Last night 12 of us got together at my house to enjoy some special wines with some hearty, simple food. We worked our way through three non-blind flights and then paused briefly to chat and throw some steaks on the grill. Then we enjoyed the aged Pichon Lalande (1983, 1982, 1970) together with grilled rib steak, baked potato, and sauteed spinach. Heaven on earth! Finally, we leisurely worked our way through an interesting series of dessert wines.
All in all the level of quality was stunning, and all of us were rendered speechless by the final flight of Pichon. The group seemed evenly split on whether the 1982 or the 1970 PL was the wine of the night. The 1996 PL was universally loved, but the 2000 was painfully young for most tasters (not for me though, I flipped over it). The 1995 and 1989 PB were also widely praised. Frankly, even the weakest wines in these flights were still charming wines that we were all more than happy to drink.
Until the next time, cheers!
