Introduction

Dinner was outside at Hudson's on the Bend with absolutely perfect weather. We had a great menu that included:

Hors D'oeuvres

  • Smoked Duck Diablos with a Red Chili Sauce
  • Crunchy Shrimp with Mango Jalapeno Aioli Splashed with an Ancho Paint

  • Tossed Garden Greens, Candied Almonds, Marinated Tomatillos with Roasted Poblano Lime Dressing

  • Espresso Rubbed Smoke Elk Back Strap finished with a Chipotle Lime Beer Blanc
  • Pecan Smoked Duck Breast Shingled with Seared Diver Scallops Nestled in a Wild Boar Sweet Potato Hash and Blackberry Chipotle Sauce
  • Smoked Duck Diablos with a Red Chili Sauce
  • Pecan Crusted Snapper with a Lemon Chili de Arbol Beurre Blanc Sauce

    • 2008 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

      Germany, Nahe

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner from a magnum. Nose of melons, honeysuckle and white flowers. Similar palate with a nice effervescent quality. Smooth and crisp consistent finish but would liked for it to have been a bit longer. All in all, this one is drinking nicely despite its youth.

    • 2002 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé Rosé 90 Points

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nose of yeast, strawberries and white fruit. Similar on the palate with a good amount of yeast and a hint of spice. The finish was a bit of a disappointment as it was fairly short and ended with a bitter note.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nice nose of honeysuckle and apples. More honey on the palate along with caramel and baked bread. Medium-long length consistent finish. Very enjoyable but would probably hold for a few more years.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nose and palate of peaches, apricots, caramel, gravel, spice, nuts, white flowers and a hint of butter. Long consistent finish with nice acidity. Drink now but save a few to see how it continues to evolve. An easy WOTN contender in a lineup of 20+ wines.

    • 2005 Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Altenbourg Cuvée Laurence 92 Points

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner from a magnum. Nose of light fruit and white flowers. Similar palate with the addition of some spice and mineral layers. It is showing a bit hot in the middle and the finish is a bit short at this stage. After around 3 hours of being open, i tasted again and noted that the nose became much more floral and perfumey. Very enjoyable now but I would hold for 5 years +.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Didn't take detailed notes but from memory this wine was not anything like my last tasting and was a bit tired to say the least. It was flabby with nothing on the palate despite a decent nose. No rating.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Floral nose with honey and citrus. Similar palate with the addition of some spice. Didnt note the alcohol level but the texture was thick and viscous but didn't smell or taste terribly hot. Very nice, medium-long length finish. I would like to try this one again in a few years and reassess.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. PnP. Big buttery nose with apple, citrus and smoke notes. Caramel and peaches on the palate. The finish was a bit hot with a touch of spice. Not exactly my style but either way, I would hold this one for a few more years.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. PnP. Red berries and cherries on the nose along with earth and some greenery. The palate has more of the same with a few extra layers of dirt, spice and maybe some herbs. The tannins took over and I had a hard time with the finish. Let this one sleep for 5-10 years.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nose of strawberries with a hint of floral. More strawberries along with cherries and tons of spice on the palate. Medium length finish. Very enjoyable but needs a few more years to settle down.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Big perfumey nose with hints of leather and flint and some exotic spices. On the palate it has red fruit, rubber, spice and earth. Very long finish with rubber and earth and a touch of spice at the very end. Firm tannins, hold for another 2 years unless somehow you have several bottles left. My WOTN due to the nice balance it had between floral, fruit, spice and earth components.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nose of dark berries, funk and mint. More mint on the palate along with licorice, roasted meat and some blueberries. Sour fruit and oak on the medium length finish. Very firm tannins. Hold for a few to several more years.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner from a magnum. Nice CdP nose of roasted meats, spice, leather and some funk. More of the same on the palate with anise, pepper and cedar. Medium-long length finish with very firm tannins. Hold for 5 years minimum.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nose of dark berries, spice and lots of leather. Tons more leather on the palate. Good length on the finish but this one is in a weird place right now. Hold for several more years, maybe 7+.

    • 1974 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 92 Points

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Opened approximately 2 hours before pouring. If it is like other California wines I have had from the 70's, it could have likely benefited from some more slow-oxing before tasting. It had nice red fruit and dark berries on the nose along with some leather. On the palate it had more of the same along with some graphite, bell peppers and eucalyptus. The texture was very fine and the tannins mostly resolved. Long, dusty finish. Quite enjoyable but would liked to have sequestered myself with the bottle and followed it over a few more hours.

      Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Nose of cherries and leather. More of the same on the palate along with some spicy cigar box. Medium length finish consistent finish. Seems to have some life left in it but would probably open in the next 2 years to be safe.

      Tasted non blind. Initial tasting was PnP. Nose of green peppers, black currants, cedar and a slight hint of heat. It spreads all across the palate with cassis, cedar, mint and graphite. Long finish with cassis and cellar dust carrying all the way to the end. Nice acidity with a fine texture. Medium tannins. Ready to drink now and over the next few to several years.
