Introduction

Some random super-tuscans, with a few extras thrown in for good measure.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1999 Pian Delle Vigne (Antinori) Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Marzipan, cherries, coffee. Showing some maturity, balanced, well-integrated tannins and a spritely freshness to the taste with a hint of grappa.

  • 2001 Antinori Tignanello 89 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Still a bit closed (after three hours of air), a bit dusty, blackberries, olives(?) and some spicy notes. Full-bodied, long, but needs more time.

  • 1993 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Vino da Tavola

Autumn leafs, tobacco, Jerusalem artichoke (jordärtskocka), cherries, typical Bordeaux nose. Balanced, long, delicous, but a bit lighter than expected of a Sassicaia. This wine is perfectly matured right now. Very, very good.

  • 2001 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

Black currant, cedar, anise, marzipan (sweet oak?), espresso, and lots more going on in this big nose. Rich, full-bodied, harmonious with well-shaped, slick tannins and a long aftertaste. Very good now but still too young. Will probably be superb in a few years.

  • 1989 Chateau Musar 90 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Beautiful aged color. After a dusty, wet-wooly smell cleared off, some fruit and a farmyard smell, a bit burnt, revealed itself. Not the most pleasant of smells, but the taste is much better: caramel, fruits, plums, warm fiery acids, balanced, elegant and completely mature, maybe a bit over the top. A survivor.

  • NV Fonseca Porto 10 Year Old Tawny 85 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Sweet, toffe, some heat, simple, but still quite good.

Closing

The Sassicaia was wonderful, but the Ornellaia is the greater wine, especially in a few years time. The Tignanello will (hopefully) develop some more interesting traits too.
