  • 1975 Château Léoville Las Cases 80 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Restrained nose, closed?, prickly black currant leaves and a little lead. Also a little chlorine.
Weak palate, closed?, that is slightly watery. Light black currant fruit with an okay acidity but very dry ending with some rust in the mid-palate.
However, still a long acidic aftertaste. Overall it seems unstructured/disjointed and frankly a little disappointing.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Delicious and smooth black currant fruit on the nose. Very intense with some smokiness and petroleum adding to the complexity.
Almost creamy on the palate with black currant shrub and a complex array of flowers. Coffee and vanilla coming through with a hint of subtlety. The acidity is just perfectly integrated into the intensity of the flavors.
Simply stunning and just a huge benchmark style wine..
It is also super elegant and has an overall great balance and intensity.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Intense young black currant fruit with a hint of meat and coffee.
The acidity on the palate is just crazy. There is a hint of black currant fruit and a lot of iron in the flavors. Clean solid structure with a beautiful long aftertaste. It does however lack a little fruit to bring everything together.
When the bottle was revealed I was a little disappointed as I had expected more from this vintage!
Still a good LLC but to me nothing spectacular.

  • 1995 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very intense medicine cabinet nose with vitamin pills and sour cream. Some green peppercorns but also bell pepper.
There is a solid fruit acidity on the palate but it does lack a little fruit to fill out the structure of the wine. A little too short aftertaste.

  • 1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

A very special nose on this wine.. The fruit is black currant and dark plums but it does have some funny acidic hints, like vomit which is really odd. There is also some canned corn in the nose.
The palate is however simply great. A beautiful full bodied black currant fruit is coming through but it is almost vulgar. Personally I still find it quite sexy.
Simply a beautiful wine with a solid clean structure with a long impressive aftertaste. 96-97p

On the verge of still being drinkable but unfortunately it just got worse in the glass as it got more and more air!!

Cabbage and meaty nose with a little yogurt. Does seem a little closed.
Super intense black currant fruit on the palate with a massive structure. It seems very young but with a very long intense aftertaste.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Las Cases 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Deep and very intense black currant nose with tons of dark chocolate and coffee and just a hint of grass.
Concentrated and full-bodied palate but still in complete balance. A slight vanilla touch on the mid-palate. Crazy intense acidity and a massive tannin structure. Very complex spiciness.
Very impressive wine with a long life ahead of it. The aftertaste is simply amazing and intense but strangely enough the wine still seems easy to drink.. Very close to perfection! 99-100p.

Different than the other bottle in this tasting. This was only decanted a few hours while the other was decanted 12+ hours.

Very closed on the nose, only yielding a little black currant and liquorice.
Young black currant fruit on the palate with a long very acidic aftertaste. Very intense with a super structure.
    Huge potential...

Intense apricot on the palate with a lot of burnt sugar. Solid fruit depth and a good acidity. Some petroleum, coffee and vanilla.
A good fruit acidity but it does seem to have an excess of alcohol. There is also a lot of orange zest.
    Solid performance!
