Introduction

A wonderful dinner with Anthony Barton trying a vertical of his wines.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Jean Laurent Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Small bubbles with a lot of energy. Nose of brioche, citrus and lots of minerality. Fresh smooth palate. Very nice for the price.

Closed nose with hints of black fruit and earth. Mouth feel is slightly tannic. Come back in another 5 years.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Barton 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This has a really big nose that represents the warmth of that year. You could almost say it has a Californian feel to it. Nose of cassis, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco and earth. Smooth rich mouth with a medium length.

  • 1999 Château Léoville Barton 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Anthony said there was a lot of rain that year and it was nearly a washout but somehow they managed to save the crop. Nose of red fruit, pencil shavings and vanilla. Medium length. Classic claret

  • 1995 Château Langoa Barton 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This is a easier softer wine to approach with a nice palate.

Notes of earth, blackberries, tobacco, forest floor and cinnamon. Pleasant mouth feel with no harsh edges with a medium length.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Barton 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Full bodied strong and rich with years of life left in it.

Nose of cassis, cedar, earth and spice. Silky smooth deep rich mouth with a long length.

  • 1988 Château Léoville Barton 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Classic Claret. Refined nose and medium palate. This wine is so good with a cheese board. Great stuff.

Anthony Barton said that they picked too early that year and for the first part of its life it was a bit green but now in maturity it has shed this to reveal a classic claret.

  • 1966 Château Léoville Barton 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Anthony Barton said that it was from his Uncle's time and not one of his. In those days there was not a lot of money to spend on barrels or other items.

The wine was lovely for such an elder statesman. Slightly fading but still has all the elements of a classic bordeaux.

Closing

Many thanks to Fine & Rare for organising this event. A special thanks to Anthony for his dry wit and good humour. My personal preference for the WOTN was the 1990 Leoville Barton.
