Introduction

Another nice tasting event at Handford wines ( http://www.handford.net ) presented by Richard Brazier of Ancient & Modern Wines ( http://www.ancientandmodernwines.co.uk)
All wines were decanted for about one hour and fifteen minutes.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark red in colour, youthfull. The nose jumps our of the glass. Classic, cedary, red fruit, no oak. Tannins are evident but approachable now but the palate comes nowhere close to the beauty of the nose at this stage. Good fruit, good length and complexity . Maybe a few unbalanced notes at this stage. You cna start to drink from now and prob will peak in 5yrs or so. Another beautiful 2001. 92/92+

  • 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark youthfull red colour as expected from a 2000. Nose (not as open as the 2001 that we tried before this) cedary, smoky with some sweet fruit elements. Very elegant, not overdone. Still restarined but feels so structured and well made, classic wine. Deep, lots of fruit and with lots of length. A lovely sweet core too. This is among the most fwd 2000s and justifies the hype behind it. 94+ for the moment but given at the moment this is holding back we can only but imagine how lovely it will be in the future. Lots of life in this.Could well follow a similar path to the 1990.

  • 1996 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Earthy, herby on the nose.Very classic secondary nose. Fruit is on the way out and its longevity is a bit to question at this stage. Lacks a bit of concentration. Wnjoyable though at the moment and we would suggest one starts to drink up. 91

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark core, dense.Full of fruit nose very 1990, dark and dense.Evolves however in the glass into a more floral nose as time goes by. Lots of extract on the palate too, some jammie fruit but balanced. To us a very typical 1990. We must say we didnt really love it to start but as the tastign went it came back on us. Decant pls. 92 and drinks nicely now . (a good glimpse into how the 2000 will evolve)

  • 1989 Château Léoville Poyferré 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Third time we came across this over the last year or so and probably the worst showing we have seen. Maybe a bad bottle? Maybe the decanting (1.5 hrs) took it away?
Very little on the nose almost totally gone. On the palate its a lot better with some vibrancy but has a lean/unbalanced feel to it. Shame on the nose too. 87 this time

  • 1988 Château Léoville Poyferré 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

A very good 88 and unlike other 88s this has fruit to it.
Colour is showing its age. A bit floral, herby with some cedary nose. Elegant nose that grows on you.old school bordeaux, reserved on the palate yet elegant. Some dryness to it and maybe a feww harsh elements but still nice and would definitely be a lot better with food. 89/90

  • 1983 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Surprisingly alive. Spicy peppery nose and we would never guess its an 83. Some dryness and although not the best LP still has structure, good finish and feels vibrant and alive. Very eenjoyable and we would love to have this over the 82, adjusted for price that is. 90-92.

  • 1982 Château Léoville Poyferré 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Dark red core but with brickign on the rim. Classic bdx nose, cedar, fruit, earth. Very delicate yet opened, with lots of finesse. Very well made and a testament to the vintage. Concentrated, alive, some sweet elements on the palate. Very elegant, classical, beautiful but in no way mesmerising. Still will not dissapoint. 93+

Very light in colour. Brownish rim. Chocholate/coffee notes to start then more green grassy herby notes dominate.Interesting wine though and although not a great wine still will not dissapoint 85-88.

A great tasting as always. Chilled atmosphere, people express their views and Richard is a very good and full of knowledge presenter. A with a humor out of a classic english novel :-)!
Not bowled over by LP. Especially following the Gruaud Larosse masterclass a month which showed so well.
Definitely post 2000 the quality is gone through the roof. WOTN ? 2000 for Andreas 2001 for Nicol. 2000 for the group.
