  • 2008 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano 89 Points

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino

The nose was rich and spicy with confectionary notes of berry tartlet. On the palate, it was firm with intense ripe mixed berries against rough tannin that dried out the finish. This wine should be buried in the cellar for another few years.

  • 2008 Piaggia (Vannucci) Carmignano Riserva Piaggia 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Carmignano

The nose showed intense raspberry jam, sweet spices and vanilla. On the palate, a vibrant and juicy mix of berries, floral notes and spice with dark chocolate filled the senses. The finish was medium-long with subtle tannins and lingering berry in chocolate notes. This will drink well with a good decant but should also be considered for the cellar.

  • 2004 Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero 97 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The ’04 Villero Riserva was one of the most intense yet balanced young Baroli that I have ever tasted. The nose showed rich elegant cherries, medicinal herbs, sweet spices and a subtle sheen of vanilla. On the palate, pure red berry fruit gave way to tar and menthol as this elegant wine turned to a structure that coated the entire palate in silky tannin and staying red fruits until the long close.

  • 2006 Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Salco Evoluzione 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

The nose showed rich dark berries, herbs and wood tones in an elegant expression of Sangiovese. On the palate, it was intense and mouth-filling with mixed berry fruit that turned juicy. Tannins lingered on the finish but didn’t get in the way of enjoying this bottle now. It will likely get even better with cellaring.

  • 2005 Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose showed red berries, cedar box, herbs and classic earthy Serralunga notes. On the palate, it was lean yet focused with red fruits up front but backward and bent in on itself, as the structure of this wine muted the palate. This wine needs time to truly show its potential. Give it another ten years before even attempting to understand what lies ahead.
