Maude's Liquor Bar, Chicago IL
Tasted Saturday, July 7, 2012 by KeithAkers with 601 views
Bob was in town visiting from DC. Naturally he happened to be in town during one of the nastiest heat spells in our fair city, but what can you do. Knowing that he enjoyed champagne, we focused the tasting around that and burgundy.
This was the main event for the 6 of us. There was a lot of wine with the 99 Raveneau being a magnum as well.
A nice little mix of Loire Reds and Rieslings. It was nice to try the keller, but it didn't really do much for me. This was another go at a Clos Rougeard and it just seems to scratch my itches.
I can't get enough of Maude's. Possibly one of my favorite places to go in the city for small group wine dinners. The wines showed great on the whole with the Meo and Krug being the real joys. It was great to see Bob again and have all that great wine with him.
2000 Dom Pérignon Champagne 91 Points
France, Champagne
nose: nice and aromatic nose of pears, minerals, white fruits, citrus tones and bits of florals. Solid depth, but not all that layered.
taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity but lacking a bit of a mid-palate. Nice and balanced with tones of pears, minerals, white fruits and some florals.
overall: A very nice dom, but not a memorable one. It's lacking some depth on both the nose and palate, but has a real nice balance to it right now and is accessible.

1998 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 90 Points
France, Champagne
nose: nutty and leesy nose with tones of pears, white fruits, toast and white peaches. Lacking depth and the leesy style doesn't balance with the higher toned citrus notes as I'd hope for.
taste: medium/full bodied with medium acidity. Finish is a bit clipped and slightly lacking on the mid. The leesy tones show through again along with roasted nuts, pears, paine grille and white fruits.
overall: I generally haven't been that enthralled with the 98 and found it similar here. It's a good wine, but there does seem to be a conflicting personality on the wine.

2010 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore 93 Points
France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
nose: loaded with crushed rocks and other mineral tones along with bits of fresh picked herbs, acacia flowers, and some flinty tones as well. Very good depth with some layering as well.
taste: medium/full bodied with very sharp medium/high acidity. The acidity is a bit overpowering currently, but beautiful tones of crushed rocks, minerals, fresh picked herbs, and flinty tones.
overall: This was a real experience. My first Vatan and it was a completely different sauvignon blanc experience than I've previously had.

1999 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
nose: very aromatic and balanced with mature tones of honey, melons, gun flint, white peaches and a nice dose of pears and minerals. Very good depth and it shows off it's maturity on the nose with some layering as well.
taste: There is a real nice roundness on the palate with a very polished lighter body. There was very good depth along with medium+ acidity and silky tones of gun flint, minerals, pears, honey and white peach tones.
overall: This had a lot of class to it. A real wonderful mature chablis that we had out of magnum.

1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 96 Points
France, Champagne
nose: insanely deep nose that is dense and filled with tones of marmalade, creamed peaches, butterscotch, honeydew melons, honey along with some green apple tones. Gorgeous nose that takes several goes just to get everything.
taste: Silky and layered medium/full feel. Extremely refined and classy with medium/high acidity that is more refreshing. Very deep with wonderful tones of marmalade, honey, creamed peaches, green apples, and honeydew melons.
overall: This was wonderful. Extremely deep and showing off what Krug is about. This was a real refined and classy champagne that did a great job of hitting the high notes.

2004 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Extra Brut Oenophile 92 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
nose: pristine and focused nose with tones of almonds, white fruits, green apples, mineral tones and floral tones. Nice depth as well and it is a bit on the tight side.
taste: well balanced medium/full feel with very noticeable medium/high acidity. Good depth behind the structure with pristine tones of white fruits, green apples, florals and a good amount of mineral tones.
overall: This is a young bubbly. Needs some time to fully sort itself out, but there is a real beauty underneath the youth.

1996 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
nose: utterly intoxicating and sumptuous nose with very deep and beautifully balanced tones. Well layered with flowing and gorgeous tones of red cherries, perfumes, loads of florals, vosne spices, and some incense. This is the kind of nose that just lets you get lost in it.
taste: extremely silky medium feel and shows the 96 structure with some good tannins and medium/high acidity. While the structure is there, it also possesses real harmony on the palate with elegant tones of dark red fruits, lots of purple and red florals, berries, vosne spices and some incense.
overall: this was sublime. Wholly beautiful with a somewhat feminine style to it. It was very Vosne with a bit of an understatement to it. The depth and class on both the nose and palate made the wine. This was one of those bottles that lets you know what burgundy is all about.

1999 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
I can't really rate this as it just seemed very shut down. The nose was extremely tight and unforgiving. Some tones of brown spices, dark red fruits, and earth tones poke through. It's a fight to get the tones though. Extremely structured on the palate as well with thrashing tannins and high acidity. This needs much more nap time

1995 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
nose: was a little tight at first, but then unraveled wonderfully into subtle and nuanced tones of perfumes, red fruits, roses, wild flowers, and roasted herbs. Extremely balanced with very nice depth as well.
taste: polished medium body with noticeable medium/high acidity. Balanced with very good depth and silky tones of red fruits, spices, wild flowers, licorice, roses and some bits of soy as well.
overall: This is still on the youthful side. It has become more perfumed and shows off it's vosne qualities well. A lovely wine that still has a good ways to go.

2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
nose: tight nose with good depth and tones of lemon zest, flinty tones, crushed rocks, minerals and citrus tones. Good depth, but just a bit unforgiving right now on the nose.
taste: light bodied with some screeching high acidity. The acidity is a bit palate destroying. Underneath the acidity lie tones of citrus, minerals, and flint tones. Very good depth, but the structure is overpowering right now.
overall: this is an extremely young wine. The raw materials are there, but the structure is just a bit unforgiving. This needs like 8 years before really showing itself.

2002 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
nose: round and deep with great tones of gun flint, minerals, crushed rocks, white fruits, and apples. Well layered and though showing some maturity, it also is still quite youthful as well.
taste: lighter bodied with medium/high acidity. Well balanced with really good depth and tones of gun flint, crushed rocks, white fruits and apples. There is a deftness to it as well with the polish that comes with some age.
overall: There is a good way to go for this wine. It's extremely good right now and it would be interesting to see where it can go with even more age.
