Flight 1 - Dinner wines before the game... (6 Notes)

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Very pretty aromatics of ripe yellow tropical fruits with crushed rocks. Grilled pineapple notes and some oily nut notes. Ripe tropical fruits on the palate as well with great length and acidity. Some mineral structure is buried in there. We figured the wine could be 50/50, but is showed great.

  • 2001 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Popped and poured. The nose started off a little angular, but after about 20 mintues it all came together. Notes of red cherry and cranberry with touches of floral, mineral and clove. Nice mixture of flavors on the palate with decent length. Though after another 20 minutes or so it seemed to start falling apart and some unappealing earthy tones began to take over. On to the next glass...

  • 2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Its been about a year and half since the last time I've had this and it hasn't really changed much. A very elegant mix of red fruit and floral with crushed stone. Some lighter spice notes in the background. Red fruit and floral palate as well with a lot of mineral structure. The wines flavors really expand on the long finish. Gripping, well balanced wine with plenty of structure of allow for aging.

  • 1999 Lucien Le Moine Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Dark red fruit and black cherry on the nose and palate with densely packed spice. Some earth and mineral tones as well. Nice texture and grip to the palate. Lengthy finish with fine tannins. Very nice!

  • 1990 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Popped and poured (unfortunately). Powerful, dense aromatics of black cherry and currant with earth, leather and bitter chocolate notes. Less 'bretty" than other bottles I've had. Full bodied and expansive on the palate. Same flavors as on the nose. Great texture. Lots of power with very long length. Quite a bit of tannin remaining. Delicious, but young.

  • 1996 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Basically popped and poured. Seemed leaner or perhaps a bit shut down when compared to the 90 Montrose in the next glass. Darker firm red currant and cherry with tobacco and mineral tones with touches of new leather. The fruit was there on the palate, but it was fairly structured and not giving tons. Medium plus bodied with a moderate finish. Still in need of more time or an extended decant.

Flight 2 - A few wines after the game... (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Popped and poured. Really fantastic aromatics right from the start. Densely packed, dark/almost black, berry and cherry with lots of asian spice, soy and some mineral notes. Fruit froward, powerful cherry/berry fruit on the palate with a lot of remaining structure. Incredible spice notes all throughout. Great balance and acidity with huge length. Absolutely fantastic wine, but so far from being in its prime.

  • 1998 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Popped and poured. (right after the 99 Cros Parantoux) Like the 99, pretty densely packed aromatics. Mostly red berry and cherry, with earth, and again, soy and asian spices. Some crushed stones and floral tones. Palate also had pretty red berry flavor notes and spice, but seemed a little flat when compared with another bottle had in November of last year. Good mineral structure. Medium bodied palate with a medium/medium minus finish. Not a perfect bottle, but that certainly did not stop me from finishing the glass.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Amazing aromatics upon opening. A very seductive mixture of red cherry and berry with star anise, clove and light soy/hoisen. A floral lift comes through as well. Densely packed fruit, spice and floral on the medium plus bodied palate. Great texture and a very long finish. Fantastic balance with wonderful acidity. Mineral structure to allow for further aging, but showing fantastic now. A wonderful treat!

  • 1999 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Seductive, dense aromatics of black cherry and berry, brown spices, earth and some floral tones. Ripe fruit on the palate as well with a great mix of damp earth and spice all throughout. Lots of structure with a long finish. In a nice window, but has plenty of time left. Delicious wine and a nice finish to the night.
