Introduction

Tim and Nancy, Brett and Carol and Ann and I met for dinner at the Twelves with a Pinot theme. The wines were all very good but my favorites were the Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast, Willams Selyem Eastside Rd Neighbors and the V. Sattui.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2005 Maurice Écard Bourgogne Les Perrières

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

This was the only pinot we decanted. As expected, very different in style to the CA pinots. This showed lighter in body and concentration with some earthy notes. Spicey, tart red fruits, very dry. I liked the earthy notes. This opened up as the night went on and paired well with my roasted chicken.

  • 2009 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Popped and poured. Pretty, delicate but full nose. Smells nice. Red fruits, strawberries, cherries. This was more elegant that I expected. Soft. As it opened the fruits turned a little darker, a little vanilla started to show. This lived up to expectations and the hype though I liked it better when first opened.

  • 2007 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Popped and poured. Cloudy, spicey, dark fruits, a damp forest floor character, funky but nice. Big and ripe, vanilla, dark fruits and a finish that reminds me of butterscotch. Among a bunch of very nice pinots, this was my least favorite, but it was still very nice.

  • 2010 V. Sattui Winery Pinot Noir Sattui Family

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Cranberry, strawberry rhubarb notes. The aromas are pretty big. Spice, vanilla, cola, slight oak. The wine is bright with red fruits. Slightly hotter in terms of alc than the others. I would put this in the top three of the night.

  • 2008 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Very perfumey nose but not as complex as the 09 somoma coast bottle. Spice, ripe fruits, soft. Overall this was similar to the sonoma coast but maybe a little softer and not as complex. Given the vintage was not the same, but for the money I'd buy the appellation bottling.

  • 2008 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Eastside Road Neighbors

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

I enjoyed this a lot. Slightly more restrained and delicate than the Kosta Browne and Rivers Marie we drank along side it. Very faint earthy notes, maybe a touch of smoke and vanilla, red and darker fruits. Nicely balanced. This was my favorite of the night though all the wines were good.
