Introduction

It's a wonderful thing to arrange a wine dinner together with your children. Shopping with My on Thursday. Cooking together on Friday evening and enjoying the wines in three flights.
Nina, Mattias, My, Joel, Jakob, Josephine and two late guests.

Flight 1 - Pickled herring (1 Note)

Two types of pickled herring on thin crackers MARRIED this wonderful wine.

  • 1999 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Non-blind. Served immediately.
    Nice, mature color.
Very fine petroleum nose with fruity Riesling components.
Taste is the reason why mature Rieslings are so great. Unusually low levels of acids for a Riesling, but nothing bothersome. Fantastic balance, long, multi-faceted expressions and a lot of happy peach.
Married its plate: two kinds of sill (pickled herring): Elderberry and citrus + garlic.

Flight 2 - Salad with hidden secrets and pak choi vegetable in slimy sauce - Chinese style (2 Notes)

The wines were unnecessarily ill-chosen. (I'm the culprit.)

Flight 3 - Where's the beef? (4 Notes)

Fillet of beef with Coffee Rub, sautéed mushrooms chipotle style with ruccola and aïoli.
Followed by a "complicated" cheese plate.

  • 2009 Château Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône 90 Points

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

    Non-blind. Slow-ox 4 hrs.
There was almost a fight for the last few drops from this bottle :-)
Brambly, warm nose with some Syrah anise seed and grandeur.
Rich, velvety, wonderful palate. All in balance. Strutting its stuff. Voted WOTE because it's built like an *amazing* French kiss.

  • 2007 Château de Fonbel 78 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Non-blind.
    Slow-ox 4 hrs
Some earthy Bordeaux character in an otherwise flat nose. Bland.

One glass next day from corked bottle (1/2 remains)
Still remaining a no flaws low-level Bordeaux with hints of ashes - don't bother. (Still have 5 btls, hope they get better.)

  • 2008 Château Bouscassé Madiran 84 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

    Non-blind.
    Blackish wine.

    Slow-ox for 4 hrs.
Small, dark fruit fruity nose. On the palate it feels green, unbalanced with unpleasant acids and tannic as expected. Not pleasant at all and not so interesting.

Next day, 1 small serving still in corked bottle.
Nose shows some more nuance, but not much. on the palate it is coming around. Still overly aggressive acids feeling like unripe berries but showing off some brambly dark berries in a fine way. So, maybe I'll get one more bottle just out of curiosity and place it deeply in the most hidden wine fridge... Longing for the 2009 to come my way!

  • 2009 La Bastide Blanche Bandol 91 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Non-blind. 4 hrs slow-ox.
The second bottle to be emptied by the thirsty gang.
Black. Somewhat brambly nose, but mainly YOUNG.
In the mouth this is a full frontal attack in a rustic way. Like being attacked by screaming warriors with short swords and chain-armor. Whole-heartedly agree that this wine lends itself well to medieval allegories.
Will probably develop much with some serious cellaring. 6 btls to go.

Flight 4 - Desert (1 Note)

Dessert (rhum ice-cream and strawberry sorbet) served with the Champagne.
Dark Rhum praline with green tea and Alexander Grappa.

  • NV De Castelnau Champagne Brut 85 Points

    France, Champagne

    Non-blind. Had immediately.
    Bready, typical nose.
Is finely creamy in the mouth, balanced with fine acids. Lacks complexity/depth to be interesting. For a Champagne, ok QPR.

Closing

The Côte du Rhône was the WOTN. High odds for that one. The most promising (of course) being the Bastide Blanche.
The cheese plate was a little complicated and grappa was found to not be a big hit amongst the kids.
Little over half the wine was drunk and only a very small amount of grappa.
Kids went out clubbing. Daddy went to bed.
