Introduction

My first guided tasting in MKE and this was a very enjoyable and educational one. While I have attended many champagne tasting before this is probably one of the better ones as it showcases the types of champagne house and style.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

This was suppose to show the types of Champagne favoriting the Chardonnay style even thought some of it had even blend. My favorite Dom.

  • NV Delamotte Champagne Brut

    France, Champagne

From the sister company of Salon, made from 50% Chardonnay,30% Pinot, 20% Meunier. Light dosage with about 30 to 36 months on the lees and aged in stainless steel. All over as compared to the Dom with hints of citrus and good lively acid.

  • 2000 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points

    France, Champagne

50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot, 84 months on the lees with no oak. Focus and intense nose with yeasty high notes. Like scotched oak and brown sugar. Mineral like wet granite. Long long finish with precision on the palate.

  • 1998 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé 90 Points

    France, Champagne

From the person who brought fame to VC. 49% Chardonnay & Pinot 51%, 96 months on the lees. Lighter notes compared with Dom with sweet, creamy, slightly flowery. Good mouth fill finish appears to dropped off suddenly with a rough bitterness after taste.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

This flights is meant to show Pinot style champagne and my favorite is Bollinger.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée 91 Points

    France, Champagne

50% Pinot, 35% Chardonnay, 15% Meunier with over 96 months on the lees. A 10 year blend with a focus on freshness. Big toasty slightly mineral notes and lacks the focus and intensity of the Dom. A clean and fresh palate.

  • NV Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Also known as Baby Krug but I struggle to find the similiarities. 70% Pinot remaining Chardonnay from Premier Cru of Rilly la Montagne. From a blend of 50% 24 months, 25% 36 months, 25% 48 months on the lees. Yeasty and breast on the nose. Palate is slightly creamy with liquorice notes slightly fabby.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

Mainly showing grower champagne. My favorite Selosse of course.

  • NV Ruinart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

100% Char with 36 to 48 months on lees. I remembered drinking this at one of the Wines for Asia events and was impressed by it. Guess this time with all the major houses it did not stand out. Sulphur on the initial sniff which blows away. Sweet on the entry good mouth fill and frizz but seemly lacks finish.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 96 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

100% Char with 100% new oak. 36 to 60 months on the lees. Perfumed nose that keeps evolving floral focus, bready and rich. Palate equally floral and sweet. Finish goes on and on. Impressive. Not the typical Champagne but something I enjoy. Probably third time I have had this but the most enjoyable so far.

Closing

My favorite of the night was a toss between Bollinger and Selosse. If I had to choose I would choose the Selosse because of the value and enjoyment it gives.
