Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1988 Gosset Champagne Célebris 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Musty, oxidized nose, but perfumed with yellow stone fruit. Not too concentrated on the palate, and I detected some light oak usage. Slightly metallic finish.

  • 2008 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Brutally sulphured nose. Nutty, rich, steely, and minerally. Judicious oak use, with great balance everywhere. Lovely '08-style acidity, and a very long finish.

  • 1985 Vieux Château Certan 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Spicy nose, with lots of secondary characteristics on the nose. Smoky, peppery, and spicy aromas. On the palate, the fruit is dissipating; there are flavours of tobacco, leather, and smoke. Seems dried out.

  • 2000 Denis Mugneret Père et Fils Clos Vougeot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Somewhat youthful on the nose; but there are also some slight musty notes. Also present are some dusty earth notes. Sweet and earthy on the palate, but not too concentrated. Seems to be fading.

  • 1985 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

From magnum. Incredibly rich nose. Perfumed and refined. Powerful fruit-driven aromas with no hint of oxidation. No sense of oak influence; the acidity has a steely mineral quality to it. Linear, concentrated and powerful. Incredible.

  • 2004 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

From magnum. Brown baking spice on the nose, but a bit of greenness is noticeable. Slightly astringent nose; it's like you can smell the stems. On the palate, this has good red berries and floral flavours, but still suffers from the greenness of the vintage. In context however, this is very good.

  • 2005 Ovid Red Wine 85 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Really inky. Very concentrated nose, with some soy sauce notes as well as notes of sour cherry and other red fruits. Very big and ripe on the palate as well. It's enjoyable but there just anything else to keep interest. Gets cloying.

  • 1999 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Cedary, vegetal nose. Slightly stemmy. Sweet on the palate; smooth tannins. Exuberant; I feel that this could use a bit more structure. For me, it just seems too hedonistic and ripe.

  • 1990 Château Montrose 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Slightly fecal aromas on the nose, but definitely identifiable as Bordeaux. On the palate, this is a bit too sweet, with dissipating tannins. A hedonistic wine. Great but not mindblowing.

  • 2001 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Centenaire 83 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The more I drink it, the more I realize I dislike Chateauneuf-du-Papes. An animalistic, barnyard-inflected funky nose. Very alcoholic and lots of acidity, but there is a feeling of unripeness in the wine that makes me wonder how one would use such green grapes to make such alcoholic wine. Astringent, and not pleasant.

  • 2000 Sine Qua Non Syrah In Flagrante 93 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

Rich and ripe nose on which you can already detect the extraction. A small hint of chlorine. On the palate, this is very ripe and very, very sweet and fruity. The suaveness hides the high alcohol content which I'm guessing is around 15%. Seems like a vintage port without the bite of any spirits.
