Introduction

Casual tasting with Roel and David.
All wines served single blind

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1988 Château de Fieuzal Blanc 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Bouquet showed an inviting, ripe and generous mixture of oak, vanilla, yellow flowers, coconut, applepie and banana. Slightly dusty entrance marked by evolving acidity and a tiny hole in the midpalate. Otherwise this wine has beautiful floral and vegetal aromatics combined with freshness and elegance. The finish ends with nice and zesty bitters. Drink up. 17/20

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 1978 Château Léoville Las Cases 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Rubyred. On opening it showed a little mushroom-ey, but this blowes off quickly. Very modest bouquet of ash, charcoal, tealeaf, old books, red-currant and apple syrup. On the palate this is open and fresh as a daisy. Pronounced acidity, all tannines resolved. Very traditional and friendly. Earthy beetroot-notes and red-currant sweetness give depth and interest to this tertiairy, mature and pretty wine. 16,5/20

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Clear nose of red fruit jumps out of the glass. Also spicy notes like cinnamon and cloves. Coffee, cigarbox. Complete, mature and balanced. Good length. Clean, good focus, no rough edges. Cool wine, if a little neat and affable. A point. 17/20

  • 2000 Château Gloria 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very pleasant bouquet, decent complexity which resurfaces on the palate. Licorice, ceder, black cherry, cassis, cough drops, grilled peppers, tapenade, tobacco. There was a piquant tingle on the tongue, which I couldn't figure out. Acidity? Alcohol? Primary fruit aromas? Dunno.
All in all, this wine is not built to impress, rather to please and draw your attention by its purity. Found the nose to be more interesing and complex when compared with the palate. 17/20

  • 2001 Château Gloria 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This exponent of more modern wine making showed some volatility and alcohol on its slightly prickly nose. Also some glue/cardboard in the back, gingerbread, candied cherries, cocoa, espresso. On the palate good freshness and clarity, though. At the moment, this shows young, serious, maybe a tad surly even, and the structure is a little 'loose'. Not the best moment to taste this wine, but plenty of future, me thinks. 17+/20

  • 1999 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Soft and timid mature nose, showing some cabbage/cooked veggies. Slender, slightly rustic and classically structured, with fading fruit. It does have loads of smoky ceder and tobacco, leather, cola etc. Nevertheless, it makes a vivid and refreshing impression in the mouth. Drink up. 16.5/20

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This package is very complete. Beautifully ripe, with a nice jagged edge. Typicity, concentration and length are also quite exemplary. Very drinkable too, not to heavy. There's a lot of cherries and prunes, good oak-integration, interesting herbaceousness. Pure, clear and great to drink now or in 5 or even 10 years. 18/20

  • 2002 Château Gruaud Larose 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Basket full of fresh fruit: blackberries, cherries and redcurrant. But also interesting tropical notes (mango, banana), leather, tobacco and decent minerality. The wine still has some youthful astringency, but all together this is quite open, elegant and drinking fine now. 17/20

  • 1995 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Top! Smoke, earth, caramel, lots of fruit, bayleaf, licorice, some animality. Distinguished, typical, good definition, long and concentrated.
The structure has softened throughout the years and is getting silkier, though tannines still provide an adquate foundation. Loved it. 18,5/20
