Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1990 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Grande Cuvée 95 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is quite tight and closed and only shows a little red apples and some bread. After a little time it shows lemon soda.
However, there is intense red apples on the palate with a solid acidity with a slight bitterness in the aftertaste.
There is a fair amount of sweetness that is battling with the acidity but it ends up being in a solid balance.
The acidity is mostly in the style of grape fruit.
It still seems quite young with a capable acidity profile and a nice structure to it with a fairly long aftertaste.
The wine is not very complex but it is still very pleasurable and a great glass of Champagne!

  • 1990 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 97 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is quite intense with plenty of freshly baked bread but also hints of oxidation/sherry but not in a defective way. There is also a good amount of yeast and with time the nose changes to also include vanilla cookies.
Coffee is really dominating the palate initially but still with plenty of other complex notes. The sweetness is just perfect, not sweet and not completely dry.
The acidity is hiding a little bit but it is definitely there and there is a lot of juiciness from red apples.
It comes across as very fresh and still quite young in its profile. With time in the glass there is more sweetness coming through but the acidity also starts to pick up balancing the wine out very nicely.
A really "wide" tasting profile and also quite complex..
I simply adored this bottle and something I would love to taste again! 96-97p

  • 1990 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 98 Points

    France, Champagne

Just after single smell and taste of this wine it is very clear that it is in a league of its own!
The nose is very intense but still sophisticated. There is plenty of depth and showing fresh red apples and caramel. The nose also has a little oxidation/sherry notes but not in a bad way!
A completely massive and full-bodied palate fills the mouth with great pleasure.
Loads of red apples in the beginning with a very impressive structure.
In the beginning there is a lot of sweetness to it but it is balanced out nicely with a very clean acidity in the very long and impressive aftertaste.
There is a great fruit depth and a huge length!
This wine is simply stunning and it is really peaking at the moment.
It will keep for a very long time but it will not get much better than it is at the moment...

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1990 Mommessin Clos de Tart 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru

A lot of gasoline and diesel on the nose but also with plenty of fresh raspberries and just a hint of dirt and dark olives. Some cured meats also on the nose with a little smokiness but all-in-all super intense!
The palate seems fully mature with sweet raspberries with well-rounded tannin structure with a hint of black pepper and olives. Also a little bacon..
Prickly acidity and a little pine tree in the beginning but only a med short aftertaste.
A pretty edgy wine but still in a solid balance. 93-94p

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 1989 Château Palmer 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Young and fresh nose with dark berries. It is quite intense with a solid depth and power.
Flavors of blueberry and blackberry on the palate with solid vanilla influence and a little oak. There is a little meat and smoke but overall it is still showing as a quite young wine.
Medium long aftertaste that is spicy and intense.
However, the wine seems to have a lot of edges and it is difficult to determine if it will ever pull everything together in harmony. 93-94p

"Tasted during the main course"

  • 2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Nose: buttermilk, coffee and a prickly touch of rose hip. Quite complex.
Palate: Intense raspberry and a sharp acidity with just a hint of dirt.
Interesting wine but seemed a little off. Should be performing better and should really have been decanted longer. 94-95p

Fairly complex nose with raspberry and strawberry fruit with a touch of vanilla, buttermilk, olive and lavender.

  • 1998 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very earthy nose that is very closed with just a little lavender shining through.
The palate is compact and concentrated with very powerful harsh tannins.
Very spicy and a wild and crazy structure with an acidity that is through the roof.
Huge potential but not showing at its best this evening. 94-97p
