2004 Chateauneuf du Pape

This was an informal tasting at the Great Wine Buys wine store in Portland Oregon. The wines had been open for approximately one hour before the tasting and had been decanted and poured back into their bottles.

There was really only one flight, but I thought I'd separate the single white wine from the reds. I'd never had a white Chateauneuf du Pape and was very pleasantly suprised!

• 2004 Château Fortia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 90 Points

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Bright spicy nose with a hint of sweet apples - beautiful!
  Light bright fruit with a nice mouthfeel - very tasty.
  Pleasant but rather short finish.
  Blend of Roussanne and Marsanne.

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Vanilla, cinnamon and spices on the nose - rather light.
  Light fruit and berries on the palate.
  Short pleasant finish.
  Red Rhone Blend, primarily grenache.

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Vanilla and bright peppery spices on the nose.
  Dark berries and cinnamon flavor.
  Medium short finish - slightly bitter.
  Red Rhone Blend, primarily grenache.

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Rich barnyard nose with hints of roasted meat - very nice!
  Dark berries and cherries on the palate - a very smooth mouthfeel - wonderful!
  Medium finish - slightly hot.
  Red Rhone Blend - primarily grenache and morvedre.

  Beautiful vanilla and light fruit nose.
  Dark cherries and light berry (strawberry?) on the palate.
  Nice, but disappointingly short finish.

These 2004's seem to be much better, in general, than the 2003's (for which I have no formal notes...). I very much enjoyed the Chateau Fortia Blanc - I would like to do some more 'research' on the white Chateauneuf du Pape's!

Of the reds, the Chateau Fortia really jumped out at me - I believe the morvedre did it for me - I really like that grape.
