  • 1988 Gosset Champagne Célebris 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Rather mature aromas. More advanced flavors than fresh fruit, but still lots of good textures and acidity helping from middle through finish.

  • 2008 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Floral and minty aromas to start. Big burly apple and pear flavors come through on the palate with a fair hint of new oak. This needs a couple of years to integrate, but is very substantial with lots of acid and great textures.

  • 2005 Y de Yquem 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Lush aromas of tropical fruit, followed by candied apple and orange peel flavors on palate, along with some tropical fruit. Lots of power and lush textures. Drinking well already now, but seemingly short on acidity.

Corked. Two flawed bottles in a row.

  • 1999 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Floral and minty aromas to start with ripe peach as well. Same lush fruit comes through on palate with hints of lemon and lemon peel coming through on finish with lots of acidity. Great textures and energy through long finish. Kept getting better and better over the course of 4 hours open.

  • 2001 Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

After our great success with Boillot's 2001 Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet the other night, Paul brought this bottle which showed far more advanced. Big, fat fruit that was still powerful and spicy, but without the freshness or spice it should still be showing.

  • 2000 Denis Mugneret Père et Fils Clos Vougeot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

From jeroboam. Aromas of moderate red fruit and lots of earth. Even more earthy on the palate, with moderate spice hints and medium weight and density, not particularly at a Grand Cru level for me. Probably exiting its peak drinking window.

  • 1985 Vieux Château Certan 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Aromas are all earthy, with tobacco and leather, overall somewhat more advanced than many other 1985s, but still charming. Same mushroom and earthy flavors, but somewhat short and drying on finish. Drink up.

  • 1971 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Baking spice on nose with freshly foraged mushrooms. Still vibrant flavors also show good spice and black truffle. Interesting sweetness emerged when open 10-15 minutes, this wine was improving to that point, then held up well for almost an hour before shortening and getting simpler. Impressive for its level and age.

  • 1988 Domaine Jean Gros Richebourg 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Impressive Asian spice aromas galore dominate the nose. Palate balanced some reasonably fresh red fruit with earthy flavors, everything is well balanced through the wine's moderate length. Everything is very good, I just remember another bottle several years back that had more nuance. This was just a tasting pour so I wasn't able to revisit this repeatedly over several hours, but this was getting better with more time in glass.

  • 1979 Pierre Bourée Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 76 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Started with some good aromas of mature fruit, but quickly faded and just showed a tart character and earthy character that wasn't particularly pristine.

  • 1966 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Fresh, inviting aromas show mint, black fruit and cooked mushroom. Charming and elegant flavors also balance earthy elements with good remaining fruit. Very enjoyble.

  • 1966 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 90 Points

Aromas are mostly mature and earthy with some black cherry and currant in background. Big structured and full bodied on palate. Still nicely tannic, with long and powerful finish.

  • 1985 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 89 Points

Black fruit on both nose and paalte with just moderate spice. Not particularly a long finish. Overall showing far more advanced than another bottle from a few months ago.

  • 2004 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

From magnum. Despite being a Dujac fan in almost every vintage, I've rarely found great pleasure from the 2004s. Green elements are prominent on both the nose and palate. Red fruit also shows some good spice, but not particularly well balanced.

  • 1993 Dominique Laurent Grands-Echezeaux 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Good red fruit with some earthy character. Somewhat advanced for a 1993. Not much spice or texture to support the fruit, making this very simple in every way. Good wine, but not showing Grand Cru character.

  • 2001 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

All acid with a sense of stripped fruit makes me think this was corked.

  • 1974 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Vibrant black fruit aromas. Good fruit density still prominent on palate with maturity just starting to emerge. Tannins help with the wine's length and power. Slightly drying on finish.

  • 1989 Château Margaux 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

I haven't had this wine in 4 years and it seems less mature and more backward now than back then. Big, dense black fruit with lots of licorice, cloves and other spice. Massive and chewy, this still needs lots of cellar time and/or decanter time. Powerful from start to finish.

  • 1974 Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 85 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Entirely earthy, no longer even hinting at fruit or spice. Well past its prime, but others liked this more than I did today.

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Corton-Grèves 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Red fruit on nose and palate with a few emerging earthy elements and some dried herbs in the background. Incredibly accessible for such a young Corton, this is another well made 2000 drinking well today.

  • 2001 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tropical fruit aromas with faint spice. Lots of oak. Fruit on palate is starting to fade, giving a slightly flabby character.

  • 2001 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Massive black cherry and boysenberry aromas with black pepper, anise and nutmeg. Same fruit and spice continues onto the palate with great textures and concentration. There is plenty of structure, with the the acidity and tannins working well with the fruit. Impressive power and length.

  • 1967 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Speciale Asili 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Floral nose showing rose and summer flowers along with leather, truffle, tobacco and licorice. Palate is red fruit also with leather, along with tightly wound acidity and lots of energy, a bit of sweetness on finish. Lean and tightly coiled through moderately long finish.

  • 1990 Château Montrose 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Aromas of leather, tobacco complement black cherry and currant in an very meaty, gamy combination that shows a bit of Brett. Powerful, dense black fruit on the palate with raw, intense spice. Great length. Still a baby.

  • 1989 Château Haut-Brion 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Ripe black cherry, black currant, cassis, cigar box, cocoa, leather all combine beautifully on the nose. Same back fruit on palate with early stages of earthy character that shows a hint of black truffle and dark chocolate. Incredible balance, incredible length. I haven't had this wine in several years, but this tasting reinforces my thinking that it's near the pinnacle of the greatest Bordeaux made in the past few decades.

  • 2000 Sine Qua Non Syrah In Flagrante 94 Points

Starts with a bit of mostly good barnyard on the nose. Black fruit flavors with dark chocolate, licorice and dried herbs. Lots of power supported and lengthened by good acidity. Really good balance for its size and alcohol.
