La Paulee Gala

Introduction

This was another great La Paulee, including the gala itself and the after-party. No other introductory notes required.

Flight 1 - Gala (42 Notes)

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Musigny 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

From some unbelievably large format (15L?) that adequately served the entire La Paulee Gala (300+ people?). Mature re cherry and raspberry aromas with some smoky elements in background. Silky textures show incredible grace and elegance. Still showing lots of acidity and energy on finish, which showed tart fruit and some enticing baking spice.

  • 2007 Domaine Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

I've tasted many of the Fourrier wines from 2007 over the past few years, and this is the first I can recall as outstanding, with most of them reflecting the vintage's challenges. Great red and black cherry aromas that follow through perfectly on the palate, even if slightly tart. Wonderful spice emerges from middle to finish.

  • 1996 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Terribly oxidized.

  • 1996 Etienne Sauzet Chevalier-Montrachet 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Powerful and lush aromas of candied apple, peach and mint with charming floral support. Big and powerful on palate with fresh fruit, but well supported by lots of acids and minerality that help provide length and elegant textures into long finish. Such a shame the Sauzet 1996 Montrachet I brought to follow this wine was horribly oxidized.

  • 2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

From magnum. Lush fruit on nose and palate, accompanied by modest spice. Fruit ripeness with hints of tropical fruit made it challenging to find length and structure in the short timeframe La Paulee effectively allows.

  • 1991 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Very advanced and overly mature for its age. Clearly showing lush and powerful fruit, but tough to appreciate.

  • 1990 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Lush, powerful fruit to start with the telltale "Ramonet" wintergreen mint, accompanied by more good spice. Lush peach on palate, with transitioned to more lean green apple, also with good spice. Certainly a mature wine that won't be getting much better, I'd be drinking these over the next few years if this bottle was representative. Much less advanced than its 1991 counterpart tasted slightly earlier.

  • 1995 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

From 3L. Ripe apple aromas with plenty of mint. Starts with similarly ripe flavors on palate with some good baking spice. Finish showed some faint citrus elements as well, even if the acid protrudes a bit. Drinking well now.

  • 2001 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru

Very ripe black cherry aromas with a good perfumed character. Same fruit on palate with lots of acidity and structure that overshadows the fruit and spice a bit today. From 6L. In this format, I don't think it's even close to ready.

  • 1962 Maison Leroy La Romanée 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

Lingering black fruit aromas behind lots of earth. Also mostly earthy on the palate with some faint spice hints. From near the end of the bottle with a fair amount of sediment.

  • 1969 Maison Albert Bichot La Romanée 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

Aromas of earth, heavily reduced mushroom with prominent background licorice and baking spice. Powerful flavors on the palate show a bit more fruit behind the good earthy flavors and classically Vosne spice. Good power for its age.

  • 1983 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Lush stone fruit on nose and palate with some sweet baking spice, but also very mature, past its peak for my taste. I wouldn't be holding this any longer.

  • 1985 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Started lush and powerful with huge spicebox. Flavors of candied apple and ripe pear. I was surprised that this wine shortened and simplified even in just the 15 minutes I was able to keep this in glass. Certainly a wonderful wine, but perhaps not a perfect bottle.

  • 2000 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

From magnum. Fresh floral start with ripe stone fruit. Everything came across in perfect balance on the palate, with ripe peach and charming spice that is very nicely structured and textured. It's not the most dense, long or powerful 2000 Montrachet, but very elegant and enticing today. Thankfully there were no signs of oxidation, but I still wouldn't consider this a long-term cellar hold given its moderate density.

  • 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Great black fruit with huge spice and power to spare. Very similar to another bottle tasted just a few months ago. This wine will last for decades to come.

  • 1999 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Black and red fruit aromas with modest spice and a classic Gevrey animale character. Palate is more black fruit with a bit more prominent spice. Well textured. Moderate length.

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Lush fruit aromas with sensational baking spice. Red and black cherry flavors with the same sensational spice and amazing textures. Quite powerful in every way and still approaching its peak drinking window. What a weekend - this the 3rd time I'm trying this wine in 4 days. All quite similar, but this was not quite as great as the bottle at RN74 on Thursday, while slightly better than the bottle at the DRC dinner on Wednesday.

  • 1990 Domaine Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Very ripe black cherry and blackberry aromas with plenty of spice, at least as much Leroy as it is Gevrey. Kept opening up with more air, getting longer, more dense and intense. Big spice and power on finish.

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Red and black fruit on nose with modest spice (for Leroy). Starts with lots of powerful fruit, ends with more energy and finesse. Just a trace less spice and energy vs. another bottle tasted a few months ago.

  • 1996 Domaine Leroy Chambertin 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

This is the second time I've had this wine and once again it was a head-turning beauty. Starts with incredibly alluring spice in front of big black fruit aromas. Black cherry and blackberry flavors accompanied by everything you want in a great middle-aged red Burgundy - silky tannins, incredibly density and extract, great acidity and minerality. Really sensational and stunning.

  • 1992 Domaine Leroy Richebourg 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

More interesting than enjoyable. Rather mature nose, not really showing Richebourg spice. This was the rare Leroy that was more interesting on the palate, with some tart red cherry flavors, more interesting earthy support and spice hints.

  • 1983 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Incredibly spicy and perfumed aromas, classically Dujac. Plenty of vibrant red fruit, even more prominent than the earthy character. Great textures from start to finish. An incredible positive surprise.

