  • 1998 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 92 Points

    France, Champagne

nose: fresh and mineral based nose of citrus tones, white fruits, pears, some bits of almonds, apples and some warm bread tones. Excellent depth, but a bit tight as well and not too forthcoming

overall: In need of time or a decant right now. Well balanced with class and good depth on both the nose and palate. The tones are a bit rough right now and don't seem to be giving their all, but it there looks to be a real lovely bubbly that is waiting to get out

Flight 2 - Newton wines (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Newton Chardonnay 87 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma

nose: nice nose of pears, tropical fruits, green apples and some bits of warm butter. Standard and straight forward nose

taste: full bodied with a good amount of butter and tones of pears, tropical citrus', and tones of green apples. Lower acidity and the butter is fairly noticeable

overall: while the butter is noticeable and comes close to being too much, it toes the line and works. Full bodied this is definitely on the big side of chardonnays

  • 2007 Newton Chardonnay Unfiltered 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Napa County

nose: very big and rich nose with tones of butter, mangoes, marmalade, white fruits and some oak tones as well. There is no mistaking this for anything else as it certainly brings its fair share of butter on the nose

taste: full bodied and big with rich tones of butter, marmalade, white fruits and some oak tones. There isn't any real noticeable acidity. While the tones are very big and rich, they aren't overdone and there is a creaminess to the feel as well

overall: Not even close to a bashful chard. This holds the style pretty well though and isn't all that oaky on either the nose or palate

  • 2005 Newton The Puzzle 91 Points

nose: rich and dark nose of anise, dark red fruits, black currants, black cherries, herbs and oak tones

taste: plush and balanced full bodied feel with good tones of anise, dark red fruits, black cherries and oak tones. The tannins are pretty chewy right now and are showing off the wine's youth

overall: This is a really good young wine. This needs a couple of years to fully show itself though it should turn into a real good cab

  • 2007 Bodega Numanthia Toro Numanthia 91 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Toro

nose: powerful and tight nose of smoke, cedar, black fruits, black cherries, dark berries and spice tones. Very much on the dark side of the spectrum, but not brooding

taste: full bodied with a suaveness to the feel, but also possessing big and chewy tannins. Balanced with rich tones of cedar, black cherries, black fruits, dark berries and some bits of spices

overall: a bruiser of a wine right now and in need of a lot of rest. This has some good potential, but it needs some of the power to calm down

  • 2006 Bodega Numanthia Toro Termanthia 93 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Toro

nose: very rich and extracted with big tones of dark berries, anise, black and red currants, black berries, and black fruits. This is a big nose and has a lot of depth on it as well

taste: full bodied and rich with big and chewy tannins. Doesn't come off as extracted on the palate and has forward tones of dark berries, anise, black currants, black berries and some bits of black fruits

overall: It's hard to say what it's aging curve is. There is a lot of fruit on this and is in big and forward camp. That said, this could probably use another few years to settle down

taste: refined and elegant medium body with medium acidity and pretty tones of cedar, red fruits, herbs, red currants, red cherries and some red florals. Very expressive with real good depth as well. The tannins are still very much showing themselves

overall: This is a gorgeous wine now but it feels like it can get better. The tannins are still showing themselves, but this really does show off what can be a special wine

  • 1995 Château d'Yquem 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

nose: deep and layered nose of honey, nectarines, pears, peaches and bits of sweet apricots and floral tones. While this is a bit tight, it's showing off a lot of class

taste: smooth and polished medium body with medium+ acidity and layered tones of honey, nectarines, pears, peaches and some apricot tones. This has a lot of depth with a more rounded feel to the tones

overall: this is on the near side of it's window. Some more age could really round it out and deepen it. It just seems like it needs to still shed some baby fat, but it is a gorgeous wine right now

  • 2006 Casa Lapostolle Merlot Cuvée Alexandre 86 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

nose: solid and balanced nose of cedar, spices, dark red fruits and berry tones. Good tones, but lacking any real depth

taste: medium bodied with smooth tones of cedar, spices, dark red cherries and dark red fruits. There is also a touch of heat on the finish

overall: the heat is annoying. This is a solid merlot. Straightforward but without all that much depth to it on either the nose or palate

  • 2007 Casa Lapostolle Carménère Cuvée Alexandre Apalta Vineyard 90 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

nose: pungent and aromatic nose of dark red fruits, berry tones, cedar, red and black currants, loam, and some bits of florals. Very attractive with open aromatics. It is lacking a bit in depth, but is very balanced

taste: medium/full bodied with medium acidity and some chewy tannins. The tannins are a bit on the rough side and very noticeable. Well balanced with very good tones of dark red fruits, berries, loam, cedar and some black currants

overall: this could certainly use some more age on it. There is a lot to like from this and it should develop with a couple of years

  • 2007 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 92 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

nose: tight, but pungent with very good depth and tones of spices, anise, loam, some bits of asphalt, black currants, dark red cherries and dark red fruits. On the riper side but the asphalt tones aren't too pronounced

taste: very silky and elegant with some very chewy tannins. Backed up by plush tones of spices, anise, black currants, dark red cherries and dark red fruits

overall: definitely in need of some age, but a real elegant wine in the making. The polish is there right now and it just needs to let everything show through. Not as ripe on the palate and a bit more dialed back as well

Flight 6 - Monsanto (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 89 Points

  • 2003 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

nose: dark and somewhat brooding with tones of roasted herbs, anise, black currants, dark red cherries and a touch of perfume tones as well

taste: medium/full bodied with hard tannins and medium acidity along with tones of roasted herbs, anise, black currants, dark red cherries and a touch of purple florals

overall: certainly shows the heat of the vintage. The tannins are on the hard side, so it's hard to tell how they will resolve with time. This could use a couple of years to smooth out a bit

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2001 Castello di Monsanto Nemo Mulino Toscana IGT 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

nose: very savory nose with very good depth and tones of roasted herbs, cedar, dark red cherries, root vegetables, some red florals and a touch of red currants

taste: elegant with a real silky medium/full feel and medium+ acidity that is noticeable. The tannins are a bit coarse and showing off youth along with plush tones of cedar, roasted herbs, dark red cherries, red florals and red currants

overall: This was at a bigger tasting, so it's hard to fully tell if it more needs decanting or age. I think it can be approached with a good decant, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to give this more time
