tobacco, leather, truffle, soil and leaves. The palate was savoury dark fruits, herbs and spices, with a nice crisp acidity, that made for a very pleasant drink. Overall, the surprise of the night.

  • 2001 Dominus Estate 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted for sediment and served along side a 2001 Leoville Poyferre. Dark purple in colour, obviously showing it's youth. A nice change from the older Bordeaux preceding this duo. My initial impression was that this isn't really open for business. Incredibly muted nose, especially next to the Leoville Poyferre. I let this sit for about an hour or two, and it still never went where I wanted it to go. The nose eventually gave way to a bit of oak, black cherry, spice and tobacco. The palate was very elegant, with excellent balance. Still some tannin lingering that will soften up in the coming years. I still have one bottle remaining, and would love to see where this goes. Will check back in 5 years. Rated as 93+, as there is potential for improvement with time.

  • 2001 Château Léoville Poyferré 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Decanted only for sediment, consumed along side 2001 Dominus for comparative purposes. Extremely dark purple in the glass, with no signs of aging. At 10 years, this is still incredibly youthful and just starting to develop those secondary tertiary aromas. The nose was bursting from glass, especially compared to the restrained showing of the 2001 Dominus that was consumed along side the Leoville Poyferre. Notes of pungent barnyard, blackberries, black cherries, humidor, earth and a hint of dark roasted coffee exuded from the glass. The palate was incredibly dark, concentrated and savoury. Tannins not yet fully resolved, which provided for a nice bite on the finish. Exceptional wine, especially considering the price. At $75 USD a bottle, you will be hard pressed to find a better value for a 10 year old Bordeaux. Back up the truck and grab a case!

  • 1994 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

When removing the cork, this one broke in half. Based on recent notes, and experiences of tasters at the table, I was expecting this one to be gone or cooked, but it still showed moderately well for what it is. Not overly complex, showing notes of sweet red fruits, caramel, tobacco leaf and some nice smokiness. The palate was also sweet red fruits, and some pleasant acidity. Better than anticipated, but likely better a few years back.

  • 1996 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This one was served blind, brought by one of the fellow tasters. There was certainly a dichotomy amongst the opinions at the table; some adamantly suggesting old world, and others thinking new world. Incredibly fragrant and lucious nose, showing dark fruits, leather, earth, mint and cigar. The palate followed suit, with black currants and mint, showing off it's plush mouth feel, that in the end, was it's give away. One of the tasters guessed the exact producer, bottling and vintage, which was quite impressive. Not spitting at this event, I was mildly intoxicated, and my notes read "Parker, are you retarded?". My apologies to those afflicted by mental disabilities. A poor choice of words, by a drunkard. Overall, exceptional wine, which can be had for a song, even in the Great White North.

  • 1996 Château de Beaucastel Roussanne Vieilles Vignes Vendanges Tardives 95 Points

    France, Vin de Table Français

An exceptionally rare bottle, that does not typically see distribution anywhere in the world. This was put up for sale by LCBO Vintages, following a Beaucastel tasting event where most of the 36 bottles that made it outside the Chateau were consumed. Beautiful amber colour in the glass. Notes of orange rind, honeycomb and spice. Viscous texture, with a pleasant level of sweetness on the palate, and balancing acidity.
