Introduction

The DAWGS held their monthly tasting at TexasZin's house in Garland, TX. Our theme for this month was Blind Pinot Noir. 15 members were in attendance this month including Mr & Mrs TexasZin, seanr7, Mr & Mrs BodegaTejas, txSCfan, Mr & Mrs bigred_seeker, BubbaP & BubbaKim, just a skosh, Mr & Mrs preferred, PURPLE and yours truly.

Flight 1 - Blind Pinot Noir Tasting (16 Notes)

16 wines were submitted for the blind tasting. Below is the order from 1 to 16.

  • 2002 DuMOL Pinot Noir Ryan 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Green Valley

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dusty rose color in the glass, slightly opaque. Nose of blackberries, pepper, potpourri and soft brown spices. Flavors of raspberries, black cherries, red currants (?) and pepper. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink or hold. My guess is this is the Dumol that preferred brought.

  • 2003 Siduri Pinot Noir Cargasacchi Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dusty rose color in the glass, slightly cloudy looking. Nose of cocoa, mineral, pepper and crushed dark berries. Flavors of red berries, red currants, spice and just a tiny hint of bitters on the finish. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short to mid-term. My guess is this is the Siduri that PURPLE brought.

  • 2004 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Carter Vineyard 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. This is an Oregon wine. Nose of mixed berries, dark fruits and just a touch of “citrus” that I sometimes get with Rosella’s Vineyard wine from California. Flavors of red berries, tart cherries and just a little spice. Medium acidity, light to medium tannins with light to medium body. Drink over the short term. My guess is this is one of the Ken Wright wines that BubbaP brought.

  • 2003 W.H. Smith Pinot Noir Maritime Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Rose colored in the glass, clear hue throughout. Definite New World on the nose. Aromas of cocoa with lots of ripe darks fruits. Flavors of black cherries, plums and berries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. My guess is this is the 2003 W.H. Maritime that seanr7 brought.

  • 2004 Anapamu Cellars Pinot Noir 87 Points

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Smells a little like a Rosella’s Vineyard wine. Some aromas of berries, pepper and minerals maybe along with the “citrus” smell? Flavors of red berries plus some other muddled soft fruits. Drink over the short term. Is this a Loring?

  • 2003 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard 87 Points

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Funky kind of a nose of Kirsch, currants and maybe forest floor. Flavors of currants, raisins and other “dried” fruits. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. What is this (I wrote on my note WTF?)? Definitely California. Don’t like it.

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light cherry colored in the glass, clear hue throughout. Citrusy nose with some mixed berries. Flavors red berries and cherries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. New world. Not sure what it is.

  • 2003 Saintsbury Pinot Noir Brown Ranch 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Rose colored I the glass, clear hue throughout. Slightly subdued nose. Kind of funky with some leather and mineral notes. Light flavors of red berries, cherries and mineral. Medium acidity, tannin and body. Drink over the short term. I’d almost say this is a Burgundy but I’m not sure.

  • 2003 Akarua Pinot Noir Bannockburn 87 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Rose to dark rose color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Minerally nose with some bacon fat, scorched earth and a little dark fruit. Flavors of red berries, minerals and bitters. Came across as a bit thin on the palate. Medium acidity, light to medium tannins. Light to medium bodied. Drink over the short term. My guess is this is the 2003 Akarua that txSCfan brought.

  • 2003 Mommessin Pinot Noir Bourgogne Oak Aged 87 Points

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Really funky nose that is dominated by the smell of graham crackers with a little underlying whetstone. Mineral streak on the palate with an earthy, somewhat bitter finish. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, light to medium body. Drink over the short term. My guess is Burgundy.

  • 2003 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Cargasacchi Vineyard 88 Points

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Meaty nose with a little funk and a touch of Kirsch. Coffee on the palate with a mix of dark fruits. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. California but I’m not sure what this is myself.

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Rose color in the glass, little dusty looking. Nose of potpourri, red fruits and a touch of bacon (could be from last wine). Flavors of red berries and red cherries. Medium acidity, silky tannins, medium body. Drink now. New world, not sure what it is though.

  • 2003 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard 85 Points

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Subdued nose with some aromas of burnt toast dominating and muddled red fruits. Flavors of tart red berries and red currants. Disjointed on the palate. Drink now. My guess is this is a Loring.

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Rose color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of minerals, licorice and black berries. Flavors of red berries, cherries and a little brown spice. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Hold. My guess is this is the Romanee that just a skosh brought.

Nose of black ehrries, a little bacon and a touch of that “citrusy” aroma. Flavors of black berries, raspberries and cherries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink now. My guess is this is one of the Ken Wright wines that BubbaP brought.

    Tasted October 21, 2006 at a blind tasting. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Light dusty rose color in the glass, dusty looking hue. Earthy nose with a touch of brett and underlying minerals. Straightforward flavors of red berries. Medium acidity, light tannins, light to medium body. Drink now. Definitely Burgundy.
