Château du Clos de Vougeot
Tasted Tuesday, March 20, 2012 by Burgundy Al with 1,496 views
Sensational tasting of the wines from Vosne-Romanee, Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot, mostly from the great 2010 vintage. Excellent across-the-board, with Echezeaux particularly standing out. We did not have time to taste with all the producers...and alas I didn't take notes with every producer.
Wine tasting. Lean fruit aromas with oak spice. Red and black cherry on palate. Acid driven with firm structure. Good for its level.

Wine tasting. Charming red cherry and berry aromas with great spice. Lean red fruit flavors to start, also with great spice. Expanding finish with impressive spice and overall structure. To me, this was a good step up in quality over the good Clos Vougeot. Big exciting finish, this is another excellent 2010 Echezeaux, with 92-94 point potential here.

Wine tasting. Ripe black cherry and black berry with big aromatic intensity. Very firm on palate with lots of extract and potential, just not showing much charm yet. Give this until at least 2025 in the cellar.

Wine tasting. Red cherry and strawberry on nose and palate with modest spice. Bolder and bigger than the Beaux Monts just tasted, but still not quite to the extent I'd normally expect from Suchots in a good vintage.

Wine tasting. Tart red cherry aromas. Lean on palate, a bit angular. This is the only Vosne Genaivrières I can ever recall other than from Domaine Leroy.

Wine tasting. Red cherry aromas with big spice, also slightly floral. Black and red cherry on palate, also showing big baking spice. Long finish. I think this was the first Cacheux Echezeaux I've ever had, and I was impressed.

Tasting. Wow! Ripe blackberry and black cherry aromas with very alluring baking spice. Reticent fruit on palate, same fruit profile, with great spice. Power and elegance at the same time with amazing textures and a crunchy character. Classically styled Vosne. Long, precise and powerful finish. Give this to at least 2030 to really show its full potential. It is tough to say which is better - this Malconsorts or the Romanee-Saint Vivant, but I was leaning towards the Malconsorts this morning, with 95-97 point potential.

Tasting. Black and blue fruit aromas with alluring spice and good floral charm. Fat black cherry and boysenberry flavors with good spice. Very tough to decide which I preferred - this RSV or the Malconsorts. I'm leaning towards the Malconsorts for the long-term with its greater precision and length, although this RSV was gorgeous, lush and nuanced.

Tasting. Dense black fruit aromas. Big-scaled, meaty black cherry flavors with good licorice and pepper. Long finish starts showing finesse. 92-94 point potential for me today. One of the few examples of a 2010 Clos Vougeot I preferred today vs. the same producer's 2010 Echezeaux.

Tasting. Slightly reductive start. Red fruit with lots of sweet baking spice aromas. Palate is compact to start with spice re-emerging on finish. This will take lots of time, but I think it has 92-95 point potential.

Tasting. Great spice-driven aromas showcase both great fruit and good new oak elements. Mostly red fruit on nose and palate, accessible and and charming already. Good structure is subtle and balanced, but provides textures and energy into a moderately long finish.

Tasting. Intense black and red fruit aromas with modest spice. Palate also fruit-driven with great density and concentration. Firmly structured, but with very silky tannins. Great potential, needing more patience than the Echezeaux just tasted, probably best 2020-2035. 92-95 point potential for me today.

Tasting. Incredible right now, with fantastic potential in its peak drinking window, which should be 2020-2040. Strawberry and red cherry start with great perfume and baking spice. Similar on palate with great density and breadth. Archetypal Richebourg. 94-97 point potential for me this morning.

Tastng. Great spice with red fruit and some prominent new oak spice. Red and black cherry flavors with good spice and overall elegance. I preferred the Reas to the Brulees also tasted.

Tasting. Very ripe fruit - black cherry, blackberry with a hint of liqueur and plenty of new oak. This wine will need a decade in cellar but has lots of extract and raw materials, even if not seeming in perfect balance this morning.

Tasting. slightly floral with black cherry and boysenberry aromas. Similar fruit, slightly reticent for now, behind firm tannins and assertive acid. This will require more patience than the Echezeaux, and for me is one notch below, 90-92 point potential for me this morning.

Wine tasting. Sweet black fruit aromas with modest spice. Similar profile on palate, but quite compact for now. Long and powerful finish starts to show more emerging spice. Very impressive raw material is clearly in the background, and while this is good and well balanced today, give this 15 years to show its true character.

Wine tasting. I don't think I have ever tried this producer's RSV in any vintage. Sweet black fruit aromas with some new oak spice. Ripe fruit flavors, very good acidity and energy, moderate tannins and concentration. A good Romanée St. Vivant.

Tasting. An impressive Villages Vosne. Black and red cherry with raspberry aromas along with some allspice and cinnamon. Big mostly red fruit again on palate with modest spice. Very well textured and balanced, quiite long for its level. I also prefer this to its 2009 counterpart also tasted.

Wine tasting. Great floral start with red cherry aromas and alluring spice array that seems to show Indian curry and Asian five spice. Ripe cherry flavors also complemented by big spice. Long finish, great balance, power emerging on end. I prefer this to its 2009 counterpart also tasted today. Showed 93-96 point potential for me this morning.

Wine tasting. Red and black cherry with modest spice aromas. Similar fruit profile on palate, but somewhat subdued with bigger bones and overall structure. Acid-driven finish with lots of charm and energy. this needs plenty of time in the cellar. Very interest contrast to the Echezeaux just tasted, which was more fruit-and-spice-driven,while this wonderful Clos Vougeot is more powerful and beautifully structured. I slightly prefer the Echezeaux, but it's close. This shows 92-94 point potential to me this morning.

Wine tasting. Big lush fruit aromas with hints of liqueur, anise and cinnamon. Same large and ripe flavors of black cherry with good spice support. Lush and easy, but lots of sneaky structure in background providing energy and lift. Will drink well young, will also be a good long-term cellar hold. While this was wonderful, I slightly prefer its 2010 counterpart also tasted this morning. 92-94 point potential to me this morning.

Wine tasting. Great perfumed start with black cherry and baking spice. Same black cherry on palate that is both fresh and ripe at the same time, with a big, expanding finish. Power emerging on end. I understand this was harvested first and that seems to have been wise based on how well this showed this morning. Worth seeking out.
