Introduction

While this was the 2nd annual edition of this Burgundy dinner, it is the first that I have been part of. All wines but the Montrachet and Champagne were generously opened by Maciej. Tim crafted an exceptional meal, including the richest, most delicious mushroom tart I have ever had the pleasure of consuming. Patrick rounded things out nicely with a delicious sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1995 Champagne Fleury Champagne Extra Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Followed over approximately 3 hours. Nose of bruised apples, hazelnuts, biscuit, yeast, bread dough and a slight mushroom note. On the palate, tart green apple, burnt sugar, with raging acidity. Quite tart and bitter on the moderate length finish. This was bordering on too acidic for me, but overall quite nice. Refreshing, and paired well with the corresponding dish.

  • 2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet Domaine 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over the next 5-6 hours. On first pour the nose offers up notes of lemon rinds, wet stones, and fresh sea air. As it unfurled, exotic notes of tropical fruits (mango, papaya, pineapple), white peach and a scent that I can only describe as fresh herbs were screaming from the glass. Some oak is apparent on the nose, but not off putting. In the mouth, this is extremely viscous and caresses every millimeter with tastes of lemon drop, stones, and tropical fruits. A huge acidic backbone sets this up to last in the cellar a good number of years and the finish goes on for days. The opening of this particular wine gave rise to a memorable quote: "This is so infanticide, it's abortion".

  • 1971 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over approximately 3 hours. This cork was quite fragile and broke in half on extraction, although we were successful in getting it out of the bottle with no chunks falling in to the wine. Heavy sediment was noted. In the glass, this was garnet in colour, with some bricking as well as some cloudiness. On the nose, big red fruits, truffle, wet leaves, forest floor, baking spice and hints of what I interpreted as coriander. On the palate, sweet red fruits, mushroom, iodine, leather and soy sauce. As the night progressed this got seemingly more youthful with more of that sweet red fruit and spice coming out. Great acidity remains in this wine, and there is a slight tannic grip on the palate. Nice long finish with great complexity of flavour and richness. Exceptional showing. In the background, Dave and Tim are bickering over the sauce for the upcoming course.

  • 1985 Georges Lignier et Fils Bonnes Mares 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over the next 3 hours or so. Cork was extracted with no difficulty. Dark garnet in the glass, with a nose of tart red cherries, baking spice, truffle, earth, undergrowth, plums and mint. Over time, and interesting coffee and soy sauce notes emerged. On the palate, many of the same notes are mirrored, showing tastes of tart cherries, plums, spice and earth. Massive finish laced with hints of a lovely sweetness. There is still some tannic structure holding on here that grips a bit on the finish. Acidity is in balance. This was served along side the best mushroom tart I have ever had in my life, although it did prompt some discussion. Tim had made the tart and was boasting about the 9 different types of mushroom used. Patrick then grilled him for the details, to which we learned there was only 6, as 4 of the specimens were agaricus bisporus, just at different stages of its development.

  • 1990 Domaine René Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Popped and poured, followed over the next 3 hours. The cork broke in two upon extraction. In the glass, deep garnet in colour with some slight bricking. On the nose, big red fruits, mushroom, earth, decomposing leaves and crushed stones. On the palate, bright red fruits, tea, earth. Very supple texture in the mouth, with a bit of sweetness to counterbalance the heavy acidity. Overall, very nice.

  • 1990 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed in the glass for the next few hours. Great fill level on the bottle, as will all of the bottles this evening. Cork was extracted in one piece without much difficulty. The was very dark in the glass, with a nose of dark fruits, plums, salt water, wet stones, spice and tea. In the mouth, the texture is quite silky. On the finish, the structure makes this seem incredibly young. Raging acidity, and some drying tannin. Overall, still quite primary with the very pure, brooding dark fruits. To me this was the darkest wine of the evening. Good, put seems like there is room for improvement over the next several years. At this point of the evening, the conversation is taking a turn for the worst, with jokes about small appendages, and people getting caught with meat in their hands.

  • 1995 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over the next few hours. Cork was extracted without difficulty. Heavy sediment was noted upon pouring, as I ended up with a significant amount in my glass, despite being stood up for an entire week before the tasting. Beautiful dark garnet in the glass. On the nose, red fruits, mushroom, truffle, earth, licorice and somewhat of an off putting metallic note. This could have been a result of quantity of the sediment in my glass, I am not certain. On the palate, nice red fruits, earth, licorice. This was quite a powerhouse with massive structure still. Some fine grained tannin and moderate acidity. Nice length to the finish. This could use some time, I would think.

  • 1995 Domaine Perrot-Minot Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Popped and poured and followed over the next few hours. One great fill after another. Once again, a nice deep garnet in the glass. On the nose, fresh sea air, cherries, raspberries, earth, baking spice, pomegranate, orange rind and a touch of mint. On the palate, cherries, earth, spice. Great balance of acidity here, with some mild tannic structure remaining. I'm a tad confused reading the other notes on here. Not only was this drinkable, it was absolutely delicious. To me, this was the opposite of clumsy, with a real elegance, especially next to the Jadot powerhouse.

  • 1997 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over approximately 3 hours. The was almost fully saturated, but was extracted without issue. Upon first pour, the nose was extremely vegetal, showing notes of raw green beans and asparagus. The nose also offered up scents of fresh cracked peppercorn, smoke, cherries, beets, licorice and earth. On the palate, this was still quite green and smoky, with some red fruits that tried admirably to counterbalance the green, but to no avail. Good balance here, with ample acidity and some nice sweet fruit. Time was not on this wine's side though, as throughout the course of the night, this became ashy and slightly astringent. After everything was all said and done, we had a good laugh that the La Tache was the "dog" of the evening.

  • 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over the next couple of hours. Nice deep colour in the glass with no bricking noted. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, mint leaves, baking spice, rose petals, sea air, crushed stones, truffle and a mild herbal note that seemed to intensify over the course of the evening. On the palate, very well balanced, showing red fruits, tea, spice, earth. Strong acid and fine grain tannin on the finish. Great texture in the mouth. Exceptional length on the finish. Wonderful.

  • 1990 Mommessin Clos de Tart 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru

Popped and poured, followed over the next few hours. Garnet in the glass with some mild bricking in the rim. Nose of bright red fruits, cherries, crushed stones, earth, cool sea breeze, with hints of blue fruit; kind of like mint but not quite. Very difficult to describe, but it was an interesting sense of coolness on the nose. On the palate, pomegranate, cherry, earth, heavy ball sweat, almost hard to put in to words. A great complexity of flavours and aromas. Exceptional balance with nice cool sweet fruits contrasted with a strong acidic balance and some mild tannin gripping on the finish. Lovely wine.
