Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine du Val de Saône (Guy Bussière) Pinot Noir 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Vin de Pays de Sainte Marie la Blanche

Popped and poured, served blind, followed for approximately one hour. On the nose, this shows red fruits, spice, white pepper, grapefruit, seaweed, sewage and some reduction. On the palate, red fruits, spice and swamp water. The finish is a tad short, with some drying tannin and slightly less than medium acidity. There was some talk amongst the group about this possibly being Grenache, but I stuck to my guns and went with Pinot from New Zealand. There was nothing Burgundian about this Pinot, despite it's origins.

  • 2005 Château Brown 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Decanted quickly for potential sediment, served blind to the group (my wine), and followed for approximately an hour. On the nose, cassis, ripe red berries, pencil shavings, crushed rocks and menthol. On the palate, currant, raspberry, graphite and a hint of pyrazine. Nice concentration on the palate, with some moderate tannic structure, but relatively low acidity. The finish is nothing to write home about, and is a touch bitter. The group mostly guessed California on this one, as it was quite ripe and had lower acidity.

  • 2008 Château Pontet-Chappaz 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Popped and poured, served blind, followed for approximately one hour. On the nose, this has intense graphite that almost overpowers everything else, and also shows a bit of dark fruit hiding, as well as a bit of cedar and herbs. On the palate, dark berries, pencil lead, herbs and oak. Relatively big tannic structure here, with medium acidity, which frames the bitter finish. With air, this did not get any better. I was hoping the fruit would come out, but this essentially smelled like a cup full of pencil shavings. I guessed this one as 2008 Bordeaux, which proved to be correct.

  • 2004 Château Segur de Cabanac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

As I understand, this was double decanted prior to the tasting, served blind and followed for approximately one hour. Showing striking similarity to the other wines this evening, this shows currants, red berries, pencil lead, and light bell pepper. With further air, this really opened up nicely, showing real earthiness and decomposing leaves. There was a bit of a cheesy/lactic note on first pour that seems to fade with time in the glass. On the palate, showing currants and red fruits, earth, brown sugar, and a touch of pyrazine. Tannins are still prevalent and the acidity is slightly less than medium. Finish is moderate with just a hint of heat. I guessed Bordeaux, but got the vintage way off. On first pour, this seemed much younger.

  • 2007 Masciarelli Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Marina Cvetić 89 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Popped and poured, served blind, followed over approximately 1 hour. On the nose, this shows dark fruits, raisins, dark chocolate, slate, florals and a hint of mint. On the palate, more raisined dark fruits and bitter chocolate. Extremely concentrated, bordering on over extraction, with high tannin and high acidity. Finish is quite long but does show some heat.

  • 2005 Silvio Grasso Barolo Pì Vigne 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Quickly decanted for sediment, served blind, followed for approximately an hour. On the nose, this is showing black cherry, spice, oak, with a hint of menthol and tar. On the palate, cherries and spice. Tannins are still quite massive, and there is some raging acidity. Finish is moderate. I note some bricking and sediment in my glass, so I thought there was a bit of age on this and I was pretty certain it was Nebbiolo. Overall, this was pretty simplistic, and does not appear to have the potential for improvement. Not a wine to sit and contemplate, but would be great to enjoy with a meal.

  • 2006 Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Poured in to a decanter, served immediately to the group blind (my wine), followed over about an hour. On the nose, this is showing cherry, tar, big menthol, with very light florals and spice. On the palate, bitter cherry, menthol and spice. Obviously, massive structure at this point with huge drying tannin on the finish and mouth puckering acidity. It was quite obvious to the group that this was Barolo. I'm curious what Galloni sees in this wine, as to my palate, this will not reach the heights that he suggests. As this has some time to age out, this could warrant another point, maybe two.

  • 2006 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 89 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Decanted quickly and served immediately blind to the group (my wine). Followed over approximately an hour. On the nose, this shows dark fruits, black cherry, oak, spice, blood and iron. On the palate, more of the same. Moderate tannin and acidity is present, and the 15% alcohol is quite apparent on the finish. Again, not quite sure what Galloni sees in this. The group easily guessed this one as Brunello and was equally unimpressed.

  • 1997 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted quickly for sediment, served blind to the group (my wine), followed for less than an hour, as this was gone pretty quick. Beautiful complexity on the nose, showing cassis, red berries, earth, humidor, leather, mushroom, truffle, undergrowth, light bell pepper and celery seed from the pyrazine. On the palate, red fruits, earth, leather and pyrazine. Still some nice structure here with a bit of grip on the finish, and juicy acidity. Finish is nice and long. This is by far the best bottle I've had of this yet, and is in a perfect spot for my tastes, still showing that gorgeous fruit, but also some excellent tertiary notes. The group guessed Bordeaux on this, and I don't blame them. Great showing from this bottling.

  • 2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

I certainly admire Dave's determination. Despite several awful showings from this bottle, he is dead set on having me experience on classic bottle of this. Unfortunately for him, that was not tonight. This is the best bottle that I've had, but it does not come close to the group's previous experience with an exceptional bottle. On the nose, this showed dark cherries, dark fruits, chocolate, iron, slight florals, dried herbs, and a bit of menthol. On the palate, dark fruits, bitter chocolate, blood and herbs. Reasonable balance, with moderate tannin and acidity. Finish is medium length. Certainly a decent wine, but not a strong showing based on expectations.