  • 1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Very ripe blackberry and black cherry on nose with intriguing Asian spice. Palate is also quite ripe, bordering on showing burnt fruit, with less spice than the nose would imply. Moderate length and finish.

  • 1979 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Really alluring spice on nose, accompanied by good red cherry and earthy aromas. Palate had a bit more earth than fruit, but also nice spice, but there was a slightly muddy character that emerged from middle to finish.

  • 1992 Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanée St. Vivant 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

This was open over an hour before I tasted it and i was told it was better earlier. Lots of earthy aromas that still showed some oak spice. Flavors had some good earthy character and red fruit traces, but too much less attractive stewy elements as well.

  • 1978 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Ripe fruit on the nose with rustic earthy aromas. Also ripe on palate and easy to enjoy. I'd have like to have seen a bit more complexity.

  • 1978 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Had a nice perfumed start with ripe, black fruit, but this got rather short rather quickly. Dan thought it was likely slightly corked, so I will trust his judgment. I will likely bring another bottle from the same case to La Paulee next year...hopefully this one won't be corked.

  • 1996 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Most curious. I've now had 4 bottles from the same case. Two were exceptional, two uninteresting. At some level I think this was a flawed bottle, but it was more muted and uninterested than showing any easily identifiable flaw.

  • 1990 Domaine A.-F. Gros Richebourg 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

I really wanted to love this wine as I'm a huge fan of Anne Gros Richebourg and this was the oldest version of the wine in its earlier incarnation under the Domaine name she shared with her father with several years. Ripe black fruit was easy to enjoy with modest spice and not much subtlety.

  • 1959 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Sensational aromas showing intense baking spice. Palate was far more muted and faded, mostly just showing earth and brown sugar character, not nearly as interesting. 95 point nose with an 83 point palate.

  • 1998 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Good floral start with red cherry aromas. Engaging red and black cherry flavors with modest spice, with a fairly simple follow through.

  • 1997 Domaine Leroy Richebourg 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Great floral start, classically perfumed in the Leroy style. Palate was far more subdued and less interesting, with modest red fruit and spice and a fairly simple finish.

  • 1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Aromas of red and black fruit and plenty of new oak spice. Palate was a bit more black with a sweet character to start but lots of tannins and acidity dominating the middle. No question this is a sensational wine, just in need of lots more time...far more than its 1999 counterpart also tasted.

  • 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Huge spice start with black and red cherry cherry aromas, along with background dark coffee. Palate of black cherry, blackberry and even some black plum hints. Consistent and powerful fruit and spice all the way from start to finish. Still a long way from its peak drinking window, but still so alluring today.

  • 1996 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Incredible red cherry aromas with sensational dried rose petal and perfumed character. Palate of red cherry and ripe raspberry with sensational clove, licorice and cinnamon spice flavors. Long, powerful and textured, this just kept expanding into its explosive finish. This wine seems to keep getting better with every bottle i get to try.

  • 2001 Camille Giroud Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Still far from its peak drinking window, this showed great spice on the nose along with some backward red fruit. Palate had both black and red cherry flavors, but well behind lots of acidic and tannic structure today. Great spice re-emerged on the finish. My score is based on where I think this will evolve, but I also think that will take another 10 years.

  • 1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Even at this late point in the evening, the signature La Tache aromatics stood out here. This spice was more prominent than either the red fruit or earthy aromas that worked well in background. Palate was quite subtle and elegant, with interesting cherry flavors working well with good overall spice. A wonderful weightlessness that would probably be much better in a different context where you could focus on the wine's nuances.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Black fruit aromas with subtle spice to start on the nose, followed by more robust spice on the palate. Still firmly structured with assertive acidity and tannins, I think this wine has a good way to go before reaching its peak drinking window.

  • 1990 Chopin-Groffier Clos Vougeot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

An overall ripe wine on both nose and palate, showing all of 1990's strengths and weaknesses. Drink up.

  • 1969 Gustave Gros Richebourg 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Rare wine to see from yet another of the old Gros family. Fruit was just a distant memory and some of the structure was a bit strong for the remaining earthy flavors, but still easy to enjoy for its history. Under the "Alexis Lichine" label, but with Gustave Gros clearly identified as the 'proprietaire."

  • 1966 Camille Giroud Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Aromas of forest, old leather, braised beef and some Asian spice. Dense flavors are surprisingly lively, fresh and assertive for a 50+ year old 1er. Powerful and fairly long, this wine should hold well for a long time. David Croix from Camille Giroud told me that Giroud's former owners thought this one of the better wines they ever made.

  • 1988 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Huge black fruit aromas with Asian spice, all of which continues on to the palate. Great balance with lots of very silky texture, really impressive for a 1988. Big black fruit on finish, with lots of life remaining.

Flight 2 - But Wait...There's More at RN74 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Ripe black fruit aromas with Gevrey-styled meaty/earthy aromas along with background new oak spice. Palate came across as slightly more ripe with modest spice, supported by just modest acidity. Drinking well now, i don't really see this getting any more nuanced or interesting.

  • 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Charming baking spice aromas with plenty of forest floor character. Palate was also quite earthy with same good spice, but quite mature. Good finesse and length, but frankly not to the level I would hope to get from La Tache in a great red Burgundy vintage.

  • 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Ripe red and black cherry work well with earthy aromas, but these were all behind great sweet baking spice. Flavors balanced the earthy and fruit components well, nicely supported by good acids and tannins that gave a firming character. Far superior to the 1985 La Tache tasted shortly after.
