Introduction

Really nice range of red wine properties, vintages, and styles framed by 2 whites. Great tasting with some wines that excited even this Bordeaux atheist.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2000 Lur-Saluces "Y"

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

Pineapple aromas. Off dry. Moderately viscous with good acidity and surprising amount of soil on the finish. No sign of oxidation. Seems like it must be predominantly Semillon given the feel and sort of neutral flavors. Good but betwixt and between-clearly neither a dry white Graves prototype nor a dessert wine.

  • 2008 Château Palmer

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Moderately deep. Already quite aromatic with the strong scent of black olives. Stern first impression, but medium weight and a more supple, chocolate quality quickly breaks through so in the end, it has a nice, almost lush feel with tannins that are present but not intrusive. All of the elements seem present for a long evolution. Far superior to the 2007 tasted after it.

  • 2007 Château Palmer

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Lighter color than the '08. Immediately more herbal profile. Less dense than the younger wine, much leaner and greener, once again with an olive tone that in this vintage speaks of underripeness. Much less harmonious and complete than its counterpart, for earlier consumption, and clearly a step down in quality bordering on average. This in no way justifies the price.

  • 2005 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Moderately deep color. Shy cassis nose. Medium to lighter weight but great intensity in the mouth due to great acidity accompanying the lean, black fruit. Strong back end tannins attest to the need for long aging-this was probably the most backward wine tasted. Classic and elegant if lacking the depth for greatness. Much more positive impression than when tasted 3 years ago.

  • 2001 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Medium center, early tawniness at the rim. The first of these wines to have some secondary perfume and the first to reveal any sweetness of fruit. Supple, subtle, and cedary. Already beginning to develop silkiness, but a strong cassis laden finish suggests that it is not yet at peak and still has a long way to go. One of the most seductive wines in the line up, right up there with the 1990 Pichon Baron. I really fell in love with this.

  • 2002 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Medium ruby with some lightening. Some funk-perhaps some bret? Chunky, simple, round. Overall, blockish and no charm. This really suffered in comparison to the more ethereal Leovillle Poyferre which came before it.

  • 2000 Vieux Château Certan

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Medium color with fading at the rim. Some early secondary perfume, spice and caramel notes. Light weight. Excellent acidity and dry tannins give a pretty grippy, short finish at present. The fruit is in the background and any sense of ripeness is cut off by the substantial structure. I'm willing to believe that this was just tasted at a very closed stage and could be much better than it showed today. Not a wine currently saying "Come hither", that's for sure.

  • 1996 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Deep core with some browning. Musty at first, but this is sound. Big, dense wine with an almost syrupy entry. Great ripe fruit without any artificial sweetness and an appealing mintiness for complexity. It is given shape by a long, dry finish. What this lacked in finesse compared to the younger Poyferre, it makes up for in material and power. One gets the sense that it needs every bit of 20 more years to develop complexity and fully express itself. After that, it probably has enough stuffing to be fantastic for another 20-30 years. A bruiser with tremendous potential.

  • 1995 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Lighter and much more mature looking than the Leoville Barton. All cedar on the nose. Lighter weight that seems dilute after the volume of what came before it. Lively, appealing entry but then lacking punch in the mouth. Short finish. One of the least impressive reds today.

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Medium red to tawny edge. Gorgeous aromatics-cassis fruit, scorched earth and secondary high toned perfume. Absolutely lovely, poised, balanced feel with completely convincing gentle sweetness of fruit and some green olive. Great length. Elegant, classic Pauillac, quite velvety. Along with the '01 Poyferre, one of my top 2 wines.

  • 1982 Château Palmer

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Light and completely resolved. Faint floral perfume. Light, good remaining acidity. Faded fruit and flavors, thin feel, curious artificial sweetness sticks out right in the middle, medium to short finish. I must say that this is pretty bland and uninspiring for a great property from a heralded year. Not nearly in the same class as the best wines in the flight.

  • 1966 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Pale with orange border. Not entirely clean nose with a touch of bret and some VA, but interesting citrus as well. Light body with some spiky acidity and dry tannins still present. Neither completely ameliorated nor entirely harmonious, it's certainly not great, but still quite alive and interesting (much more so than the '82 Palmer). Good finish, which may be its best attribute now.

  • 2007 Château de Fargues

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium yellow. Coconut, grilled nuts and apricot. Not especially honeyed. Viscous with a good dose of wood. Nice acidity. Excellent young Sauternes.
